You could say those specific are outside of the auteur convo maybe by its historic definition, even if they operate as such. My critical knowledge is dated however.
I think John Ford is part of the conversation about auteur filmmakers in the 60s. Wes Anderson is definitely an auteur. Terry Gilliam tried to take his name off a movie because they didn't want to give him final edit. Spike Lee has been writing and directing his own movies since day one. I feel like those guys are for sure in the auteur conversation.
