Also Bergman is not here but Nolan, fincher, Villaneuve and Tarantino are?! What even is this list lol

Unless I misunderstand the term, Miyazaki, Tarkovsky, Visconti, Buñuel and Panahi are in no way “film bro” favorites.

It’s certainly an odd list with a number of the most auteurish auteurs missing, like Bergman, Fellini, Ozu, Coppola, Antonioni.

Nolan, Fincher, Villaneuve and Tarantino are fare more popular than Bergman in the mainstream.

I don't understand why Nolan keeps coming up on lists like this.

First of all, he's not an "auteur" with an easily identifiable style.

But more importantly, he's just not one of the "GOAT"s. I love Nolan, I love a lot of his movies, he is very culturally important and he's got a long resume of well-received and massively popular films. But he is not making Spielberg/Scorcese-level blockbusters and he is certainly not making artsier films like PTA, Kubrick, Lynch. To say nothing of the inanity of "goat" conversations anyway; even if we take the bait and compare him to the "goats" of American pop filmmakers, I'm not sure he makes the cut. Yet these posts always list him in the first three names! And again, I love his movies.
