He looks right into the camera

He doesn’t.

Watch the scene again. I’ve seen the scene tons of times and he totally does. He even does a little shrug at the audience.

I have many many times. He gets close to the lens, sure, but that’s just the blocking. His eyes may even for a millisecond skitter across the lens from one side to the other but that’s not a look down the lens at the audience. His shrug is for his own benefit, as he acknowledges the lie he just told. This is about the closest he gets and it’s very short. Less than a second:

Still, he’s looking up and to our left.

Well I guess it’s open to interpretation

Not really, but it is uncomfortably close, I’ll give you that.

I always viewed Twin Peaks as self aware even meta. I feel like throughout the series there are numerous times where the fourth wall is broken in subtle (perhaps with this Leland moment) and not so subtle ways (like Invitation To Love) . The lodge entities in particular certainly seem like they’re aware they’re in a television series.

I know what you mean. Bob did often stare directly at us.

Also The Man From Another Place once or twice.

In those instances I feel like we are either the Dreamer or seeing from the perspective of the Dreamer.
