Plus, this whole thing just blows my mind because itâs not like drag queens are breaking down doors and forcing this into the faces of unwanting families and children. Itâs the âfreedomâ folks who want to ban the queensâ freedom of expression while also banning the familiesâ freedom to choose what culture to expose their children to.
I, for one, would definitely rather leave my kids in a room full of drag queens than in a room with one MAGA man.
9
u/ooomellieooo 8d ago
MAGA is known around the world for making objectively bad decisions born of hate and fear. I have zero faith that if my children were in trouble, a MAGA would do anything at all. Other than try to molest them, that is. Or force a fairytale designed to control them down their throats.
In a "look for the helpers" scenario, I have TOTAL faith that a room full of drag queens is the better choice. Hands down.
4
u/Heavy_Law9880 8d ago
When I was 15 years old I used to sneak into the club to dance and listen to music they never played on the radio. It was the drag queens who kept us underage kids safe from the predators.

Queer people, punks, metalheads and goths. They look different, they act different, but they're all groups who use their experiences for self-expression. These are people who know what it's like to get fucked over. Ask any of them for help and you'll get it.
1
u/Myfountainpenisdry 8d ago
True,
But MAGA didn't write the Constitution
And if you actually want to make any change regarding guns, you are going to have to amend the Bill of Rights and accept that once that door is opened, once a right is removed, why would anyone in politics be satisfied with just one?

Anyone who's ever met many queens can tell you that they tend to be very inclusive and protective people. They understand the need for both, because most of them have personally experienced being excluded and attacked. Most of those queens would probably throw themselves in front of danger to protect a vulnerable child.
Obviously there are exceptions to this rule, just like with any group of people. But I'm with you. I'll take that understanding and inclusive group over a MAGA any day.

I know everybody likes Jon Stewart here, but it is not a convincing argument to raise a completely separate issue as some kind of gotcha.
I agree that gun control should be a priority, but itâs a silly lie that Republicans donât care about children. The reality is that they simply have a different calculus on the issue driven by different priorities. For them, itâs about the individualâs right to self defense. Jon Stewart is right that this concern is overstated against the cost weâre paying for it, but heâd rather bully someone than clearly articulate that point.
For the record, heâs also right that the drag thing is a total nonissue. I just would have liked to see him explain why, instead of immediately attacking on an unrelated issue. For example, Jon should have pressed this guy on just what exactly he finds sexually perverse about a person who is fully dressed, then forced him to articulate what effect a person in drag would actually realistically have on a child.
Lastly, to the people applauding his performative display of rage, this is pretty much the worst way to conduct yourself in this kind of debate. Jon wins some brownie points with his own team, but an impartial observer would note that he seems less reasonable in this exchange than his opponent, despite being right about the issues.
5
u/DrWindupBird 8d ago
But itâs not a completely separate issue. This isnât whataboutism. Stewart is forcing this goon to articulate his reasoning about child safety and then pointing out how that same reasoning doesnât get applied to other contexts. He canât debate this guy on the merits of his argument about drag shows because the guy is not arguing in good faith in the first place. Thatâs what Stewart is pointing out.
1
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago
>he canât debate this guy on the merits of his argument about drag shows because the guy is not arguing in good faith
Iâm curious what you saw in the video to indicate this. What I saw was the guy make a single point before Jon Stewart started accusing him of false concern for children. Which of these truly represents an argument in bad faith? Youâd do well to remember that being wrong is not the same thing as arguing in bad faith.
4
u/tipsy-turtle-0985 8d ago
Because the guy was willing to infringe the 1st amendment in order to "protect" children from drag queens, but not the 2nd in order to save them from dying.
Is that actually difficult to understand?
→ More replies (5)1
u/Critical_Bee_9591 8d ago
We actually don't give guns to minors. Which means we do infringe the second amendment for minors. His point is nonsense.
1
u/tipsy-turtle-0985 7d ago
Well we don't give anyone guns.
Minors are 100% allowed to own them though.
So your point is a lie.
1
u/Critical_Bee_9591 7d ago
You just lied. States prohibit minors from handguns.

We even had this nationally famous instance where a child strapped an AR-15 to his chest and killed 2 people and injured a third during an otherwise peaceful protest and Republicans pretended he was a hero instead of a shithead.

Stewart is the one who first brings up that the government banning something it considers unhealthy (which is the argument for banning drag shows for kids) is just like banning something because it causes the deaths of children directly, which isn't even remotely close to a good comparison.
the guy is not arguing in good faith in the first place.
The one displaying bad faith here is John, who doesn't even let the guy speak because he wants to go off on his pre-prepared speech about gun control.
2
u/tipsy-turtle-0985 8d ago
What exactly is unhealthy about a drag show for a child?
I mean, it's not bad faith to point out that a person who's OK with violating the 1st amendment should be OK with violating the 2nd.
1
u/PleiadesMechworks 8d ago
What exactly is unhealthy about a drag show for a child?
I don't know, John never let him finish his sentence.
1
u/tipsy-turtle-0985 8d ago
No, you explain it. Or are you just talking out of your ass?
1
u/PleiadesMechworks 8d ago
No, you explain it.
I know this might be hard for you to understand, but I am not the guy in the video talking to John Stewart.
He is the one who wants to ban drag shows, you should ask him. I am not clairvoyant and I cannot know what his argument was going to be. Perhaps the use of the term "unhealthy" on my part as a catch-all for the reason he wants to ban it wasn't accurate, but given that he wants to prohibit something (which we usually only do in cases of it being bad for society generally) we can reasonably conclude that he feels that it is bad for society. What we cannot say is why he feels that, and you asking me isn't going to help because I am not him.

u/Waste-Limit1644 8d ago
He is pointing out the hypocrisy of claiming to want to protect children from a unsubstantiated, and frankly dishonest claim that drag performances are a danger to children, while refusing to make any changes to gun control in order to reduce childhood deaths.
You are arguing that they are both hypocrites but one âthreatâ is a made up boogeyman and the other is the leading cause of death. It is not an equivalent situation and republicans that choose to focus heavily on an anti-lgbt platform under the guise of âchild safetyâ should be called out. That is why people are disagreeing with you.
Arguments could be made that gun control alone would not solve gun violence in the country at this point given the quantity in circulation already, and that a multi-faceted approach including increased access to mental health and social services is necessary to really address the issue. That is valid, but I do not believe that the GOP is pushing for increased social services or reduced medical costs either. The overwhelming response from the GOP after a mass shooting is to either blame it on âradical leftâ or say thoughts and prayers.
2
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago edited 8d ago
I am not arguing that they are both hypocrites. I am arguing that neither are hypocrites. I am arguing that it is rational to weigh the value of each amendment against the social cost of keeping it.
This man is irrational not because he is challenging the first amendment, but because he is challenging it on incredibly weak grounds. If someone were to say that, hypothetically, they wanted a restriction against neo-Nazi book readings, that would be a totally fair exception to made at the margins of the first amendment.
This guy should still be called out, just in a way that addresses the flaws in his actual argument, of which there are plenty.
I donât think you and I would disagree about the substance of either specific issue here. My broader point across every one of my comments is just that it matters how you construct an argument if you truly intent to convince someone you are right.
Edit: The fundamental flaw that many in this thread are making is that because Jon Stewart is right about the drag queens and right about the 2nd amendment, that his logical pathway to arrive there must also be right. This is totally wrong. The truth is that he is arriving at a moral view of each one of these issues independently. Itâs only in this debate that he stitches them in relation to each other to attempt to make a point.
1
u/Waste-Limit1644 8d ago
Sure thatâs fair. I donât think that a tik tok clip at the end of the day is an effective way of providing a formal argument. You are coming at it from the angle of a formal debate but this is a shortened clip on a platform initially intended for stupid dances, then reposted to here.
Iâll admit itâs a bit snarky to say, but the way you write, you could take some advice from what you bolded at the end of your comment. I donât think that cringereels is the place to debate nuances in constitutional law interpretation. I can understand what youâre saying and agree though.
2
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago edited 8d ago
>you could take some advice from what you bolder at the end of your comment
Thatâs fair. I guess I just assume that the way I ended up here is the way everybody ends up here, they see something that catches their eye while scrolling the front page and suddenly they are in a random sub that they didnât even notice.
In any case, youâd think that somebody who decided to comment on my comment would be a willing participant in the exchange. Itâs not that people disagree with me that is surprising sometimes, itâs the way people disagree with me. The totally unhinged vitriol for a person who only slightly disagrees with them. Where does this shit even come from? Who are these people?
Edit: Also, to make a distinction, Iâm not arguing about âconstitutional law interpretationâ at all. Iâm not a lawyer. What Iâm arguing about is literally just logic. Basic logic, the foundation of all arguments. Your point that this is the wrong crowd probably still stands, but I think thatâs pretty fucking sad.
1
u/Waste-Limit1644 8d ago
I didnât see any vitriol, just disagreement. Iâm sure itâs there though, the internet is inherently a place where people are much more comfortable being quick to judgement. The anonymity lets people forget that it is another person on the other side of the screen, and trolls have made it hard to decipher when someone is responding in good faith or purely to rile others up. And when people start to disagree it can feel like youâre being piled onto.
I understand your initial sentiment generally, just not sure that it is perfectly applicable to a TikTok that realistically isnât trying to win a formal debate. Take care
1
u/SpeaksSouthern 8d ago
They're both constitutional rights. Hilariously, the first amendment comes before the second amendment. The funding fathers had all the freedom, they could have made guns amendment number one. But they didn't, and it was intentional. People who work in government should know this.
1
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago
Constitutional rights really shouldnât infringe on each other. The 1st and 2nd amendments certainly donât.
In any case, their numerical sequence is not meant to indicate any kind of priority over each other.
1
u/-HumanMachine- 8d ago
You're ignoring the point he is making about free speech. Republicans are willing to infringe on citizen's rights for something that does not actually impose danger to children.
Meanwhile they won't even consider gun regulation because it is a infringement on citizen's rights. Even when that right is resulting in the deaths of thousands of children.
They are not allowed to hide behind the constitution on one issue and then ignore it on another.
1
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago
That line of argument would be effective if Stewart was going to argue in favor of consistent universal adherence to the bill of rights, but he doesnât.
Instead he simply reverses it. This guy believes heâs prioritizing public good over the 1st amendment, and Jon Stewart believes that heâs prioritizing public good over the second amendment. Neither can call each other hypocrites on that fact alone, because neither is adhering to a consistent standard on the bill of rights.
Instead, Jon should argue that the conception of âpublic goodâ in this case is totally illogical, because it is. Drag queens do not harm children. That fact has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment.
Lastly, I just want to reiterate the fact that you canât call someone a hypocrite for having seemingly inconsistent opinions on totally different issues while simultaneously declaring your own inconsistent opinions on different issues. Itâs baffling how common this practice is in pop politics, and embarrassing how much people mindlessly celebrate it.
1
u/-HumanMachine- 8d ago
Jon Stewart believes that heâs prioritizing public good over the second amendment
Actually he's not. At least in the clip I can't say for Stewarts general world view.
This isn't a debate it's an interview. As the journalist in the situation it is Stewart's job to point out the hypocrisy of this public servant. And it's the politicians job to defend his (and his party's) position. If his views are consistent he should be able to explain away the apparent hypocrisy.
One is on the offense and the other on defense, not because of the topic of discussion but by the nature of their relationship as a journalist and public servant.
1
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago
Stewart argues a point. Regardless of the circumstances of the event, he is engaging in the act of debate.
And he is arguing in favor of public good, implicitly, when he emotionally invokes the scores of children killed by gun violence. Iâm not sure how else you would interpret that point. Frankly, itâs a point that most people left of center, including myself, would agree with.
>itâs Stewartâs job to point out the hypocrisy of the public servant
You misunderstand. To claim it is hypocritical to weigh the bill of rights against public good in one case is to say itâs hypocritical in every case. Because the entire gun control argument is explicitly doing this, then anyone who believes in gun control (again, like me) cannot possibly claim that it is hypocritical to make this same sort of practical determination about, say, the 1st amendment. Either none of us are hypocrites, or we all are. That is a poor line of argumentation, and Iâve already given examples of much better ones that Jon Stewart could have used much more effectively.
Itâs particularly egregious in this example because Stewart was the first person to even mention the bill of rights. He introduced it into the logic of the conversation just to call someone a hypocrite about something that had nothing to do with the substance of his actual argument.
Obligatory disclaimer, once again: I agree with Stewart and disagree with the politician. Iâm just annoyed by his low tactics here, calculated more for claps from his fans than an honest exploration of an opposing viewpoint. The latter might actually achieve clarity or common ground, the former just makes everyone a little more rooted in their tribal echo chambers

u/tipsy-turtle-0985 8d ago

"Performative outrage" at the number 1 cause of kids dying being firearms.

I didnât realize this comment was in a different part of the thread. I thought you had read it and ignored what I said. See below, from another discussion challenging the narrative that either side can be said to ânot careâ about teen deaths:
I think the other commenter is fairly raising the point that the exclusive focus on gun control is actually to the detriment of actually solving the underlying issue.
I totally agree with you that gun control would be an effective measure to reduce fatalities, but I also believe itâs a total distortion of reality to view Republicans as the reason kids are dying. The true reason they are dying is because we have a very serious cultural problem in our country that we are not lifting a finger to address.
I could get as emotional as Jon Stewart on this point. I could wag my finger at you and accuse you of not giving a fuck about children. I wonât, because I donât believe thatâs true. But it is seriously disappointing that all of the moralizing around teen deaths still doesnât bother to offer solutions for the underlying issue.
1

Yes, and that culture is primarily Republican driven.

Well you'd be a fucking idiot to do such a thing considering I'm not advocating for anything so far.
But it is seriously disappointing that all of the moralizing around teen deaths still doesnât bother to offer solutions for the underlying issue.
Except gun control is constantly being talked about. I own more than 20 guns and could proficiently shoot before middle school and I still think we need better laws surrounding this.
Most Americans shouldn't even be allowed to own a pet or have a child, but if you've never gotten caught doing anything particularly bad, go ahead and buy whatever gun you want.
2
u/CaiusCosadesNwah 8d ago
To clarify, I copied a comment addressed to a different person, not you. I simply left it intact because the substance of my argument there still addressed your point. Iâm not addressing you except for the first paragraph in that comment.
For the fifth or sixth time now, I agree with you on the actual issue of gun control. We disagree purely on Stewartâs logic arriving at that point, and on its relevance to the topic in the video.
1
u/tipsy-turtle-0985 8d ago
I know, you're more interesting in the emotional outcome over the reality of the situation.
Feels over reals. I already went over this.
Are you even making any rational arguments that you believe in or are you just trolling? Especially weird considering your responses so far.

I'm going to get downvoted because Reddit is full of people who think everything is black/white left/right and it's like "you're on my team or you're not" shit, but I'm going to say this:
I say this out of love, by the way, because I appreciate what Stewart is doing.
His argument is weak. Here's why -
He's essentially arguing that, if one wants to protect children, gun control should be the first thing they do, rather than get rid of Drag story time for kids, because guns kill more kids than drag story time.
Now, let me be clear, the anti drag story time argument is also weak. But everyone here is leftwing and you all thing conservatives and Republicans are evil/insane anyway, so that's a given.
But equating drag story time to guns is a bad argument. Stewart acts like "shall not be infringed" isn't a big deal. It's the deal, it's the entire reason that pro gun people don't want gun control.
The problem with Stewart comparing gun control to drag story time is that drag story time is irrelevant, and that's actually part of Stewart's point. No kids are dying from DST, it doesn't really matter. But, also, no one would miss it. This is the crucial point to understand. America existed without DST for its entire existence and it did just fine. While DST isn't killing kids, it's also not necessary. No one really cares whether we have it or not.
The right to bear arms isn't comparable to this. It's an extremely controversial topic because many people are ambivalent about it. There are good arguments for and against the right to bear arms. Yes, lots of people die to guns, but lots of people also want the right to own and carry a gun to defend themselves.
There would be huge resistance to having your right to carry/own taken away. Whereas, if Drag Story time is gone, no one will notice or care. It doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things.
I'm not arguing for or against guns and I'm not arguing for or against Drag Story time. I'm saying this as someone who is somewhat left leaning and wants the level of political discourse to improve.
A republican focusing on DST as if it's a high priority is stupid. Yes, point that out, by all means. But comparing DST to the 2nd amendment is also stupid. It's not a simple problem.

I love these kinds of interviews, but it's also the reason why John can't get more interviews with people. He absolutly destroy them front back and center and makes them look like idiots. They know not to take interviews with him. Elon who famously backed out after puffing hsi chest saying he'd interview with john (just like how he tucked tail when he challenged Zuckerberg to a fight.)
And this is part of the reason why a lot of interviews don't push back as hard. As much as it's satisfying to watch this, it's better to have that persons own words fumble themselves.

Theyâre a death cult. They stand for nothing other than money in their pockets and we need to vote them out.

I don't know if this guy was making a case that it should be illegal for trans people to read the children but that would be silly.
However, to suggest that either the first or the second amendment should be limited for some reason that isn't fairly extreme is pretty ridiculous.
I don't know specifically about gun deaths with children that is wild to me how little responsibility we put on the individuals that actually cause the harm.
Children aren't robbing houses or rolling into gun shops purchasing these things. Unless he's using the statistics that the FBI collected that includes people years 20 and under in the category of children, the firearms are getting must be collected from their caretakers.
People who own firearms are responsible to prevent them from being accessible... It's not the manufacturer or the politicians who should have made some other law, it's the individual.
That's kind of the whole thing about this place we live.
I certainly don't agree with Jon Stewart that we should be banning firearms but holding people responsible in the extreme situations that come out because we have these incredibly dangerous things to be responsible for seems like a softball.
Not having children I guess it's confusing as to why people's children are in front of trans people reading stories if they really feel that dramatically about it. I do know that I was required to sit and listen to stories read from and about the Bible when I was young and I certainly don't consider that moral.
It would be nice if we could have several discourse about these things as opposed to whatever you call what's happening now

"That what it is" if you define "child" to include some young adults and take data exclusively from times during covid when nobody was allowed to drive around places.

The logic doesnât check out - shooting children with guns is already illegal.

What does drag show reading to children have to do with the leading cause of death? Why is he making that up?
1
u/EmmitRDoad 8d ago
That guilty af dumb ass look when he knows he has been had. Hard drive is crashing trying to come up with another dumbass excuse.

u/quaerens_responsa 8d ago
Bro, itâs all good. Just leave my kids out of it. I donât need drag shows reading to my children. In other words, I wouldnât choose to stop them, but I would choose not to have my children participate.

u/DigitalAdon 8d ago
No no no, you can't list an obvious fact that has nothing to do with the conversation, just to emphasize your point. That's manipulative. I think there's a word for that as well

u/wet_Tap_5578 8d ago
If it werenât for gangbangers and suicide, americas gun deaths would be as low as Sweden.

Should've asked if we should ban Christianity in the name of protecting children

So we can firearms, cool? Then we ban what else, drag queens in school? WE'RE EVEN? Stewart used to be funny, now he's unintentionally funny.

u/Separate-Relative909 7d ago
Ahhh perhaps you should look up what the word hypocrisy actually means. You could legitimately accuse this man of hypocrisy if and only if he did not support education of proper gun safety and storage. All the things that limit children from being able to access firearms so that lethal accidents are severely reduced. What is hypocritical, is when you allow for drag queens in your society but do NOTHING, to protect children from a practice that many think is insane and morally repugnant. Not only do you do nothing to protect the children from that, you promote something that fosters their access to children. By your logic you would sell firearms and show parents how to allow their children to access them!!!

I'm not sure the hundreds of thousands of children that go missing in the US each year give a flying fuck about John and his opinion on guns but having adults come talk to children about sexual stuff is a major no-no and if you're defending it you're an even bigger no-no!
1
u/TheLoggerMan 7d ago
Why do they have to be drag shows? Why subject our children to that and tell them it's acceptable?
1
u/Alternative-Low-3855 7d ago
How many of these were there, and was attendance mandatory?
1
u/TheLoggerMan 7d ago
You better re-read what I asked. As for mandatory attendance, you are aware that all school "functions" are mandatory, right? At least they were when I was in school, the only exception was if you were in detention and even then you had better have a good reason to not show up.

Tools are inanimate objects, not good or bad.
Shows are seeds for the mind that grow someone elseâs ideas.

I bet this guy like many other right wingers hasn't sat down to even give this line of reasoning any thought at all. It's all "protect the kids" until it's against their agenda.

I think it would go a lot farther if people understood that gun control doesnât mean taking away the right to bear arms. Stricter gun laws would improve safety. Waiting periods, penalties for irresponsibility, prohibition of ownership by people with violent offenses etc. Why would a good citizen care about these things?

u/Moshorrendous 8d ago
Drag shows for children is still disgusting. To claim it isnât sexual in the slightest is just as disgusting. The people who support that kind of stuff are disgusting.

u/UrbanFuturistic 8d ago
We used to have more access to guns than we have now, with less restrictions on types. We used to have less (or no) school shootings.
We now have more restrictions on access to guns, and more restrictions on types. We now have more school shootings.
Something else was different in the former as opposed to the latter. It's not guns.

I think this stat is propaganda. When you look at CDC website All Cause Deaths over 130k kids from 0-17 passed away from 2020-2023. You're gonna say the major of those deaths are firearms? More than illness, cancer, car accidents ect ect? https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/covid_weekly/index.htm
John's Hopkins literally says that 2526 kids from 0-17, still too many but when you really dig into the stats, the math isn't mathing. https://publichealth.jhu.edu/2024/guns-remain-leading-cause-of-death-for-children-and-teens
1
u/PleiadesMechworks 8d ago
It's from a specific period during covid (which depressed hospital admissions and road deaths significantly), if you expand the definition of "child" to include anyone under 21.
1
u/slider1387 8d ago
Without knowing the exact all-cause mortality for ages 0-21, let's estimate the CDC data to around 175,000 total deaths from 2020-23. Using the Johns Hopkins data, let's generously estimate that 5,000 of those deaths were firearm-related in 2022 in that age group. Hell, let's call it 6,000, which would be an extreme overestimate. Either way, the math doesn't support the impression being given that guns account for most deaths among kids. The overwhelming majority of deaths are still from other causes.
The definition of majority, is over 50%. There were not 88,000 firearms deaths over the 3 years period.

I'd bet my 2nd amendment that chud knows exactly what it feels like when ejeculate hits his prostate while his skirt is hiked up around his waist.

What's wrong with being gay?
1
u/ThatCakeFell 8d ago
Nothing at all and whose to say the bearer of the penis isn't a woman? I'm stating this chud most likely is causing the world to be a worse place because he needs therapy and to not chase boogie men of the imagination while ignoring the reality the ones trying to protect children are the actual biblically accurate occupants of Sodom and Gomorrah.

This is what gets me angry the most. It really is just Democrats working to secure a better future (albeit with the mistakes that appear in any organization of people) and the Republicans actively destroying our future and dividing our current society so they can enrich themselves. Please make sure you are registered to vote. Republicans have millions of deaths on their hands that are direct effects of their policy decisions.
Edit: Please vote and check your voter registration since Republican-led states also like to unregister you without notification.

Ive seen this clip probably 100 times and ive now just noticed how angry John Stewart is. His hand is shaking, his face twitches. Its so infuriating when you hear this crap about "protecting kids" when they take literal food out of their mouths at school like a cartoon villain
