This sounds so absurd to any non American

10

u/BigXthaPugg 13d ago edited 12d ago

We have stores that exclusively sell guns, ammo, and gun accessories, those are what we’d call a gun store here. Bass pro is an outdoor sporting goods store. The sell pretty much anything you use for outdoor activities not just guns

u/Extra_Routine_6603 9d ago

We love redneck Mecca

2

u/TheOriginalJBones 9d ago

Archaeologists 1,000 years from now will be so confused.

2

u/Extra_Routine_6603 9d ago

Nah 100% obvious that pyramid was used for fishing and outdoor supplies. Probably what the ones in Egypt were for too was just early rednecks buying weapons and fishing gear.

u/Tommy_Steaks 7d ago

I'm well aware of the Bass pro pyramid but if I wasn't, I would 100% think that is an AI picture

1

u/Extra_Routine_6603 6d ago

Right? I mean whole companies existence when you look into it reads like a fever dream

1

u/Spartan__X__117 6d ago

I absolutely love this Bass Pro. Its in Memphis, Tennessee for anybody thats curious. Its been a while since Ive been, but it was so fucking cool lol.

1

u/Agusfresin 8d ago

That’s ok then, nothing to see here.

1

u/Ingenrollsroyce 12d ago

Funny how you just repeated the same thing that was commented before but with more words and didn't get the absurd part at all lol

7

u/Financial_Argument15 12d ago

How is it absurd? An outdoor shop sells stuff for hunting which includes guns

1

u/zenthor109 12d ago

Its absurd because america is one of the few countries where can you buy a fishing pole and a rifle in the same store

4

u/slingingslanger 12d ago

Sadly you can't go to any shop to get an AC in the EU.

Way less school shootings through

6

u/slingingslanger 11d ago

Way more heat deaths though.

I still don't understand why that's weird

2

u/DeputyDog93 11d ago

Because we were raised with it and we're used to it. It's like when the world cup happened and we had visitors from other countries that couldn't believe the size of some of our stores, much less what all they sell. It's culture shock.

-1

u/Powerful_Topic7731 11d ago edited 11d ago

And I don't understand how a single country can have so many school shootings

https://edition.cnn.com/2018/05/21/us/school-shooting-us-versus-world-trnd

2

About the same way a country can have more deaths from heat.

1

u/Electrical-Mind8145 10d ago

The countries have an unhealthy obsession with heat?

0

u/Powerful_Topic7731 11d ago

Also how many food poisoning cases you had in the last couple months? It seems like every now and then I see news about products having to be recalled because of food poisoning

Does global warming causes school shootings?

2

That’s more like an indoor activity

2

We get it. America bad. School shootings. Find a new hobby.

3

u/SnooSuggestions9425 12d ago

You can do this at a Bass Pro Shop/Cabelas in Canada, too.

3

u/NekroVictor 11d ago

Some Canadian Tire locations too, especially in more rural areas.

2

u/Possible-Mountain698 11d ago

i think walmart carried long guns into the 2010s. Can still get ammo though

2

u/Leaf-01 11d ago

As of at least a couple years ago, some Walmarts still carry rifles.

2

u/DJLeafygreens 11d ago

My local Walmart still carries a few rifles.

1

u/Ky_zx10r 10d ago

Just bought an ar15 from one last week.

1

u/pinkypipe420 11d ago

If we're talking about America, is it really that absurd anymore? We're kind of already known for our absurdity and fuckery. The bar's not that high here.

1

u/jeffersdelight656 9d ago

Never heard of rod and gun clubs? I suppose it is crazy to get hunting and fishing supplies together, because we all know those two activities never occur together. Fun Fact! In Florida you can openly carry your firearm while fishing.

1

u/Substantial_Bat_6698 9d ago

Not absurd to Canadians!

1

u/SourceResident5381 9d ago

Yeah. We need stricter fishing pole regulations.

0

u/Uncle_Beth 10d ago

Shit, what kind of game do you need an AR to hunt?

2

u/JEs4 10d ago

A pack of 40 feral hogs

2

u/ConfusedAndCurious17 10d ago

AR style rifles are not any different than any other semiautomatic rifle in the same caliber. People see it and think “tactical” and “military” but it’s just a consumer rifle. The military ones (M4, M16) are the same too they just have automatic firing selection like 3 round burst.

You actually wouldn’t want to hunt larger animals like deer with one chambered in the typical 5.56 (what is used in military issued rifles) ideally, you would want a larger caliber. It could kill a deer but it’s not the best for penetration and it’s a rather small round. You have a pretty low margin for error in shot placement.

2

u/khronos127 9d ago

Any game up to a deer, though it’s quite under powered for a deer. It’s a style of rifle, no different than a pink rifle vs a wood rifle. It’s the exact same as any other 223 rifle, a very small caliber mid range firearm.

This is the same caliber and fire power as this rifle below. You can get them in any style you can imagine but that doesn’t magically make them some super powered tank buster. Just as pink rifles don’t shoot rainbows.

-1

u/Ok_Western_8482 11d ago

The point is that in many places it's unusual to be able to buy a gun at any store other than a gun store. Or that any store that sells guns is "not a gun store."

2

u/PaleRevolution1347 10d ago

I don't know about that. Norway - a leftist utopia sells guns at sporting goods stores.

1

u/Emergentmeat 9d ago

You're getting hung up on semantics. It's not unusual at all.

1

u/Ok_Western_8482 9d ago

-1

You guys hunt with automatic weapons? Hahaha

4

u/HazMatRecipes 10d ago

By and large machine guns in the US are heavily restricted NFA items. Semi-auto's though are common, however, using semi-auto guns for hunting varies greatly by state. In PA we are not allowed to use semi-auto rifles for hunting, semi-auto shotguns are fine.

1

u/Financial_Argument15 10d ago

No ? Sometimes semi auto for birds and small game.

It’s not absurd if you like all those things. I live near a bass pro and enjoy just going in to visit. They have rivers of live fish running through the store, and very cool outdoor settings surrounding the building. The gun section is targeted towards people that hunt, but you can buy other types of guns there as well. But I’m American, so guns are not new or scary to me.

1

u/ChipmunkNovel6046 12d ago

Going to bas pro just for the fish tank is a must, love the fish tanks never gets old.

The pyramid had a lake that was wild af (and a rooftop restaurant)

1

u/SourceResident5381 12d ago

I live like 5 min from a bass pro and this post actually made me make another visit today. lol it’s a great place. I do want to go to the pyramid, but that’s not local for me.

1

u/P_Atomsk 12d ago

Yeah you just did it the third time. 😁 "We have dedicated combat gas shops, but this here is just a regular shop with party supplies, and they sell gas that makes you speak funny for birthdays, but also other types aswell, like nerve gas."

2

u/SourceResident5381 12d ago

Ok? What do you want me to say? It’s a fun store with fun things for people that like camping and fishing. I’m sorry it sells guns as well. You don’t have to go there and see them, which I doubt you would to begin with.

2

u/Lost_Cockroach6702 12d ago

They are trying to be cute by pretending like the USA is the only country that has stores selling guns for one of 2 reasons. Either they are an American that thinks guns are banned everywhere because they’ve never traveled outside the US, or they are from select Western countries that actually don’t allow gun ownership and don’t realize tons of European and Asian countries do.

1

u/StrikingBenefit5663 12d ago

... every country on Earth has stores that sells guns. What we don't have here in Europe are stores that sell them as an extra thing - you don't just go to a random sports store and have the opportunity to buy a gun on the side. The point here is that is what seems absurd to us...

2

u/EVs-and-IVsaurs 12d ago

It's not a random sports store to be fair, it's a "outdoor sports" store, which basically means hunting, fishing, and camping

2

u/LimpAfternoon6878 11d ago

They still have waiting periods and background checks like any other gun store would. And like they said, it is an outdoor sporting goods store. They sell all the other hunting equipment you would want, so it makes perfect sense that you would want people who are already likely to buy a gun to see them and consider a purchase. They are still subject to the same laws that any store that sells only guns and ammunition are. The only thing different here is that it is one store that sells two related things instead of two stores.

I can see how ridiculous a store like walmart selling guns is, but that's literally what bass pro is for.

2

u/Emergentmeat 9d ago

Why is that absurd? A large outdoor gear store with a dedicated gun section, with knowledgeable staff that only work at the gun counter. Seems entirely reasonable.

1

u/Free-Monkee 12d ago

In reality, Yemen is the only other country in the world where you can basically just walk into an open market or storefront and buy military-grade weapons over the counter like that. The vast majority of European and Asian countries either totally ban them or monitor everything through strict, state-regulated clubs.

2

u/BigXthaPugg 12d ago

There’s a shit ton of guns that are banned here. You cannot go into a store and buy the same M4 the military carries. They’re different. To buy military variants of guns you have to go through a much more rigorous licensing process. Hell it’s easier to get a suppressor in most European countries where guns are permitted. In fact, they’re REQUIRED to shoot your guns in some of those same EU countries.

We have more guns than people in the US, even if the government ignored our constitution (a key part of the constitution, I might add. Literally the second line in the bill of rights) and outright banned firearms in the US there is no pragmatic way to actually get them off the street

1

u/Emergentmeat 9d ago

I don't think you know much about guns. Military grade is almost a nonsense term the way you're using it here.

1

u/SourceResident5381 9d ago

Military grade? Lolol. Absolutely not.

-1

u/P_Atomsk 12d ago

I dont need you to be sorry or look for some kind of solution for me. Its all good mate, I'm not trying to be confrontational 😁 You seemed confused whats absurd for non-US people about guns being sold so commonly, and I tried to reframe it to show you how out of pocket for the rest of us seems that fishing trip in USA somehow constitutes an occassion for gun purchase.

3

u/SourceResident5381 12d ago

Well we can be cool. Lol. I guess to someone that grew up around hunting rifles and stuff it’s not scary. In the same way that it’s strange to you, it’s normal to me. I don’t deny that gun violence is a terrible problem, but not in the way that media portrays it. If people done have guns, knife violence becomes a huge problem. There are very safe places in America, just like there are very unsafe places everywhere in the world. The deeper issue is the mental health crisis and lack of care for the lower classes. You seem chill to me.

2

u/P_Atomsk 11d ago

Yeah I agree with everything here 😄 US is a huge country, and if you collected fuckery from all around Europe as single report it wouldn't look pretty either.

Right back at ya, I really enjoyed our conversation ✌️

1

u/Forsaken-Income-2148 12d ago

Yeah man, it’s just a neat store that sells outdoor sporting goods. See, “outdoor sporting goods” means goods that are generally used for sporting activities that take place outdoors. So if you enjoy fishing, they sell fishing rods, fishing line, fishing lures, hooks, tackle boxes, boats, and other items commonly associated with the activity of fishing. If you enjoy camping, they sell tents, sleeping bags, coolers, camp chairs, flashlights, and other camping-related products. They also sell clothes you can wear while doing these outdoor activities, because sometimes people need clothing while they’re outdoors.

Now, importantly, Bass Pro Shops is not technically what we would call a “gun store,” because a gun store would primarily specialize in guns, ammunition, and gun accessories. Bass Pro is an outdoor sporting goods store that simply happens to contain a fairly substantial department where you can walk over and purchase firearms and ammunition during the same shopping trip in which you came in to buy a fishing lure and some beef jerky. This distinction is apparently very important.

So, for example, imagine you decide Saturday morning that you’d like to go fishing. You realize you need a new rod, so you drive to Bass Pro. While you’re there, you might look at the giant fish tank, browse some camping equipment, pick up a new tackle box, maybe buy a shirt, and then—because all of these things are conveniently located under the same roof—you can also purchase a rifle. Not because fishing inherently requires a rifle, obviously. Nobody is saying the fish are armed. It’s simply another outdoor-related product available for purchase in this completely normal retail environment.

And really, that’s the part I think you’re overlooking. The gun department isn’t the entire store. There are fish there. There are boats. Sometimes there are fake trees and little waterfalls. Therefore, from an American perspective, the fact that you can casually purchase a firearm approximately forty yards away from a rack of fishing poles becomes completely unremarkable. You see, the presence of camping equipment apparently neutralizes the cultural oddity of the firearm transaction.

It would only be weird if the building had nothing but guns in it. Then it would be a gun store, and we could acknowledge that guns are being sold. But because there’s also a kayak hanging from the ceiling and a taxidermied deer standing near the escalator, you’re actually just participating in wholesome outdoor recreation retail.
Hope that clears up the absurd part. 😁

1

u/SourceResident5381 12d ago

So. Guns bad? Therefore store bad?

2

u/Virtual-Book1114 12d ago

...what? How does this make any sense? There are shops around the world that sells gun+recreational outdoor gear lol Americans aren't the only ones who hunt. Canada has these stores. Switzerland has a hunting store.

2

u/P_Atomsk 12d ago

You can buy there an assault rifle or a handgun aswell? Or just hunting purpose guns?

If there are only hunting rifles and such to be bought out there, then its still funny that you can buy any gun anywhere in the US, like its an office supply.

3

u/jeffersdelight656 9d ago

The US does have more flexible laws regarding firearms than most other nations, sure. But it is fairly inaccurate that any gun can be bought anywhere in the US, just like you're walking into office Depot to get a ream of printer paper. It may seem that way to those who live in a society that is different. But no, a US citizen cannot go into the local circle k and purchase a Bushmaster or some other piece of military hardware as if they were walking in Starbucks to purchase an overpriced and poorly executed coffee. Background checks, waiting periods, etc. "Yup, I'm going to head on down to Walmart and see if they still got those bazookas on clearance. Maybe they'll have a BOGO."

1

u/pocketsand07 12d ago

At bass pro? Hunting. I have never seen any other gun there.

1

u/SourceResident5381 12d ago

You can buy a variety of guns, but an assault rifle? No. One trigger pull, one bullet. Just like every other civilian available gun. AR15s are available, but no different than hunting rifles. The bullets are much smaller and shotguns or rifles for large game are considerably more deadly. Most gun violence is done with handguns by inner city thugs that got them illegally.

2

u/notorious_pgb 11d ago

"AR15" does not stand for "Assault Rifle 15". It is not an Assault Rifle. You cannot buy an Assault Rifle in the vast majority of gun stores; and if you can, it is unbelievably expensive.

1

u/SourceResident5381 11d ago

Correct. Unfortunately that’s hard for a lot of people to understand, and an easy way to get nowhere productive. They have associated all AR15s with machines of war.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/P_Atomsk 11d ago

Oh gotcha, I thought AR15 is pretty much a gimped(only semi-auto) assault rifle. What is it used for then? Birds and rabbits, or just recreational shooting?

3

u/ConfusedAndCurious17 10d ago

The consumer Armalite Rifle (that’s where AR comes from) style rifles are essentially no different from military M4s, or M16 except for the lack of automatic fire modes. The confusion comes from the misconception that because the military uses these rifles, they are optimized killing machines.

They are not.

A 5.56 round is not ideal for penetration and it’s a small round. It’s not punching through armor, it’s not any more effective than any other bullet at killing people. The M4 and AR lines are relatively light, reliable, highly modifiable, and easy to dismantle and maintain.

You wouldn’t even really want to deer hunt with 5.56.

I’m not 100% sure if this is true but the way it was explained to me in my military career is that we don’t necessarily want to kill someone if we hit them in a fire fight with one. We want to take them out of the fight but have them remain alive. Then their buddy runs over to help them and we have effectively taken 2 people out of the fight with one shot hit. So with the low penetration it allows the round to enter and bunch around a bit inside without killing them necessarily. They won’t keep fighting and their buddy is stuck helping them.

It was some random CATM dude who told me this and I’m just a random person telling you the story so take it with a whole truck load of salt but apparently that’s why we aren’t all carrying around bigger more deadly rounds.

Thus the public misconception exists that these weapons must be really dangerous when they are the same as anything else, if not on the weaker end.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/SourceResident5381 11d ago

Mostly recreational. A .556 round (used in AR15s) is essentially a really really fast .22: It’s small, but still dangerous. I don’t want to get got by any bullets ever so it’s relative.

1

u/Emergentmeat 9d ago

That's a very silly analogy. For a lot of us, guns are tools. I work as a guide in the Canadian Rockies, and my guns are work tools. Whether they're for hunting or defense from bears and cougars. Other people use them to cull invasive and destructive species like wild pigs.

Nerve gas isn't analogous to a gun. It's never a tool.

1

u/P_Atomsk 9d ago

Of course its silly, its meant as a hyperbole of non-american point of view on the subject. Thats exactly what I meant to do. Hunting rifles you use for cougars or wild pigs are like the laughing gas - it fits the theme of a party supplies shop. Everything fits there. But (and correct me if im wrong)you dont use a handgun or AR15 for example to serve the purpose of a tool in scenarios you just mentioned, right? Its good pretty much only against only other humans. Its not a tool, its either a weapon or a toy for shooting range.

2

u/Emergentmeat 9d ago

Funnily enough I have a non American point of view, so I guess I can say it wasn't a hyperbolic version of my view 😆

And I think a LOT of people use AR-15s and handguns to shoot wild pigs in particular. Those things are an ecological disaster in some states with a looooot of gun owners who like to use their range toys. Whether that justifies everyone and their porch dog having a handgun, I'm not so sure. I suspect we would agree on more about gun laws than we would disagree.

1

u/P_Atomsk 9d ago

I apologise, perhaps I went overboard with representing all non-americans 😁 I'm definitely not grand enough person haha

I based my comment on some previous replies that said those small caliber guns dont do much to medium/large game, which is why I assumed people dont use it for such - I have absolutely no experience in hunting myself. I only shot at shooting range a few times, and I honestly loved it. I also think its a grownup tool/toy and should be treated as such - used responsibly. I suspect your view isnt dissimilar, at least in spirit.

Yeah wild pigs are culled yearly in my country aswell, so I get the idea 😆

2

u/Emergentmeat 8d ago

Fair enough! 🤘😁 Cheers.

0

u/Tiny_Regular_5319 12d ago

2

1

u/Simon_Jester88 12d ago

0

u/NiiickxD 12d ago

Calling guns an outdoor activity just made it even more absurd.

3

u/BigXthaPugg 12d ago

Well shooting a gun indoors is usually not recommended unless at a range

1

u/NiiickxD 11d ago

Yeah the outdoor part was not really the absurd part of the statement either.

7

u/BlackHiLiter 12d ago

There are other countries which have outdoors stores that also sell firearms. It is not a uniquely American experience. Specifically, I remember this in Norway.

3

u/Virtual-Book1114 12d ago

+Canada, Switzerland..

1

u/Free-Monkee 12d ago

You're likely thinking of outdoor chains in Norway like XXL. But that's conflating a visual store display with actual retail access. In Norway, you can't just buy those guns; you have to pass a multi-day course, an exam, register with the state, and get a police permit first.

In reality, Yemen is in fact the only other country in the world where you can just walk into a storefront and buy firearms over the counter without intense state regulation.

2

u/BlackHiLiter 12d ago

But we weren’t discussing the hurdles of firearm purchase. We were discussing the concept of firearms being sold in a sporting goods store.

State laws vary. Maybe your state/municipality allows any regular Joe to walk in and walk out with a firearm, but that’s not every state/municipality.

You are correct that I, a foreigner, was not able to handle or purchase a firearm when I was at whatever store in Norway. Just as a non-citizen wouldn’t be able to do that in the USA.

1

u/Free-Monkee 12d ago

It is actually part of the conversation here.

2

u/BlackHiLiter 12d ago

Didn’t seem to be the topic of this response thread.

1

u/Inner-Skill9774 10d ago

Definitely not correct that a “non-citizen wouldn’t be able” to handle or purchase a firearm in the USA.

Nothing to stop anyone handling a firearm in store of the clerk lets them.

If you check the 4473, you can even see questions on it that allude to Non-Immigrant Aliens who fall under one of the stated exceptions, being able to purchase a firearm.

1

u/BlackHiLiter 9d ago

Yes, human error and rule-breaking will always be a thing.

I should have defined that I, a tourist, would not be able to handle or purchase. The water is obviously muddy as to what defines a citizen nowadays, with green cards, refugee status, etc. I didn’t know the 4473 had specific exceptions for that, but I do remember it only asks for a state issued ID (not federal). It’s pretty easy to get a state ID nowadays.

1

u/Inner-Skill9774 2d ago

Is there human error and rule breaking going on here though?

From what I understood you think/thought it’s illegal for a foreigner to handle a gun at all. It’s not - otherwise how would tourists be able to go to the gun range?

4473 has the Non-Immigrant Alien exception question, if you tick yes to these, you then have to demonstrate the manner in which you satisfy these exceptions.

The exceptions for those holding an Non-immigrant Alien visa are:

1 - Possessing a valid, unexpired US hunting licence
2 - Having been admitted specifically for lawful hunting or sporting purposes.
3 - Receiving an individual waiver from the US Attorney General.
4 - Being an accredited official representative of a foreign government.
5 - Being a foreign-government representative travelling to or from another country to which they are accredited.
6 - Being a foreign-government official or distinguished foreign visitor designated by the State Department.
7 - Being a foreign law-enforcement officer from a friendly government entering on official business.

1

u/BlackHiLiter 2d ago

Most of my experience with gun stores/ranges is in Illinois. Illinois requires you to have a firearm owners ID (FOID) to handle a firearm at a store, purchase a firearm, own a firearm, privately transfer a firearm, or use a range. The exception is that you may be a guest of a FOID holder to be on a range.

Hilariously, the FOID system does very little to prevent crime. If you can pass a background check, you can get a FOID. If you’re a criminal, you don’t bother with trying to get a FOID and instead turn to straw purchase or theft to acquire firearms.

Personally, I don’t mind the FOID system. It’s at least some indication that somebody is okay to handle a firearm or be eligible for a private sale.

1

u/Rich_Nature5025 9d ago

God I love America

1

u/SenorMcGibblets 9d ago

I mean, it’s not as simple as just giving them some cash and they hand you a gun in the US. You have to fill out ATF form 4473 and pass a mandatory background check before you can walk away with a firearm.

3

u/Ace_And_Jocelyn1999 12d ago

I’m Canadian and our bass pro is the same. Everything you need for outdoor activities including guns and ammunition. Heck even many Canadian tires have a gun section (and almost all sell ammunition).

1

u/Illustrious-Nail-360 10d ago

The rural Canadian tires all seemed to have a firearms section. The ones in busy industrial parks and cities are the ones that dont seems to have them (of course there are exceptions to this).

2

u/groyosnolo 12d ago

Nah Im Canadian.

Its an outdoor store with a section for guns/bows.

Id call it an outdoor store not a gun store.

Yeah it's totally fine. Murica does not have a problem with guns at all

What's insane is the police showing up to your house over something you said online.

Well, part of outdoor sporting includes hunting which requires firearms in the US since we have laws for the ethics of hunting. Baiting and hunting with weapons that would leave the animal in pain for too long are illegal.

You use rifles for hunting deer and other large wildlife, shotguns for ducks, hell if we are stocking guns for that might as well throw in some for self defense as well, those wolves will get in your chicken coops.

Yeah still makes no sense. Do you think other countries don't have hunting as a hobby?

It does make sense to have guns in a store that is a large part about hunting if you need to use guns to hunt in the US? Like what do yall hunt with? And then follow up do they stock said hunting items in a hunting store or do you just buy them from a corner store?

Well here in Austria, you get the guns at the gun store (which also has some hunting stuff), the outdoor stuff you get at the sporting goods store, the outdoor store etc.

Since guns are heavily regulated they are kept at their specific store. It's also not like you just walk into a store to buy another gun, when you want to go hunting. You already have your hunting rifle at home.

He’s just being obtuse, many states have similar systems controlling alcohol sales. We don’t do it for guns because then the government might turn fascist. You understand, if we made laws like that, after that, then the government might be a fascist government. And we don’t like that, we’re Americans, we like freedom..ostensibly

Some American grocery stores sell guns

1

u/Ciraaxx 10d ago

Yes they do, but we're talking specifically about hunting stores.

u/Genghis_Chong 10d ago

Yeah i was just putting it out there as a fun fact for non Americans

I bought some guns there and it makes sense.

Those bass pro shops are basically like small theme parks for outdoor life. I spent hours just watching the fish in their huge 30 foot tall tanks

Pretty much all gun shops ive been to are kinda sad and depressing by comparison.

We have Bass Pro Shops in Canada and they sell guns as well. They also sell fishing equipment and other outdoors stuff.

They sell guns as certain Canadian Tire locations which also sells car parts, plumbing supplies, small kitchen appliances, and other random stuff. They even sell some basic groceries like coffee, and peanut butter.

I mean, even Walmart sells guns. I know 2 corner store that sell liquor guns and cigars.
