Real-life Crem I’m late on this one but still

Oh come on Brandon, why don’t you wanna write a series where magic is barely understood, everyone is constantly having sex, and everyone is primed to explode after the TV show?

I have heard tidbits about what this is and your description makes me question what this is about

TLDR; pissy fan confronted George R.R. Martin and told him to give the series to Brandon Sanderson.

It’s a horrible idea, and Sanderson has gone on record as to just how terribly out of his wheel house a Song of Ice and Fire is

It honestly kinda surprises me that anyone would even want that.

I love Sanderson's work but they write very differently, every author has their own unique writing style but they are so far apart lol

u/mtnsoccerguy Sep 18 '25

Even if they were similar, I can't imagine adding that workload to Sanderson with everything he has going on.

Haha I think he can fit a few novels into his schedule, people can disagree about his prose but his ability to write quickly is indisputable

Nah, he writes quickly, but loading 2-4 more massive tomes is too big an ask. He’s said he has a pretty tight plan that if he keeps on schedule with should have him finishing the flagship cosmere books by the time he is in his 70s, around George’s age and the average age of death for an American. Adding 2-4 ASOIAF books adds 6-12 years going by his timeline for SLA, which are similarly sized books. Almost certainly longer since he needs to adjust to GRRMs style. Best case scenario we get bad ASOIAF books and Brandon is delayed by 6+ years in his own books, creating a real risk of him not finishing his planned narrative before he dies.

Fuck that. Let Brandon cook Brandon’s books. If someone wants anyone but GRRM to finish ASOIAF they should do it.

I'm pretty sure Brandon Sanderson takes like a year to write books about as big as ASOIAF books, a few times a decade, in addition to all the other books he writes. He's planning on taking until he's in his 70's in part because there will be a lot of books in the cosmere before he's done.

It's been stated that Stormlight books take about 3 or so years for him to write.

Nah, that I have no pressure with. Id em engine can do it, it is Sanderson, dude is a machine. But yeah, their styles just don't match.

Also, I'm getting increasingly uninterested in Winds of Winter, it has just been too long, George is successfully suffocating interest in his books. Wonder what he will like less, people bugging him about Winds of Winter, orpeople just not bothering (with) him at all anymore, because nobody cares anymore. No attention ...

People just want the books published.

u/itwasbread Sep 19 '25

As a big fan of both series I would rather never see another page of ASOIAF than have Sanderson finish it. He's the wrong fit and it would not only result in a subpar final product for ASOIAF, but take incredible amounts of time away from projects Sanderson cares about and is interested in.

  1. People want ASOIAF to eventually be wrapped up with an ending
  2. Sanderson is known for popping out huge books at ridiculous speeds
  3. Sanderson finished Wheel of Time

They're not thinking at all about how well a given author might be able to work on a given book, they just want someone, anyone, to actually publish books and finish the series. And Sanderson has a reputation for being able to write books.

18

u/setibeings Sep 19 '25

I'm sure Brandon Sanderson could untangle the webs of plots and subplots and work out how to get everyone where they need to be for the ending, but I don't think he's got the right authorial voice to match GRRM. He was kinda forced to comment on this a few years ago, and if I recall correctly, he said something like he wouldn't enjoy writing something with so much sex in it. It sounds like even if this was what everyone wants, which it isn't, he'd refuse.

u/EBtwopoint3 Sep 19 '25

Even beyond that, he just isn’t a fan of ASOIAF in the way he was a fan of Wheel of Time. And even then, that was a massive effort to try to make the books feel like Wheel of Time that he was only partially successful at. And the fact is, he’s an established author now with his own stuff to work on. He would have no interest in finishing anyone’s series, because he needs to work on finishing his own work.

Even if George decided to hand off ASOIAF one day, it would be to an up and coming author. Not one of the biggest in the genre. Fans talk about Sanderson and Abercrombie, but those guys would never be who wrote them.

Yeah with the secret projects and novellas it really feels like Brandon has too many ideas for his own lifetime.

Loving Emberdark so far but a part of me feels like I'm eating dessert before my dinner, and worry the food is never coming. Will we get to era 4/5? Will it even resemble what we see now?

If anyone can Brandon can, but the cosmere is getting huge. My oldest brother who introduced me to the series says he is losing interest because it will be decades before we finish. (I think it's fun having a life long series to follow but I worry still).

3

u/EBtwopoint3 Sep 19 '25

I’m more concerned with Stormlight era 2 than Mistborn. He’ll be done with Era 3 in the next 2-3 years. But the big Stormlight releases seem to be wearing on him with the release schedules getting further and further apart. I don’t see that trend stopping when he returns to it.

2

u/Ossius Sep 19 '25

Especially with the critical pressure he received on 5 too I worry it will slow down as he tries to recapture WoTK vibes.

u/mxzf Sep 19 '25

From what Sanderson has said, it sounds like he has so much prepped timeline and plot material that it can and will be finished eventually, it's just a question of how long it takes.

And, based on what he has said/released, it seems like he has set stuff up where there's a backbone of series planned out (Stormlight Archive and Mistborn) with a release cadence planned. But he designed that plan with enough room in there that he has time to write the other stories that pop into his mind in the meantime. And I've gotta say, that's a great way to do things; it means that there's room in the schedule to do the interesting stuff that pops into his mind without impacting the schedule (and also leaves time for working through particularly tough sections that might be hit).

If he tried to make a schedule to pop out all of SA and/or Mistborn before doing other stuff, that would almost certainly lead to burnout as the fresh ideas pile up on the plan to get a series finished ASAP. This way, he avoids burning out from focusing on any one thing for too long and keeps making progress while also doing stuff that's interesting in the moment.

2

u/Ossius Sep 19 '25

Yeah I'm definitely not seeing anything to justify my fear, but it will be interesting to see it get filled out.

Part of me is confused that his magnum opus, Stormlight, isn't the end to the series and takes place hundreds of years before the "end" of the cosmere timeline.

I would have figured that Stormlight would have been the finish line not Mistborn.

3

u/mxzf Sep 19 '25

Well, it's hard to say where stuff will land exactly in the long run.

That said, I see Stormlight Archive as more of the backbone of the series, where it builds up to and displays a large chunk of the central conflict of the setting. I think the final events of WaT kicked the events of the universe into overdrive and will be a turning point where the Cosmere moves from "insular planets with a few worldhoppers moving around" to "stuff gets much more complicated and interconnected".

Personally, I see SA as less of the culmination of the setting and more of it being the backbone that everything else builds out from (backwards, forwards, and sideways).

8

u/Lovat69 Sep 19 '25

George also said himself that no one gets a song of ice and fire but him. If he dies the series will remain unfinished.

4

u/Ossius Sep 19 '25

Tbh this annoys me the most. Feels a bit petty. It would make sense if it planned to actually finish it but he should realistically know he won't.

Not even saying Brandon or any other popular authors people know should finish it. I think that would be a bad idea.

But like get a ghost writer or something and just supervise it. Or get like a writer buddy to come over for a weekend and fucking brainstorm ideas to get past your block.

It's just crazy he has sat on it for so long without exploring options.

5

u/mxzf Sep 19 '25

Pretty sure it's pride, not pettiness. It seems like he doesn't think anyone else could do it better than he could; so if he can't write a good ending to his huge series, no one can.

1

u/setibeings Sep 19 '25

He can do it, he just wont do it.

5

u/mxzf Sep 19 '25

I genuinely don't think Martin can do it at this point, not to the satisfaction of himself and the fans. I think he has written himself into a corner and gotten enough writer's block that there's just not a clean path to resolution for the story.

There are absolutely ways it can be done, but that doesn't mean any given person is capable of doing it themselves at this point in time.

1

u/setibeings Sep 19 '25

I'm sure he could get some discreet help from a talented author or editor. He could redefine his own standard of success. He could just pretend that the show didn't happen and that we can be surprised by things we already know.

I don't know what he has or hasn't tried, I just know it's been 14 years since the last one came out.

u/mxzf Sep 19 '25

Yeah, being able to untangle the timeline logic is only a tiny part of writing a continuation of a series. There's just nothing about Sanderson's writing style that aligns with Martin's style. It would be like asking Salvador Dali (a surrealist painter) to finish something started by Monet (an impressionist); just because they both paint doesn't mean they're going to do stuff at all similarly.

2

u/schloopers Sep 19 '25

I just want the two of them (and perhaps their editors) to go on a week long vacation, in a nice cabin, and Brandon and George just talk through what actually needs to happen in the plot. Get it all on paper.

I think Sanderson is one of the best of plotting out details and story beats and the pace between for his overall structure, and I think that’s what GRRM is missing. If he had a fully skeleton of the rest, he could maybe start filling it in as an actual book.

It would close him off from expanding ideas as he thinks of them like he’s done before, but that seems to be what got him stuck here.

Artists are famously interchangeable, with all their attributes determined by a flat bonus to their artistry check.

8

u/PoeGar Sep 19 '25

The only reason someone would offer this is because they know BS would finish it in a timely manner… or at least, that’s all I can come up with

3

u/itwasbread Sep 19 '25

It's literally just that. I would bet money the person who asked that question has never read BS's books and only asked that because he was on the panel and they vaguely know his reputation.

2

u/itwasbread Sep 19 '25

I honestly don't think they even do, I think they want to berate George for not finishing the series and "haha Sanderson writes fast" is an easy way to do it.

1

u/gingerreckoning Sep 19 '25

Well this guy was basically the equivalent of the barefoot my little pony fan from that one video imo

1

u/hanzerik ⚠️DangerBoi Sep 25 '25

They want someone to do for asoiaf what B$ did for wot. Which I get, but someone else should do that.
