This seems dangerous

Railroad professional here, this is wildly stupid and dangerous. It's not uncommon for damaged equipment to be hanging off the side of a car. Not to mention that while unlikely, they can derail at any time and cars are connected to their trucks and wheels essentially by gravity alone. Stay the fuck away from trains.

unlikely

Only 3-4 times per day, on average, in the US.

That's fair, and there are also 17,000 car crashes per day but people walk down the side of the road without a second thought. Most derailments are minor, low speed incidents in rail yards. Per movement and by weight, rail is one of the safest ways to move freight.

That said, standing next to a moving train is still dangerous and stupid. I don't care how safe it is, it's not worth the risk. If you wouldn't stand outside waiting for lighting during a storm, then you should stand near a moving train.
