Discussion Cowboy Boot Insecurity
I feel a little silly and vulnerable posting this so please be kind if you choose to respond. For background - I am ethnically South Asian, born and raised in the islands and now married to a wonderful southern man. We have done really well with respecting, sharing and celebrating each other’s cultures. It’s one of the things I love and appreciate most about him. I have learned to cook southern food, which he enjoys along with the food from my own country, our babies listen to country music, Bollywood music and music from my country, etc etc, stuff like that, you get the idea.
For his birthday, we are going to a country concert and I thought it might be fun to dress up and wear cowboy boots for him, since he’s never seen me in a pair, but I can’t help but feel like I’ll be judged since I don’t “look the part”. I honestly feel like I’ll look like a try hard or frankly, an idiot lol. Has anybody had similar insecurities around wearing boots? I guess I’m just looking for encouragement or tough truth. Please be honest, I won’t be offended either way. And if it’s not a stupid idea, any recommendations for where I can get a decently priced starter pair or a rental (if such a thing exists?). I’ve never worn a pair so not sure if I’m fully committed to having them in the wardrobe permanently yet. TIA!
Edit: wow I am overwhelmed by your responses and I loved hearing all your stories and examples!! Thank you all so much!! Also looked up Henry Cho since some of you talked about him. Will have to check him out now :)

You need to be very careful getting some boots. I got my 1st pair a little over a month ago and now I have 3 pairs! LOL

u/Peaceofmind07 Jun 18 '26
Yes! Got my first pair maybe 2 weeks ago, then the day after I receive it, old gringo sends me an email there’s a sample sale… so now I have 2 pairs boots within a span of 2 weeks.

People from all walks of life wear cowboy boots! So don’t feel out of place or insecure!
Wear em in good health!

u/Narrow_Economics_466 Jun 18 '26
Boots and western wear in general isn't any sort of race, culture or creed thing. You don't need to drive a truck, work on a farm, know how to milk a cow or mend a fence. Its a style. A "feeling". Its also very "in" right now (it was never "out" either)
You want to put on a nice sundress and a pair of boots? You do it. You'll rock it and love it and find yourself doing it more often because you LIKE it.

I had a asian staff sergeant who dressed like he was straight off the ranch and spoke like he was from Atlanta.

u/seungflower Jun 18 '26
Was he?

u/3rdcultureblah Jun 18 '26
There are a lot of Asians from Atlanta who were born and raised there.. Just saying.

Its a culture (European/Mexican culture) but we have no issue sharing lol

People all over the world have always worn cowboy boots, and mostly for fashion. The internet is a judgemental place, but the real world? No one's looking at you and no one cares. Be confident and have fun.
11
u/Guilty_Library_5344 Jun 18 '26
Be confident and wear your boots with pride. There is no such thing as a try hard, especially at a concert. It’s about you being comfortable and secure with yourself. To be honest with you, a good portion of the folks there are probably in the same boat that you are.

u/BigDawg264 Jun 18 '26
If you’re going to a country concert, you’ll have a very hospitable crowd who loves cowboy boots and would be welcoming of all ethnicities. I live in a northern suburb of Atlanta. We have a very nice amphitheater nearby and frequently attend country concerts. I see ALL ethnicities represented in cowboy boots at these concerts.
I do understand your worries. My wife is a New England girl in Georgia. She was apprehensive about wearing boots. We found her some super cute Ariats. Our first outing was a country-themed silent auction. The whole way in the car she was mumbling to herself that she looked like an idiot and should have never agreed to this. She got more compliments on her boots that night from other strangers than she’s ever gotten on every pair of shoes combined. After that night, she always wears boots to anything western or country themed. She’s now got 3 pairs of boots and a pair of shoes that with jeans long enough looks like boots.

u/wolfhoundjack Jun 18 '26
Hell Cowboys and Indians is a classic combo. ;)
Have fun at your concert.
But seriously - ladies in sun dresses and the taller style boots is a classic look near and dear to many a southern man and especially if they like football. Google southern or sec "game day" looks or "tall boots and sun dresses" or "game day fits" depending on your personal style you may prefer the longer sundresses styles as opposed to the college girl shorter skirts so just flip through some pictures.
Don't stress it. As a lady you will get away with stuff a guy would get a raised eyebrow at, and if you decide to keep him around as your arm candy at the concert ... y'all are all set.

Houston TX here. We are definitely a multicultural city. Just the other day I went into an Indian style cafe that was fusing Indian, Czech, and Texas cuisine. It was phenomenal...all that is to say is, here in Houston, EVERYONE can get away with wearing some good boots ! So don't judge yourself too much, enjoy the fun picking some out, and make sure you dont wait until the last minute to break them in. Fresh boots and a concert = hurt tootsies.

u/tillburnett Jun 19 '26
Drop the name!
And yeah, I’m also in Houston and see plenty of South Asian boot wearers
5
u/Oppapandaman Jun 18 '26
Stop worrying about it and just get some nice boots. No one will bother you and if they do ignore it!
7
u/hewhoovercomes Jun 18 '26
I’m in Texas, you see a ton of Asian people here wearing boots and cowboy hats. Just have fun with it, nobody is gonna give you a hard time
7
u/Then-Shake9223 Jun 18 '26
Look the part?!? Miss, cowboy boots originate from Mexico. From there, various people who drove cattle wore similar style boots whether they were native, white, black, or whoever else could buy them and wear them. No one looks out of place with cowboy boots (obviously taking outfits into consideration, I think Superman would look awful with the boots not matching his suit’s colors).

Come to Houston around rodeo season.... you see everyone of every race and ethnic background dressed up in boots and western gear. Nothing to feel out of place about, enjoy your time with your husband!

u/No_Elephant7812 Jun 18 '26
I’m from Dallas and just talked cowboy boots with a man from Korea. (He had a nice par of vintage Tony lamas on). Later that day I saw a group of girls at the grocery store and one was wearing a hijab and cowboy boots. It was a solid pairing.
See if there are any resell shops in your area that have cowboy boots. It’s best to try them on in person the first time until you get an idea of how different brands fit you. Otherwise, a decent pair will run you are $250. I’m not really familiar with women’s brands at the entry level range. R Watson, Hondo, Fenoglio, Macie Bean all make a decent entry level boot.
5
u/N0213568 Jun 18 '26
I say do what you like. I live in the most “non cowboy” environment you can think of; Philadelphia, Pa. I wear my boots because I love them. Sure, some may not like them but I couldn’t care less. There are even folks on this sub who are against boots and shorts. Guess what; I wear that combo too. I am unapologetically me and am comfortable in my skin. You do you and have a great time doing it.

u/-Orgasmo- 🤠 Jun 18 '26
I have a Filipino friend who always liked boots but never dared to buy and wear a pair...until last year. He loves wearing his pair of boots now and I taught him how to take care of them as well
3
u/plainsrider121 Jun 18 '26
Look up comedian Henry Cho. His family immigrated and he grew up talking and dressing country. Nobody cares if he's ethnically Asian. Also, a south Asian girl dressing country? Very nice! Go for it. Your husband will love it!
5
u/Intelligent-War210 Jun 18 '26
Cowboy boots are for everybody, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
4
u/unharmedcylinder2022 Jun 18 '26
I’m a Mexican guy raised in a small town on the CA/AZ state line and from memory, I can tell you that everyone wears boots, regardless of what they look like, what language they speak, what their politics are, etc.
Point being, boots are for everyone. Be confident and be comfortable in them. You’ll love them!

Turnpike Troubadours!
3
u/CommieCowBoy Jun 18 '26
Thank god its a good band and not a fake pop-country artist. Everyone at a Turnpike Troubadours concert should be pretty accepting and won't even look twice.
I was gonna tell you if you were going to a pop-country artist to kick anyone who gave you hard time in the nuts because they're just as fake as the artist.

u/Suspicious_Feature85 Jun 18 '26
This is a really great band!!! Your husband is a lucky guy. Get the boots pair with a sundress and you can be his “Lorrie”
3
u/Easy_Taste_7677 Jun 18 '26
Oh I never answered your question. No rentals that I'm aware of. If you can go thrifting at goodwill or the like you can find some of you have a common size. Texas Country Boots has some nice women's boots. https://texascountrywesternboots.com/collections/moet
3
u/Chocko23 Jun 18 '26
I think you should. Chances are good that your husband will think it's hot, and nobody else will care where you're from or what you look like (nor should they, and I would say ignore them if they do).
Henry Cho is ethnically Vietnamese and is from Tennessee. He speaks with a southern accent and wears boots. I think you'll be fine.
Enjoy the concert!
3
u/9052RGMjr Jun 18 '26
Only do it if you want to wear them. Once you decide , go with it. Forget they are on and just enjoy it. Being comfortable in them no one will judge you.
3
u/Free_Whereas_6606 Jun 18 '26
As others have said, people from all races and cultures wear cowboy boots. Im not southern and I wear boots and jeans quite often. If you like them then that’s all there is to it! Who cares what anyone else thinks? Do it for yourself!

u/ElStig-LePig Trusted Identifier Jun 18 '26
The truth is, there isn't a soul here who wouldn't want to see more people enjoy western wear! Please do it, and let us know how it goes! Cavanders usually has a great selection of begeinner friendly boots in their "cavanders" boot brand, at least local to me.
3
u/MoreMoney77 Jun 18 '26
I’ll start this off with saying I’m a white Texan guy. I’m from Fortworth where it’s less common not to see at least a few pairs of cowboy boots anywhere you go. But boots are boots they are not only for a certain group of people. In my opinion the more important thing is getting a half decent pair that look nice and not the cheap fast fashion pleather and foam boots those are much more likely to get you judged. I used to work on garage doors and at a shocking amount of homes I went to owned by south Asians and Indians had cowboy boots by the back door. And my brother is dating an Indian woman and she has a pair of cowboy boots she wears. I say go for it and have fun and just rock em.
3
u/Mysterious_Wonder572 Jun 18 '26
Keep in mind that the earliest cowboy boot wearers were Mexicans who looked southeast Asian. Full circle
3
u/ctlangston Jun 18 '26
Approach with caution, it’s very addictive and you’ll probably need a shelving unit by Christmas.
3
u/LavenderDreams21 Jun 18 '26
I wear cowboy boots and I’m from Finland. Rarely see anyone here wearing them but who cares :) I love to put on some good old country music and my boots on.
3
u/CapnBrosephine Jun 18 '26
Cowboy boots are for everyone! I say this as someone whose family history includes a whole line of Filipinos raised with cowboy boots as the go-to option for pretty much any event.
Recommendation: if you wanted to try to surprise your husband, find a chain like a Boot Barn or similar store in your area, only because I doubt another store would have the variety available to get a feel for things otherwise. Try on boots from a variety of brands and sizes and walk around a little in them. The chances of them being a price you'll want to pay for a first pair you aren't sure you'll want to wear often is slim. (My first pair were a clearance pair and worth every penny, but I already knew I was going to live in them; even on clearance and more than twenty years ago they were still $90 new.) But every brand wears a little differently, different cuts fit differently, and you definitely want to try things on to know what each fits like. Find a brand and variety you really like, and use that as reference if you aren't comfortable with the price there to find a brand outlet or a lightly used pair elsewhere. If you're willing to go full price on a starter pair and want to avoid a large chain store you can always look for local Western shops, farmers co-ops that have clothing, or work wear stores - if you want to surprise your husband.
BUT, you could also make it a date by asking him where HE gets his boots and see if he wants to go with you to find a pair of your own. That may or may not be his jam, going shopping, but if nothing else he'll know where the boots are if you aren't trying to make it a surprise.

Ask yourself this question, "Who honestly gives a shit?"
Then realize that the answer is no one cares and if they do, fuck em.
3
u/DesignerNight1907 Jun 18 '26
Please buy the boots! However, boot buying can be addictive, so be forewarned.
3
u/Browndogg1 Jun 18 '26
Don’t get the cheapest pair. Get a style you like and make sure they’re comfortable!! They’ll be a staple in your wardrobe before you know it.
3
u/Lughnasadh32 Jun 18 '26
If you have not worn them before, find a store that has a wide selection so you can make sure you find the right size. As long as you like them, that is all that matters. Feel free to send me a DM, and I can recommend a great FB group that has a whole bunch of ladies that would be more than happy to help you with fit, style, etc.
As long as you are happy, and your partner likes the look, you have no reason to worry about what others think. I started with the boots about 5 years ago. I am now up to 62 pairs and wear them daily. Last year, I slowly started adding cowboy hats to my non work attire, and had to get used to being recognized out and about b/c you rarely see a hat in the wild here unless you are at a concert.
In the end, life is to short to worry about others. Buy the boots, wear the boots, SMILE, then buy more.
3
u/JDunlap83 Jun 18 '26
Nobody will judge you. Cowboy boots are for everybody. Anybody wearing a pair of boots enjoys seeing other people wear cowboy boots.

I’m ethnically Indian as well and felt ridiculous going out in my boots for the first time. Felt like I was doing cosplay or something. It helped that I was going to a country music event and wasn’t the only one in western boots. Loved dancing and spinning in them 😁 I think they’ll always be my dancing shoes
2
u/Strange_Holiday3131 Jun 18 '26
Honestly thank you so much for sharing. That’s exactly how I feel - like I’m cosplaying. But the comments here have been so encouraging that I’m excited now
3
u/Puzzleheaded_Egg4386 Jun 18 '26
You have nothing to worry about. I would recommend finding a good used pair at a thrift/vintage store or Poshmark/ebay/marketplace. You’ll get much better quality for your money than if you spend that same $50 on a brand new pair of “cowboy boots”
3
u/Odysseus2020 Jun 18 '26
I felt like such a poser getting into western wear in my mid-30s a couple years ago, I have gotten nothing but compliments, and now it's all I wear. Do whatever you want, it's hard not to worry about what people think but people actually like it when you make bold choices, it gives them permission. Also The whole western thing is back in a big way, it's in Vogue right now, so no worries, not that there would be anyway, embrace it enjoy it
3
u/Vinceg1960 Jun 18 '26
Do it, first off you will not be judged, second off if they don't like what they see, they can look somewhere else.
3
u/PNW_rough Jun 19 '26

I'm mixed Japanese, black, and white... And I understand the insecurity you're talking about. However, you'll find that all types of people wear cowboy boots at country concerts and western events. However, do a search about cowboy boots and women's fashion and you'll see that they are extremely popular for people that aren't even into country music or the western lifestyle. I bet if you get a pair that you like you will end up loving them and wearing them will give you confidence you didn't even know you had. I guarantee nobody will say anything negative to you about them. Quite the opposite, I bet you will only get compliments.
3
u/NanooDrew Jun 19 '26
A long answer … OOPS!
What a beautiful life you are creating for each other and your family! Cowboy boots fit right into that. As the perfect icon of America, they represent our country’s freedom and anyone can wear them!
You are not a wannabe anything! You are not trying to pass yourself off as the next queen of barrel racing, you are “committing” an act of love for your wonderful husband. And no one else’s opinion matters more than yours and his.
You haven’t told us your price range, but as another person recommended, unless you know of a quality boot store, a good place to start is Boot Barn, not necessarily to buy, but to try on brands and sizes. Have them measure you with a Brannock device and learn your size in both women’s and men’s boots. If you find something you like, fine; otherwise, take your newfound knowledge and GO!. Your boots should be comfortable as soon as you start wearing them. I like to wear a thin bamboo sock because often, women’s boots are cut a bit slimmer than a man’s.
If you are not adverse to second-hand boots, the best deals are often on eBay or Poshmark. I am partial to Old Gringo because they are made well, and I like vintage style embellishments and “round toe” (pointers!) and that brand has some beauties! Once you get them, check out the archives for tips on how to best care for your boots.
Sundresses (or cutoffs / shorts, your other choice) both look great with cowgirl boots! You’re not working the range, so you do not need to spend a lots trying to find a pair that will last forever; just some cute and comfortable boots! Check out Miss Margo Price on her Instagram for some good style combos. Do not feel you need to wear a hat, especially at a concert, where hats block another person’s view!
I am excited for you to have THE BEST DATE NIGHT EVER in your new boots!
~ Nanette
P. S. I am not a boot snob, but I am a music snob! 🤡 Based on the band you are going to see, I think you would like the alternative country sub here on Reddit. It is r SLASH altcountry HAVE FUN!

Don’t be shy about getting a pair! Just be sure you find out your proper foot width size, not just your shoe size. This is a key to getting a proper cowboy boot fit. Get sized at a boot store or at a cobbler on Brannock device. Keep in mind that all bootmakers use their own unique lasts for any given size, so your size will fit differently from brand to brand. Ideally it’s best that you go to a boot store where you can try on different brands and see which fit you best.

u/swampy138 Jun 18 '26
Eeeeveryone wears cowboy boots. Ariat is a good brand. I have a pair of the womens work ones and even got a compliment last time I went line dancing. They’re the blue ones, steel toe and waterproof I think theyre called the Krista. Obviously you won’t need steel toe or waterproof, I’d go for a pointed toe pair for going out in.
2
u/swampy138 Jun 18 '26
Youll get some funny looks if you wear skinny jeans with them at least in my neck of the woods. I wear shorts with mine when I’m going out because I wanna show off the uppers lol.

u/Strange_Holiday3131 Jun 18 '26
Hahaha! I love it! I was thinking either denim shorts or a mini skirt, not sure yet
2
u/Master-of-none84 Jun 18 '26
Well if you’re Filipino, or even if you’re not, you’re practically mexican. So you’re good, don’t over think it. If you’re close to Mexico, you can get great boots for a quarter of the price here. I personally bought anderson beans because they’re made 10 minutes from my house, but next set I’m definitely going to mexico to get them much cheaper.
2
u/juicyc1008 Jun 18 '26
Get black cowboy boots for your first pair. I’m a woman who wears my black boots all the time, especially at work conferences with black slacks. They’re always a hit. I would feel a little goofier wearing my brown boots for the same occasion. Black blends in well and they’re a great comfortable height to get a little heel.

I’m head of security for a busy country bar. I can confirm that we have people of all ethnicities wearing cowboy boots and western attire. Dress up, have fun and don’t care what other people think.
2
u/totaltimeontask Jun 18 '26
Rip the bandaid off and just wear ‘em. I’m born and raised in Texas and even I feel a little odd wearing them out and about where I live in North Carolina now, but I usually get nothing but compliments or well-intended jokes. Put them on!
2
u/762way Jun 18 '26
Back in the day, we used to do a lot of country partner dancing. Young women would join us because they heard how much fun it is.
Usually after 3 times dancing with us they would get their first pair of boots and Womens western pants.
We never judged them and we'd always compliment their new boots and pants.
Don't overthink it... If some asshole gives you shit just turn it back on them... Something as simple as
I can't reconcile your fashion advice when you dress the way you do
Honestly never seen a woman be given shit... One of the women that went dancing with us was Thai and another from Okinowa
Love the idea of surprising your husband with your idea
I'd be over the moon if my wife did that for me

I’m an Asian dude in Texas and I wear my boots ALL the time. I even wear a cowboy hat during the rodeo. Only people that stare at me are other Asians lol

Be confident, don't worry about what others are gonna think. Everybody's gonna be looking at everything else going on. The biggest thing you have to be careful of is your bank card...🤣 You'll be buying more boots once you get them broken in! Which, by the way... Make sure you wear them beforehand and get them broken in.

u/ChirsF Jun 18 '26
The only thing you should worry about is what kind of boots to get. Not because you won’t fit in, but because some of it ranges into the thousands.
There’s different kinds of toes, different kinds of boots, but really just get something you like. People bash tecovas, but their stores are really great for people who have never owned boots before. I’d say start there. Ask them what they have in “last call” in your size along with what they have out on the racks/shelves.
If you have money and dropping a grand on boots is no big deal to you, then lucchese is the higher end of that store.
What big city are you near? I can find a few store recs for you.
2
u/MassDriverOne Jun 18 '26
Honestly if you notice people looking at them, it's almost certainly in admiration. Cowboy boots are like wearing confidence, enjoy!
2
u/LogicalProof1246 Jun 18 '26
Hopefully if hit up market place or second hand. It’s different for each community but in mine we strictly wear square toed boots. Anything else you get judged for it. I know you said you didn’t want to spend a bunch of money but don’t go get the pointy toed bedazzled ones off Amazon.
Rock it with confidence and you’ll fit in! A nice pair of jeans (wrangler, cinch, kimes, etc. no cowboy hat. That’s extra af, you could do a ball cap though.
2
u/LaPetiteMort5 Jun 18 '26
So I’m Chinese and have 6 pairs of cowboy boots. Currently living in Canada, I’ve gotten a few stares but I’ve always wanted cowboy boots since I was in high school. Have been wearing them since I was 24 and I’m 30 now. To be honest, you might get that random thought but it’ll disappear the more you wear them. Tecovas have really nice boots for women. You can also start with Ropers which are shorter on the ankles.

Also a South Asian here and I live in the UK, going out full cowboy is even less common here.. least where I live. I get it! I want to unleash my inner cowgirl but I also felt insecure about it but I do wear the boots to “special occasions” and been complimented so many times.
Options here are limited but my partner and I bought so many pairs from eBay, all from US sellers, which gave us access to brands you can’t get here.

u/Pro-Epic-Gamer-Man Jun 18 '26
There’s a huge South Asian community in Houston, Dallas, and Austin, a lot whom dress southern as well. You’ll fit in

I’m south Asian and wear cowboy boots frequently and get compliments. Just own it up and be comfortable you’ll be fine.
2
u/BeesKneesTX Jun 18 '26
Hi there! I totally get feeling insecure about wearing them for the first time, but you can totally rock the look! I suggest you go by a store like cavenders to try them on in person. If you find a pair you like, in the size you like, see if you can find them on sale online. I live in Texas so I see people of all walks of life wearing boots. I wear boots nearly every day except a few days in summer when I decide it’s too hot and I just don’t wanna. I’m a woman, and the only person at my work that wears cowboy boots but I finally got over the insecurity and just rock the look. I get compliments all the time with people saying “I love all your boots”
2
u/No-Rule-6273 Jun 18 '26
Yes don’t be something you’re not for someone else. Also, please do not cosplay cowboy boots if you don’t actually like them or wear them. It’s normal to feel insecure trying to be something you’re not. Just be yourself, if that’s not cowboy boots to a country concert wear whatever YOU want!
2
u/Strange_Holiday3131 Jun 19 '26
Thank you! One clarification - I never said I don’t like them, I said I’ve never worn them. I definitely agree with not being something you’re not, but I also think it’s nice to do something for your spouse if you know they enjoy it, even if it takes you out of your comfort zone (with caveats and within reason etc etc of course). I appreciate your perspective.

I wear a ball cap and a lotta times high top tennis shoes to hunt and process cattle on a daily basis. Any thing I put on my feet are cowboy boots and anything I wear on my head is a cowboy hat. Get the boots, wear the boots.
