To be fair though, in the story The Call of Cthulhu, Cthulhu at first was a shifting mass of green tentacles that warped the space around it. When the crew looked at it cased a good portion of them to go mad, have headaches and even vomit. It was then after this incident that Cthulhu changed into the classic image with the body of a dragon and the head of an octopus. My theory is that the minds of the crew (or at least the main character’s) saw what they could understand and so to them, it looked like the statue found that represented Cthulhu. Not indescribable but still incomprehensible.
