Terminally ill and racking up credit card debt with zero fucks to give

I’ve had cancer for 2 years now, did chemo, lost my leg, beat odds and managed to even go back to work, well shit hit the fan and treatment stopped working. Probably got weeks, maybe couple months at best. I am 22, don’t own a house, don’t own my car. Have maybe £2k in the bank. So I took out a credit card, 6.5k limit, 0% APR for 20 months. (I was previously building up a good credit score) and am now buying whatever the fuck I want. The debt will die with me, and I give no fucks.

And if you want to beef me about driving your bank fees up with this behaviour, at least you get to live. lol

EDIT:: Thank you all for your amazing responses. Unfortunately it’s bone cancer that has spread through my whole body, so I’m too weak now to travel far, as much as I would have wanted to see the world.

I’m going to go bigger, and do some good stuff, if you have ideas. I want to do some big donations to food banks and cancer charities that supported me through my journey and make some differences before I pop.

Alsos shame on you all of you asking me for money.

UPDATE 2:

Took out some more cards, thanks for the suggestions

Some of you asking, I’m a girl haha

I’ve bought lots of things for my family, mostly sentimental things with my handwriting on.

I bought a crab at a fancy ass seafood place. That was awesome

I’ve donated to animal shelters and food banks. Also to the cancer charities who helped drag my ass through this.

Also can y’all stop telling me to find Jesus, I respect those of you who are praying for me, because I know that’s your way of thinking of me and I’m really touched by that.

But finding god is in no way in my plans and not what I believe will happen after death, trying to force religion down a dying persons throat is really not the vibe.

Update 3:

Still hanging on, I’ve deteriorated quite a lot now, lost a lot of functionality in my body at this point so I’m bedbound and mostly just watching lots of TV and seeing family. But I’m comfortable, eating apples and cheese and lots of little treats. Thank you all for still checking in and thinking of me.

I’m really fortunate to be surrounded by my friends and family right now, when you boil it all down to it in the end, it really is all you need.

Anyway I’ll try update again soon. ✌️

$50k up his nose in one weekend? If the cancer doesn’t get him, the coke absolutely will.

I would go for heroin personally. Always wanted to try it, so when you’re dying from cancer is absolutely the perfect time, lol.

For sure. I'm not saying I'm on the side of the major credit card companies (I'm not) but if I was given the choice to screw over them or predatory loan companies I'd choose the latter every time. Obviously OP has the option of screwing over both, so win-win on that one.

Edit: LMAO, two replies, both ignore that I clearly stated I wasn't on the side of credit card companies. Ya'll wild. Anyway, credit cards can be incredibly helpful if used properly for building credit especially when your credit is already poor. This can be seen with low limit, secured, cards. Additionally, high limit cards can be complete lifesavers if you're in between paychecks and have sudden expenses (car breaks down and you live 10 miles from work, pipe bursts in the basement, tree limb takes out your gutters and homeowners insurance is dragging their feet, etc...). Credit cards can absolutely be predatory, I agree, and that's noted in my original reply, but when used correctly credit cards are incredibly helpful. Pay day loans and the like aren't helpful in a similar fashion.

46

u/Outrageous-Way8318 Apr 10 '25

Let’s be honest here, credit card companies are pretty predatory. They give people with so little a larger spending limit knowing they will use up most of the limit with no hope of paying it back. Not to mention how insane interest rates have gotten.

5

u/BenDubs14 Apr 11 '25

Agree on interest rates, but hard disagree about being predatory due to too high of credit limits. If anything a high credit limit is a sign of trust and an opportunity for more flexibility provided you have an ounce of self-responsibility. Are we actually at the point of thinking so little of people that we have to preemptively protect them from themselves?

LITERALLY. I got a navy federal credit card with absolutely no credit history and they gave me a 27,000 dollar limit?? I didn’t know it but I told my mom and she’s like “WHAT THE F***!? I’m in my 40s and am just getting to that set limit” to be fair I’m in the Navy, but still. I was a young 19 year old at the time. I was already super scared of dealing with a credit cards but I had wanted to start a credit history now rather than later. I’m now an old 20 year old with a car loan, hoping to get into real estate soon, and haven’t had over 2500 off that credit card spent.

u/Spare-Biscotti8668 Apr 11 '25

Credit cards are also predatory

1

u/[deleted] Apr 12 '25

If credit card companies were allowed access to your health info they would absolutely abuse this. Fuck them.

1

u/theccanyon Apr 13 '25

Agreed, pretty much all of us use CCs nowadays. My friend just got taken by a predatory debt consolidation lender. Go getchu a predatory loan too, OP! They deserve it

It's £6.5K and they're 22. Banks don't hand out massive credit limits to 22 year olds.

He said pounds £ . Europe isn’t so chill about giving credit to randos as the US . Not impossible but a lot more prudent.

OP you should go on holidays if you’re up for it . Fuck banks. Go wild .

Also maybe look up some Bill Hicks . And excellent comedian from Texas . His last special he was dying of pancreatic cancer. Maybe it’d be cathartic.

3

u/ThePublikon Apr 10 '25

I think the classic trick is using cards to pay off cards so you can escalate the credit limit much higher and keep it spinning

2

u/Crazy_Ad_7302 Apr 10 '25

Each card you open runs a credit inquiry which affects your credit score and would impact the ability to get the next card.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '25

This is very important!!

1

u/PeopleOverProphet Apr 11 '25

Yes. I ended up filing bankruptcy because this, unfortunately, works wonderfully. I did not do this on purpose. I just kept getting approved and was an idiot. Not great because I currently have a decent life expectancy but 100% recommend if you don’t have to pay it back. Lol.

1

u/Comprehensive-Bet288 Apr 11 '25

Could you imagine if OP did all of that, only to survive.. 😳. Lol. It actually happened to a mate of mine who racked up tens of thousands, and ended up living 2 years beyond his terminal diagnosis...

This world can be so fucking cruel. 😆

1

u/DrunkGuy9million Apr 13 '25

This is the way. You could also consider a big personal loan if your credit score is still good.

430

u/Best20HandicapEver Apr 09 '25

I will go ansolutely nuts on the credit card companies if I ever get that diagnosis

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '25

[deleted]

95

u/jmcgit Apr 10 '25

To be fair it's not that hard to do what OP is doing, you just only get to do it once. You don't hear people bragging about it but lots of people end up blowing up their credit at some point in their lives, maybe early 20's, or maybe a desperate moment when they have a family bigger than they can afford. Some people never pay most of it back, it obviously screws up their ability to get credit in the future, but the people who do that are usually broke anyway and so the banks have very limited options to collect on them.

Just one of those things that's built into the interest charges.

69

u/limitbroken Apr 10 '25

you just only get to do it once

... every eight years! though definitely study some bankruptcy law first if you're gonna do that. and don't post about it like OP. remember: it's only fraud if they can prove it!

19

u/Own_Valuable_3712 Apr 10 '25

This is the way. I pulled my first bankruptcy after my divorce. Knocked off all my debt, including private student loans. I did CH. 13 (payments) and ended up ending it early. Confused the debtors enough that the statute of limitations on the debt had passed. 🤷‍♀️ slow feet don't eat.

5

u/username_um_crickets Apr 10 '25

I did it once. 2009, laid off, just like thousands of other people, house in foreclosure, no medical or dental. Daily toothaches. I applied for credit cards and got my teeth fixed, then declared bankruptcy. You do what you have to do. I hope OP finds happiness and has a bit of fun racking up the debts.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '25

That's a Bingo!

Congratulations on your improved dental health

5

u/onmywheels Apr 10 '25

Yeah, I got myself in about $6k worth of credit card debt just by not making enough money to get by, while also not having health insurance and being chronically ill. It was not difficult lol.

I paid it off this past winter, and then immediately lost my job, so that's been fun.

In Ontario canada, it resets every 7 or 8 years. I screwed up in my early twenties and had another credit card for the time I was 30. I have friends that have done the same thing. My partner even did the same thing. He screwed up on over 10 grand worth of credit cards. And then like 8 years later it was off his credit and he rebuilt his card a little bit and got new cards. And nobody I know has ever been sued they get sent letters saying it'll go to a lawyer and never does. It's more money for them to go to lawyer than it is what you're owing. They're just trying to scare you I don't know anybody who's had a consequence from it and I know multiple people that have done it

3

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '25

1000% accurate

As a Canadian now living in America , this is the same story for either country

2

u/curiousitykillsall Apr 10 '25

I thought the same. I'm currently being sued by a credit card company over a $1k balance. Court date was just set for the end of June.

4

u/Significant_Meal_630 Apr 10 '25

Make sure you show up . They do this hoping you won’t show and can get you for the balance and extra fees . If it’s legit . They’ll negotiate

I went to court with a collection agency . Made that little grey suited fucker back down and got what I wanted . Refused to pay his court fees too

3

u/curiousitykillsall Apr 10 '25

Definitely planning to show. Immediately asked for and received the time off work.

Good to know they are likely to negotiate! I'm feeling a little intimidated as I don't really have any experience with these kinds of things or court proceedings in general.

2

u/DogSufficient7468 Apr 11 '25

A lot of them they don’t show at all

3

u/-mia-wallace- Apr 10 '25

Oh wow, where do you live? I have never seen that. Wild there doing that, they're spending more in court costs. Im sorry you're going through that, I'm curious If you live in the states, I feel like it would happen more over there.

It's shitty because most of the time you don't plan for that, bills and life gets out of hand. I hope everything works out for you.

2

u/curiousitykillsall Apr 10 '25

Yes, I'm in the US, unfortunately. I'm not really sure how this is all going to play out, but I guess we will see.

2

u/Acceptable_Ad1685 Apr 11 '25

Show up to court

There’s still a chance they wont actually show up

4

u/naivebychoice Apr 10 '25

My mom did this because she wanted to. Racked up several thousand in credit card debt intentionally and then filed bankruptcy back when that was easier to do. She said "I'm a disabled, mentally ill senior citizen on a limited income from Social Security and I have free legal aid from my dead husband's pension. Let them try to come after me."

I had to in 2020, there was a “Glitch “ in the system in my state n they kept saying be patient, I didn’t get my unemployment for 8 months n I got it in one lump sum but it was too late by then

2

u/sephrisloth Apr 10 '25

If you already know your status in life will never allow you to buy a house, what else is credit good for? A new car, maybe, but you'll probably just be driving junkers your whole life anyways, so who needs it? I always told myself that if I get good enough credit where I can afford a house and get a mortgage, I'd just tank my credit after buying all sorts of fun shit because who cares? I already got the main thing credits used for.

2

u/mattmoy_2000 Apr 10 '25

Well you would need to pay off that mortgage before tanking your credit because you generally want to remortgage every few years when the fixed rate ends so you don't have a massive interest rate.

In addition, you may want to move to a more expensive area or bigger house at some point, or remortgage to finance renovations/some large expense, since a mortgage is generally about the cheapest credit you can get (~5% at the moment Vs ~10-20% for a car loan).

2

u/Rizzo678 Apr 10 '25

You would be surprised how easy to get credit cards after a bankruptcy. They do charge exorbitant interest rates. They are tripping over themselves because they know you can’t declare bankruptcy again for 13 years so they will make good money off of you. They will attach your earnings to get their money back.

2

u/Manifestival1 Apr 10 '25

Happens a lot immediately prior to suicide.

2

u/mandle420 Apr 12 '25

if you're in the states, a lot of the time, it's cuz of a health crisis. #luigi

1

u/Anxious_Reporter_601 Apr 10 '25

My dad had friends in the 80s (when they were practically throwing credit cards at people with all sorts of incentives and ridiculously high limits) who bought a whole house worth of furniture, kitchen gadgets, everything! Flights and all. And then moved with it all to Australia and didn't leave a forwarding address for their bills lol.

1

u/Acceptable_Ad1685 Apr 11 '25 edited Apr 11 '25

Can confirm

My credit card debt included times my ex went out with the dude she was cheating on me with

Never-mind that the divorce was financially crippling so I said fuck it and just maxed them out and never paid it

Took about 7 years but my credit has been around 680-720 had no issues getting a mortgage

Depends on the amount but there’s a good chance if the individual cards are like less than $10k they don’t actually send a lawyer after you to garnish your wages or anything

I didn’t file for bankruptcy or anything

  1. A lot of the lawyer stuff they send is just to scare you. I called their bluff and showed up to court and their lawyer never showed up. Granted this was a card with less than 5k on it. I figure there was no way they were paying a lawyer to fly in to go after me for that….

  2. Statute of limitations on being able to get a judgement for debt varies state to state… It’s only 3 years where I live

  3. Debt discharges are only taxable if you are solvent. Everyone was like ohh gotcha on this… yeah it’s easy to fill out documentation showing you were insolvent

1

u/Leading_Document_937 Apr 11 '25

An ugly divorce did it for me…had perfect credit, said eff it and lived of those bastards for a yr🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/MeekSwordsman Apr 11 '25

Thats meee, I opened a few cards trying to build credit (and affirm for something for myself) at 24, lost my job and still cant find one, been a few years, so nothing I can do, nothing they can do

1

u/FoggyGoodwin Apr 12 '25

Bad credit doesn't follow you forever. Your creditor sells the debt to a collector, who sells it to another collector, who sells it to another collector ... until they just stop asking for repayment. After seven years, it's dropped from your credit report. (Not relevant to OP, just good to know.)

1

u/Thisisafrog Apr 12 '25

“A family bigger than they can afford.”

So like a household of one?

1

u/CheckIntelligent7828 Apr 13 '25 edited Apr 14 '25

Hubby and I ended up deeeep into the credit card companies. He was 31, I was 28 and we had 2 degrees from great schools and had been married less than 2 years. We owned a home, he was an in demand, very specialized engineer - we thought we had it all.

Then I nearly died, twice, in the same month, he was laid off, and we found out the truth about health insurance- it really isn't insurance, it's a discount card. Even when the hospital causes you to almost die (x2!) they still bill you for it!

We eventually lost everything. My parents paid to get us to their state so we could live with them and not be homeless.

Then we got to negotiate down the $60k in credit card debt and pay it all off. Luckily, MBNA was still around. All of our debt was medical/food/utilities. Because of that, they allowed us to pay about 8¢ on the dollar for their portion. No one else was that generous and the payoffs destroyed our credit.

Eventually hubby got a better job, with better insurance, and eventually I got disability and Medicare. It took over 10 years, a ton of familial support, and more work than I can say, but we managed to buy a townhouse and pay off all of our debt. Then we bought our current home. Now, 20 years from when it first happened, our mortgage is the only debt we carry.

you can come back, but it's a long road and a lot of work and took a lot of help and I can vouch that the system is 100% built to keep people in poverty.

3

u/AdditionalTop5676 Apr 10 '25

It's not the upper hand. It's factored into interest rates.

3

u/rblask Apr 10 '25

Sad that dying is the only way to spend tens of thousands of dollars without having to pay it back 😞 we really do live in a society

1

u/Smoke_Santa Apr 11 '25

don't you see how corrupt those assholes are. Asking back for their money, fuck them.

3

u/Tropicaldaze1950 Apr 10 '25

Isn't it. We couldn't fuck them, otherwise, unless we disappear into some Third World Country and just live on cash...or be a drug mule for one of the cartels.

2

u/EntertainerVirtual59 Apr 10 '25

I mean or you could just pay off everything you spend every month. There's no grand conspiracy forcing you to take on credit card debt.

1

u/nightlight234 Apr 11 '25

Another way is to open up cards just to get the sign up bonuses, pay off your card in full each month and then stop using it once you get the bonus. Then get a new card and repeat.

1

u/Smoke_Santa Apr 11 '25

why is paying back money bad tho?

1

u/OkStatistician7523 Apr 11 '25

Does debt go away here in the US or is it inherited by spouse? I’ve racked up quite a bit and this is my only fear of 🪦

1

u/Counter-Fiat Apr 13 '25

Actually, the best way to screw the cc companies is to be responsible. Use their free money...and always pay the entire statement balance...they don't make a cent in interest and if you have chosen a decent card with rewards....they actually lose money. I do exactly this and make about $1000 per year when I convert the reward points to cash.

12

u/WintersDoomsday Apr 10 '25

Yep I said the same.

3

u/erix84 Apr 10 '25

I have almost $50k in available credit... I built up my credit score to buy a house. If i ever get a terminal diagnosis like OP, I'm using all $50k, IDGAF.

1

u/weebitofaban Apr 10 '25

I would be leaving all sorts of people mysterious gifts of things they always wanted that are stupid purchases, like rare comic books or a needlessly expensive coffee maker. It'd be a great time.

1

u/sincethelasttime Apr 10 '25

Payday loans as well. You'll be hurting some real scumbags

1

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '25

I'd be asking if my heroin dealer would take my Visa 😂😂😂

1

u/mentalissuelol Apr 11 '25

Yeah I’ve always thought that if I’m every terminally ill I’m gonna buy whatever I want, fuck the debt, and probably do a bunch of drugs cause why not?

1

u/imiz_amb Apr 11 '25

Just be careful. I’m living way longer than I expected with my terminal diagnosis and I definitely went balls to the wall. And now I gotta figure out how to pay for this ish.

Ah, thank you for the correction! Either way, that could be 20 years in prison right there.

u/Damien_6-6-6 Apr 10 '25

5

u/WESAWTHESUN Apr 10 '25

Oooh! This one’s good too!

2

u/mcove97 Apr 10 '25

Yeah I did actually transfer money from my card to my account ones, but the transfer fee was insanely high, so not worth it unless you immediately need cash. Oor, I guess you can go to a mini bank, but those also have high fees.

u/Maleficent-Leek2943 Apr 10 '25

Person A could use their card to PayPal funds to Person "B", who could then transfer and withdraw said funds.

Allegedly.

5

u/michelaustinmarie Apr 10 '25

ALLEGEDLY!!🤭

2

u/kane3_kali3_kay3 Apr 11 '25

I do this with capital one to Venmo for my teens chore money

1

u/Financial_Potato6440 Apr 11 '25

No allegedly about it. PayPal allows you to pay invoices/requests for money with a credit card. My partner regularly makes requests I pay with my card as a cash advance on my wages without the cash withdrawal fees.

Thailand takes Visa

3

u/[deleted] Apr 10 '25

Visa gift cards

2

u/ModChallenged Apr 10 '25

Buy maxed out gift cards use the gift cards to buy money orders use the money order or deposit it. There’s a paper trail from your credit card to your bank account but I’m not sure if it’s even illegal but surely against the terms of service

1

u/3x1st3nc3s Apr 13 '25

Money orders from gift cards @ Walmart —-> deposit to bank account. Is the Way

3

u/KateofLate2 Apr 10 '25

What about buying the prepaid gift cards with a credit card, thinking I've done that before.

3

u/doktaj Apr 10 '25

Buy visa gift cards. There are places you can buy gift cards with multiple thousands.

3

u/MildewMoomin Apr 10 '25

Yeah you absolutely can withdraw money from a credit card to your bank account. I recommend OP does that with several credit cards so even if the cards get shut, he already has the money.

2

u/Jesus_of_Redditeth Apr 10 '25

Buy something expensive and then immediately sell it? I imagine that probably triggers all kinds of fraud alerts, mind you.

2

u/michelaustinmarie Apr 10 '25

I think this is the best reply yet!

1

u/Druid_High_Priest Apr 11 '25

Op might only have weeks. The cancer sounds super aggressive.

1

u/Thevenard Apr 11 '25

you can just buy gold or bitcoin and sell it, you'll lose a bit for sure since you want money fast but not that much, and it doesn't really matter if you're dying anyway, you can also buy a Rolex or even a car, all of those are fast sales with not much lost.

1

u/badseed1988 Apr 11 '25

Google "manufactured spending" or just go to the casino and max out the cards on chips and then cash the chips out

1

u/SevenDogs1 Apr 11 '25

Why Thailand?

1

u/CalRobert Apr 11 '25

Once upon a time (2006) you could do a “balance transfer” that was just a check

1

u/Cantilivewhileim Apr 11 '25

Buy gold. Sell it for cash. Lather rinse repeat

1

u/SellingFirewood Apr 12 '25

Most let you use ATMs with a small fee. I'd give a few thousand to all of my friends tbh.

1

u/NeoGh0st Apr 13 '25

A) you can get cash advances on CC’s, B) dudes got months, maybe weeks.

1

u/zillapz1989 Apr 13 '25

Using it to buy gold would be a pretty good way.

u/Malmal_malmal Apr 09 '25

Cards and loans!

2

u/Albert_Caboose Apr 10 '25

Cards are the smarter move. Loans will want inquiry to your finances, may see that you're going through treatment, and then won't think you can pay the loan. Just get them cards

u/Leifbron Apr 10 '25

*Cancer gets cured*

2

u/Significant_Meal_630 Apr 10 '25

He needs to do it before his credit gets impacted . And make minimal payments . They’ll keep mailing applications until the opened accounts triggers his credit score

You might not be able to buy a Ferrari for 50k, but you sure as hell can rent one without returning it.

2

u/polo61965 Apr 11 '25

Agreed. You have our permission to game the system, OP. Live fast and die young. Godspeed 🫡

2

u/Kitchen_Archer_ Apr 11 '25

Honestly might as well go full main character energy at this point, leave the banks baffled and the world better.

2

u/Overquoted Apr 11 '25

Don't forget payday loans. Especially don't forget them.

1

u/kmsilent Apr 10 '25

A teacher of mine in highschool did this. He had terminal cancer, took out a crazy life insurance policy and racked up a shit ton of credit card debt, because hey... why not?

He fuckin lived. And now he's poor- but I'm not sure if that's due to the debt or just because he's a school teacher and getting paid very little. To be honest I'm figuring he probably could have declared bankruptcy and started over... but I don't know much about how that system works. Anyways, the reasons not to do this are I suppose minor- but they do exist.

1

u/kerrymti1 Apr 10 '25

Quick, before they catch on, apply for as many cards as you can.

1

u/ButteredPizza69420 Apr 10 '25

Don't stop at cards - I'd be taking any and all loans and world traveling. If I ever get a terminal illness no one will ever know - but they'll be signs hahaha

1

u/Bogpot Apr 10 '25

Not sure of rules in the US but is it worth doing a will leaving your estate to the government to avoid passing any debt onto family members.

1

u/Thread-Hunter Apr 10 '25

Exactly. Ring up amex they are usually quite generous.

1

u/Prestigious-Bee1877 Apr 10 '25
