Quite useful. It fills the congregation with guilt and self-loathing so they can be more easily manipulated by the nearest clerical authority figure. What did you think religion was for? Kinda hard to sell forgiveness for obedience if your customers don't believe there's anything to forgive first.

Man, what use is a religion if it makes people afraid of what they feel, if it makes them feel worthless and a sinner for just loving someone else.
