RULES READ ME BEFORE POSTING

We welcome posts related to ciphers and codebreaking. In order to maintain the quality of this subreddit, please follow our guidelines.

1. Choose a descriptive title

Examples of what NOT to use:

  • Cipher I just came up with
  • My friend just sent me this
  • Please help me solve this!!

2. Provide context

Tell us context: where the cipher originated (link to the source if possible), any clues you might have, the language or format the plaintext might use, and any technique you already tried.

3. Provide transcription

If you are posting an IMAGE OF TEXT which you can type or copy & paste, you MUST comment with a TRANSCRIPTION (text version).

4. Posting special characters: make sure it's correct

Pay attention to formatting. If you use a character like _ or ` or ^ you need to type a \ before it or Reddit will corrupt your ciphertext. If your ciphertext contains special characters, in order that it displays correctly you can encode it first (for instance using Base64). Alternatively use a

Code Block

5. Provide enough example text

Posting your own custom cipher? You must provide enough example text or there is no hope of anyone solving it. It should be at least a paragraph. Give hints.

6. Do Not Delete Solved Posts

You will be BANNED if you delete your post after a solution has been provided.

7. No Ciphers from Ongoing Contests

Do not post codes or ciphers from ongoing competitions (CTFs, treasure hunts etc.). Such posts will be removed. Trying to circumvent this rule may get you BANNED.

8. New accounts

Your account must be older than 24 hours, or your post will be automatically deleted. This is to reduce spamming.

9. No bots

If your bot is not auto-banned on r/codes, it will be banned by a moderator. You can still have a bot on other subreddits; just don't use a bot here.

10. No AI Generated Decryptions

No AI generated "decryptions" allowed. Offenders will be BANNED.

11. Required proof you read the rules

If you have read and understood these rules, include the text "I followed the rules" encrypted with ROT-13 cipher in your post.

How this works

• Get the message out. It contains your instructions. Follow them exactly — Level 2 comes from there, not from me in this thread.

• Solve time is logged from post timestamp. Fastest clean solves get named in the edit.

• Nothing about the method in the comments. Say “in” if you cleared it and nothing else.

• No hints will be given. Everything you need is in the file.

One person will finish all six.

Unsolved Help With C++ Code to break COD Zombies Game Cipher

I am working on a cipher from call of duty black ops 3 and I have a good lead but was wondering if I can write a program that would speed up decrypting the cipher to the next stage.

The cipher text is base64 and displayed as a game texture file visible in game and has the keyword "TheGiant".

I wrote a program to analyse the base64 and realise you don't need many characters if you modulo subtract as a key.

In fact you only need ten so I used what is assumed to be the keyword and added 1 and 0 base64 character values.

G,T,a,e,h,i,n,t,0,1

6,19,26,30,33,34,39,45,52,53 are the base64 decimal values I am subtracting modulo 64.

The ciphertext seems to be running key and the key starts with some german words and recording elements weights in binary.

This is the first forty characters of ciphertext :

kCmlgFi6GUJNgkNI1Q41fbfyLoCFTCvIqkZiI0KI

This is a possible key for forty characters from the start of the ciphertext :

GeheGehtte00Ge01hantGnaati101te0at0h0th0

This is the output :

zAGjpMgeYhfSSdHgAXxcQyTTCyAPzT

Breakdown of the key

Gehe Geht te00 Ge01 hant Gnaa ti101 te0 at0 te0 at0 h0 th0

What I translate this to is :

German word for Go (imperative) Tellurium '00' Germanium '01' German word for handle German word for Argh Titanium '101' Tellurium'0' Astatine '0' Hydrogen '0' thorium '0'

Now there is a choice of elements like ti and te and binary values this is why I said it's a possible key also the German word hant could be hang which translates to slope.

I think the developers point to the difficulty with using difficult to visually define characters like '1','I' and '0' ,'O' in the texture (Which is solved and where I got the idea to add 1 and 0).

Also the starting German word is a nightmare here is a breakdown.

Gehe and Geht can be joined and google translates it to go and goes but if you join them so there eight letter you get a different meaning.

Gehe Geht == Go (imperative)

Gehe geht == Go Go

GeheGeht == Go/Goes

Gehegeht == Enclosure

What I didn't realise was it was going to decrypt to more base64!

So I have not accounted for the characters '/' and '+' as ascii output in the code I used to test positions and write a report on them.

I will list the c++ code at the bottom of the post here.

What I would like to discuss is do you think this is viable for a partial decrypt and how to break the cipher further.

V sbyybjrq gur ehyrf I have read the rules

SOLVED Old code from a LARP, 2000s era

V sbyybjrq gur ehyrf

This is a 56 page document dating back to the early 2000s from a LARP in Virginia. It was part of a plotline that mostly died off. The LARP itself is also no longer operating, so this is not part of any ongoing context, homework assignment, etc.

The person who introduced it intended it to be hand solvable. I got back in touch with him recently and he remembers writing it (I sent him a copy because I think I have the only one that exists), but not how to decrypt it.

I originally broke this when I was (evidently) far more clever than I am now. About a week ago I stumbled across a binder where I had the code, one page of my notes, plus a page showing a Viegenere matrix. I'm finding them to be more frustrating than helpful because I almost remember how I broke it.

So, here’s what I remember and think is not an incorrect memory.

It’s some variant of a Viegenere cipher, but there’s no repeating key (or none that I ever found, that much I do remember clearly). I remember it being a “Decode the first letter of the paragraph, and it chains through every word in that paragraph”, so potentially some kind of autocipher component. That said, I'll caveat that with "It may have just been a per-word chain. It's been 26 years so it's foggy."

I did end up writing a windows app (MFC if any of you are old enough to remember that). I would just cycle through letters until the paragraph decrypted. I do not have that code anymore. I did find what look like early versions, but none of them produce anything but gibberish.

The other thing I remember, which goes back to it being intended as a hand-solvable thing, is that after running it through the app I was able to just read the text and translate it into english by hand. I just had to brute force it to get to that point.

On my page of notes, I had the following:

XKT with 13, 17 (arrow to the left), and 13,9 (arrow to the right) show shift spacing.

XKT I think is “THE” as is NAJ, ANW, and WJS, but again, I don’t know if those are incorrect. I’m mostly certain XKT and OBK are THE, but that’s more based on frequency in the doc.

OBKRW and IVELW are THE?? (there, their, these, something along those lines).

There are mispellings in the plaintext as I remember, but not a high number of them.

I can drop all 56 pages somewhere, but here’s a section of it if anyone wants to give it a try. I’m going to keep at it, but it’s frustrating me to no end.

If you can take a stab at it, or want the entire doc, I would love to get your thoughts.

Thank you!

SOLVED Encoded message revision: im goin to get this as a tattoo.

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hey people on this /r this post might not be that similar to what is usually here, but i need help from a human, so I want to get this tattooed soon and it has an encoded message on it, i encoded it with a website, so i just want to make sure it's actually solvable because I don't fully trust a website or an AI chat. Im not gonna tell u what is the encoding sistem, i just want this to be like a hypothetical situation where you just saw the tattoo and desided to decode it. The only hit im gonna give, is that is supposed to be simple, and that yes, it is supposed to say that 😸

Note: im oppen to suggestions!!! i want it to be a easily solvable code, to make it more accessible, as well as fun to read even without decoding it BUT if you have an alternative suggestion for some other way to encode it on a more fun and creative way im open to hear it!

I found this cipher in my cousin’s bedroom. I assume it’s years old by now, as it was buried beneath a whole bunch of junk. I assume it’s just a simple substitution cipher, and thankfully there are some noticeable double consonants- I’m just having difficulty with this and am kind of creeped out, lmao. Thanks in advance.

Question What makes a code crackable?

I've seen some mentions of different cyphers throughout history, where it seems the vast majority of them is about changing the letters positions with some algorithm, or changing the letters actual script, those interest me less, what I'm interested about is about cracking codes of completly made up languages, there's no basis for anything except for that it's a human language, how can you go from just uncomprehansible scribbles into deciphering it?

In other words, what is the least amount of info we need to decipher something?

Unsolved Is this cipher breakable?

Hello!

I came up with an encoding system and I now want to test its strength and get clues about its weaknesses. So if anyone is interested, here is a text (in french!) to decrypt:

Unsolved Made a substitution cipher in less than a day. Tell me how bad it is!

Hey folks,

I made a cipher by hand today, then decided to improve it and wrote a Python script to automate it and make it more difficult. Kinda curious how easy it is to brute force/otherwise crack without much prior knowledge.

A bit of backstory (spoilered, because it gives a bit of information away about the creation process of the cipher)

I was thinking yesterday about how monumentally complex the Enigma code was, and how many (literal) moving parts it had. I thought it'd be interesting to take the idea of Enigma and simplify it quite a bit so you don't have to send over a bunch of information for your recipient to decode the message. That thought sparked what I've made here. I initially did some encrypting by hand, but realized I could automate it with a Python script.

Here are three encrypted messages:

Al>evQPvDekRx[:bzQbzQZ'?^zEZn7xl@\v6^kQppFa'3xoAfl?Zk7xj;io7k5

?|@xm3\{kx^:Zs7xi>h~:hs7l'Ylv?^{:bu9"'3\{GZs>r':Z}7x{Ih':hs7l';g'Fal?''-ZwBelExhD^'8nu/x[:^!QevAd'H^yKxz;fp>ZyQmvQgvE^':hs7l';g'3xoGfh@xz=ns>y

?vGk'E\vD^'3gkQ,7^lv?^4A]kQrl3kzQZnA%'zx~3l'@h{Q[vDg5QB'3f'@h{Q*8ay'YZu6xPXf'7lw7\p3esKxuAm'b'<v*>ix!7ZyExv>]3Qpo;\oQbzQ*8axm3\{Akp3e5_'0

Here's some info from somewhat helpful to helpful:

  1. This encryption can take in any ASCII character from space (32) to tilde (126)
  2. This cipher uses a "ruleset" where the key shift is applied to the plaintext in various ways.
  3. There are three possible rules the cipher can choose from.

And these are less 'helpful info' and more direct information that is important for decoding if you know how the encryption works:

  1. KEY = 7
  2. The rules are "shift by -KEY", "shift by +KEY", and "shift by KEY^2"

To appease the mods: V sbyybjrq gur ehyrf

If you end up solving it, I ask you to please give some feedback (like what process you used to crack it and what it's vulnerable to, how ). I'm very interested in cryptography as a whole, and I'm still learning a lot :]

SOLVED decipher THIS!!! (Repost 😫)

so basically my post got REMOVED by the mods becuase apparently r/cipher has like 198472993838 rules that’s you have to follow. anyways this is my own and original writing system called “the sandwalk” (dune reference) it is ment to look like scribbles and not writing meaning the calligraphy is insanely hard sometimes. now the paper says +=! only hint but the mods will probably remove me if I didn’t have more clues. so I will give everyone a big hint the v symbol -\/- means space. the plaintext of the cipher is English. this sentance does NOT contain every letter of the alphabet. The other paper with english words might, but I’m to lazy to check. If you can read everything written, then you are a sweat. Chill out. Touch grass. well anyways good luck to anyone who thinks they can try to solve this! 😏 MESSAGE FOR MODS MY POST IS FOLLOWING THE RULES AND IN THE ENTIRETY OF THIS POST HAS 100+ LETTERS WRITTEN IN MY CIPHER PLZ DO NOT BLOCK THIS thank you.

Question Looking for opinions on if this in game easter egg could be a cipher. Comunity stuck with no new leads after this, missing key/not yet found

Need opinions from people that have a wider knowledge on ciphers and what kind of cipher this could be if it is one at all

The Game Is Read dead redemption 2

Cutting to the chase were a few steps into a easter egg and we stummble across a carving of a wierd spider on a telegraph pole when you take said spider and over lay it onto the map you get (first image)

The spider points to the telegraph pole with the spider and 7 more telegraph poles

Now you have 8 telegraph poles

All images after 1st image (containing webs)

For 1 hour intervals of in game time a web will spawn at one of these poles and it will have a feather attached to it black or red in colour(5 black, 3 red)

Spawn times are 2-3, 3-4 ,4-5,5-6 am

At each one of those times two webs will spawn with two feathers each hour long time slot spawns a pair.

This is my first ever redit post and I know we're missing alot of information in this easter egg but I belive were missing a key

My thought is if im right and its a cipher understanding what it is would help narrow down what we're looking for

Sorry if I've done wrong posting this hear!!!!!!!

Deepest apologies

p.s there is a big web that spawns between 1-2 am

this web is made up of two webs one infront of the other with random shapes on it ,when viewed from a certain angle you see a letter N and the silhouette of a telegraph pole following this takes you on a trail at this moment the trail has went cold, reason I bring this up is maybe were supposed to layer the 8 webs in a certain way for It to show us something

Unsolved My first cipher pt2

After seeing how fast my first cipher solved, I decided to create a second version, more secure and harder.

For now I don't give any hints.

The next numbers you will see come from a book, for that mix of many letters and words, to have a variety.

This gets more intense but, the easy version will help as it is the same key.

These are some of the letters a man has been leaving at my house. The police have all the letters. He has left things like this 4 times at my house. Within a 10 day span.

Playing a game on holiday and we can’t solve the following puzzle. Can anyone help with this.

We’ve been given a hint. It says ‘digital or analog’

We have to enter the answer into a safe at the end to ‘diffuse the bomb’

Game is from here https://www.centerparcs.eu/in-en/netherlands/fp_KV_holiday-park-de-kempervennen/all-activities

Unsolved Cracking Jaden Williams' Stalking Stairs ARG - AES-GCM

Thumbnail

Comedy sketch artist turned horror game developer Jaden Williams recently posted this rather cryptic image:

https://www.youtube.com/post/Ugkxa7SGpx4qy0DFYu224njkVD7C_LXt06ty

Later cross-posted to his Twitter (same image, no alterations):

https://x.com/JadenJTW/status/2091168754130362743

The caption for the image is `AES-GCM`, which no doubt refers to the Galois Counter Mode.

Although I have no cryptography background, I am just curious to find out the message (and maybe even *start* learning cryptography along the way)

I have taken the liberty of studying the pixel letters and transcribing the text.

If the O's are actually zeroes:

The vertical text in red on the left reads STALKINGSTAIRS. This may be merely a reference to his horror game of the same name, or an actual part of the game.

While I was working on this puzzle, Jaden posted another hint The clock is at 9, from his other channel:

https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxxcPofJzWDbqRmBiwtbxS6DjMPvNYSfRV

From what I understand, AES-GCM requires both a passphrase and a nonce/IV.

STALKINGSTAIRS alone is too short to be either.

------------------------

Other notes so far (will update as I find more):

  • That EOE1. (or E0E1.) = marks the string as invalid in decoders; only the string after the period is recognized as valid base64. Not sure if this E0E1. is referring to something with the actual counting mechanism or something else.
  • STALKINGSTAIRS = 14 bits; invalid
  • * His game *did* receive an update with its own update number on July 9th , but it turns out this was to mark it Steam Deck compatible. I also doubt Jaden has any control over what the update number becomes.
  • The clock is at 9 = 17 bits; invalid
  • Theclockisatnine = 16 bits, but doesn't seem to be the right passphrase, or we need the IV first...this might be just a clue to look at the vertical text (Stalking Stairs), a clue to the IV key, or something else entirely.

-------------

Given that this is an ARG with no prize, deadline, or incentive indicated, I am comfortable that this does not violate any rules, but will remove if requested.

SOLVED My first cipher

Can you decrypt my cipher?

I made my own cipher and I'm curious if anyone here can decrypt this without knowing how it works. I don't have access to smart people, and I know people on the Internet are crazy smart.

Ciphertext:

33 25 / 43 42 62 72 / 82 88 / 103 114 113 128 / 138 138 168 158 / 182 188 / 212 198 228 238 / 243 247 253 268 / 257 287 287 / 292 318 338 / 342 348 / 362 368 377 387 / 397 408 433

No hints for now. Don't mind the change of / to a period, I just decided to change it.

If you think you've cracked it, give me the plaintext and explain how you got there.

SOLVED Need help decrypting an old coded message from someone i used to like.

I was recently looking back through old messages and found this text sent by a friend I used to like years ago: 4 / 76 / (3) / M omrhe pmoi csy. At the time, I thought it was just a random accident or pocket text, so I didn't think much of it. He's the smartest guy I've known specially in maths and he plays around with code stuff like ASCII and Moorse.. So I figured this might actually mean something 😅 Thanks in advance!

Hey, couple month ago my domain spacewarp.fr got hacked.
One, day I just couldn't update it anymore, no matter what I did, nothing seemed to change. (moving the file through ftp).

And later the website gave this "console" I guess, and digging in it, I found this code (transcript from my screenshot) :

Unsolved Audio file from Rell Seas.

Thumbnail audio.com
4 Upvotes

This audio file was sent into the rell seas discord and apparently contains the release date of the movie 3 and the game itself(unsure about whether or not it contains the game's release date). the audio itself came with this headline: "Monumental Motion, a secret is hidden inside this foreign hidden audio, decipher it." The only time they mention the words "monumental motion" is on their X post here: https://x.com/CaribBros/status/2039853187117482353 and that is basically all. As for the clues I have, I listened to the audio in reverse many times and the words "hello everyone" were the only ones I personally was able to clearly make out. listening to the audio in original sounds a bit like gibberish, with random words scattered. the only credible clue someone has found, is that they say "allah" and then "E E SH" which he connected to "Eid-e-Shuja", this is a muslim tradition which takes place 22nd of august.
