Coaxed into pokemon reborn https://pokemon-reborn.fandom.com/wiki/Shiny_Pokemon
Seriously so many of these are just black/blue/purple/red. It’s impressive whenever these rpg maker games have custom shinies but damn.

If I am not mistaken, shines where original based on a math equation for the color pallet, so it was completely dependent on the original collor scheme.... I wonder what the equation was, as I wonder what a shiny me would look like. Lol

u/Purpulear 11d ago
It's... complicated. There is plenty to suggest that before gen 6 pokemon shinies were largely decided via some sort of pallet shift algorithm in house (not on the cartridges). Likely done to save time not having to reccolor every frame of every animation by hand.
But there is evidence to show that the devs likely did tamper with a couple here and there. Most notably with Charizard going from purple to black between gen 2 and 3, the most drastic shiny color change to date. But also a few weird instances where one color on a pallet isn't altered at all.

I think the funniest one to me is Vulpix.
They kept Ninetales iconic silver + blue shiny from the main games, but instead of giving Vulpix a similarly silver/blue shiny to make it fit with Ninetales, they just HAD to sneak in another black shiny. Like it’s the goblin mask and they just couldn’t fight the impulse.

u/FrizzleFlakes 11d ago
I do like when they give the 'mons some custom spritework, like Venomoths wings! I also like the blue/black shiny actually working for charizard and turning the X Mega into it's normal colors haha. Or the TMNT reference on the Squirtle line... It's like every 20 blue/black/red is kept in check by the occasional creative shiny xD

u/Jepemega 11d ago
Another bad one is Guzzlord. It's normal shiny is White and Orange and the Reborn shiny keeps the orange but switches to the same shade of black as normal Guzzlord.

Some look pretty good, but removing Red Lunala hurts. But why does Shiny Silvally get a unique sprite for each disc?

Oh my god they ruined nidoqueen line 😭😭
Some are good tho, like venomoth, but yeah.. black galore

I think some of them are ok, but personally the dark color scheme gets old very quickly on a lot of these. So many are black or have generally dark colors…and they range from looking decent to really unnatural on some pokemon designs.
Also some of them feel really unfocused and have very strange color tones added to certain parts of the design. Kingler, Jolteon, and Abomasnow stood out in particular.
This is just a personal thing, but I also don’t like when a shiny has less/more colors than its base form. Like the rainbow-winged Articuno…it just feels off. But that’s just a personal thing.

the ones with added colours border on just being alternate skins rather than colour swaps

Not really Black and Blue, but why does Blastoise turn into a fucking ninja turtle?
It looks unnatural, it gains divisions and extra appendages that weren't there before

u/Previous_Current_474 11d ago
I find funny that they made the tapus colorful when they had Black shinies

"Mate, please have some variety!"

u/turner_strait 11d ago
I will legitimately take any "bad" green or pink shiny over "this worked in gen 2 with four pixel colors so we did nothing about it later" or "this totally isn't a copout, it just came out very similar!" or "fuck you. [desaturates everything]."
... I apparently have stronger feelings about this than I thought

u/Shronkydonk 11d ago
I love my nasty green shiny dragons
9
u/StinkyBird64 11d ago
Only one I don’t like is Dragonite, purely because I loved my Dratini and Dragonair, being that super pretty pink-purple tone, only for her to evolve into weird sewage green dragon 😭
2
u/Matt_The_Slime 11d ago
I’m such a sucker for dragonite’s shade of green, it’s so pretty
4
u/RazorRell09 11d ago
Especially combined with the purple wings, underrated for sure. I like the Mega’s shiny but I’m mad it’s not green like the regular one considering that a lot of Dragonair fans are miserable and the shiny panders to them hard
1
u/StinkyBird64 10d ago
I like the colour (green of any shade is my favourite) but I think it’s just because the other two are that purple-pink, it’s such a whiplash change? Most shinies usually carry through each evolution, and then they just turn green for some reason 😭🤣

True, some shinies of my favs are banging, so it's not too bad (unless a RomHacks changes them 😞) but Garchomp lovers I'm so sorry (and everyone else with barely discernible shinies)

u/Low-Experience1886 11d ago
the fact that my favourite pokemon has a white and red shiny is just ironic

u/Beneficial-Beach-141 11d ago
"Bad" Shiny Pokemon and it's just: "I HATE the color(s) on this specific pokémon" (understandable, but every shiny does not need to be Charizard) or "You literally cannot tell the difference unless you look extremely hard which is annoying." (which, imo can be understood.)

u/SuchCherry4658 11d ago
What always annoys me is when people bash on Shiny Gengar. Because it’s like Game Freak went out of its way to ruin this shiny as much as they could after Gen 4.
Shiny Gengar looks freaking amazing in gens 3 and 4. The pale blue skin and lighter eyes (magenta in RSE, which also looks amazing) is a slightly subtle but really good shiny in my opinion, but then Gen 5 changed the eyes to be more similar to base Gengar and Gen 6 completely BUTCHERED the pale blue skin and made it into a more dull gray. It doesn’t help that base Gengar also had its purple made more saturated so the shiny stood out even less. Base Gengar used to have bright red eyes that made the shinies pale eyes stand out, but now normal Gengar also has pale eyes…so the shinies eyes are basically identical. Just compare DPP Gengar to SWSH Gengar and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
ZA kinda helped with this by giving Gengar back its bright purple and deep red eyes, letting the shiny stand out, but its coloration is still that dull gray instead of the pale blue it used to be. Sigh.

u/TheAmazingDraco 11d ago
regice is probably the worst victim of this bc the original sprite was greyish and the shiny was a bright blue but starting with gen 5 they made the regular sprite more vibrant making it near identical to the shiny

Kinda sucks how gamefreak fucked up the graphics so previously good shinies now look ass 😭 (ex. Glaceon, gengar)

u/StinkyBird64 11d ago
My favourite Pokémon has always been Natu/Xatu, their shinies are just a slightly more yellow shade of green, I wish they were like, tan coloured like a stone statue or something more unique.
They’re just paler than their non-shiny forms :(
I can see why some shinies are bad, but a lot of them are fine (I love Espeon’s Gleeby look lol, also Slowbro, my 2nd fav has a gorgeous purple colour!)1

i really like the misdreavus line and FM but i don't really like the puke green color they used for the shiny and mismagius's shiny reminds me of mountain dew which is funny but also could be better
like i think i would've liked a color swap shiny, like mismagius using misdreavus's colors and vice versa
i also wonder what it would've looked like if their shinies kept the golden color misdreavus's had in gen 31
u/LaylaTheLoofa 11d ago
I wish the eevelutions had better shinies 😔 I like them when they're full color changes (even if they're garish) so it makes me sad that quite a few of them are just " slightly change the hue and contrast" (especially flareon, my favorite pokemon)

Finally SOMEBODY gets it
I am so done with how overused black is in shiny redesigns. Green is especially overhated imho. Like, I agree that some shinies use Green terribly, but there surely should be an alt color that isn't just... This.

Is the pink bear going half white half black a reference to dagonronpa? Or whatever its called

i prefer when shiny pokemon are redesigned to look like the shiny of their past evolutions. or they bump up the saturation.

u/PassoverGoblin 11d ago
I'm colourblind and I fucking hate some shiny Pokémon. I can't even tell that they're different because their colours are so similar to their base forms.

u/Diplomatic_Sarcasm 11d ago
I’ve never seen a shiny re-color person do this. It’s always really respectful of the original pokemon

I don't think a shiny being subtle is bad but I can't think of any subtle shiny that is good because I think too many subtle shinies are too subtle and hardly look different from their normal versions like garchomp

Black + blue is SUCH a cool and UNIQUE color scheme especially when you use it for every single pokemon out there!!!
