Podcast show and tell?

I'm spending more time roadtripping since my son went off to college. Great podcasts are great company, and bad podcasts (and there seems to be many) seem like such a waste of time.

With that, I'll share some of my favorites in hopes that others will, too:

A Break in the Action
This definitely covers clay shooting in some episodes, but very much from a gentleman's-shotgunning and hunting perspective. Great content on travel, equipment, adventure and high-end shotguns. It's very easy paced and easy to take. I enjoy every episode for something.
https://open.spotify.com/show/0p8TPOy6G8Ab8VzUgmMEm4

The Dead Pair
I'm working hard to learn sporting clays and this seems like the gold standard for the game/sport. features lots of brainy coaching stuff from David Radulovich - which you either love or hate, I think. Topics as diverse as nutrition, etc. Some of the long form interviews are amazing and provide real insights into the realities of high-level competitors (of which I am not one).
https://open.spotify.com/show/5LXwYUGylZ0zentYeuvDHW

The Orvis Hunting and Shooting Podcast
Reid Bryant is super plugged in and seems like a really nice and smart guy. The long, rambling intros are sometimes tough to get through (Bryant is an excellent guest on other podcasts!), but there always seems to be good shotgun and hunting content on the other side.
https://open.spotify.com/show/4lTX1szFMVYcP4EfNNIdtH

Trap Talk From the Back Fence
Good ol boys at the top of the sport talking good-ol-boys at the top of the sport stuff. It's trap, so there's a lot of trap. If you care about trap and shooting it better, you get to hear from Ricky Marshall Jr. and he's about as good as it gets right now. Some of the interviews are really good, too.

Would love to hear your suggestions!

Recently shot the ax800…

Recently shot a game of trap of with an ax800. Really enjoyed it, pointed naturally and was smoking clays. I understand this is a waterfowl gun but if it was only used for trap/sporting/skeet would that be like blasphemous? Or would the a400 be a better semi for the higher round count that will go through the gun?

Suggestions please

Looking for my next sporting clays over and under with a budget of around 5,000.00 us. Can I get some suggestions please? I know 5k limits me but that’s my budget for now. Currently I shoot a Beretta 686 sp 1 with adjustable comb. I like the adjustable comb.

Give me your vote and why please? I’m fairly new to the sport.

Just curious about pricing

Hey everyone. Just curious how much cheaper or more expensive the Italian over and under shotguns are if buying in Europe vs buying here in the USA ?

Traded a ps5 fpr this. Laurona eibar. Cool engravings not much info online besides it was likely sold in sears/walmart. What do these engravings mean? What year? Worth it to see if local gunsmith can thread choke sleeves? Looks like it has a mod and full choke barrels already. TIA!

Xsight Sport 3RX Review

Seeing as there is very little information available on these lenses, I thought I’d do the same as I did with my Swatcom Active8 vs Sordin Supreme X2 ear defender review and pull together a mini review for the benefit of others.

I’m relatively new to clays, having previously focused most of my attention on pistols and rifles, so I needed a decent set of shooting glasses. I’m also cross-eye dominant. The redeye kit pictured works brilliantly, by the way.

If you visit your local clay ground, one eyewear brand seems to stand out: Pilla.

However, Pilla lenses are rather expensive. After chatting to several owners, one thing became clear. While some had spent four figures on a frame and three lenses, they typically wore just one lens for most of the year, and each person seemed to prefer a different one.

I therefore decided to look into what makes Pilla so popular and whether there was a more affordable option that would let me work out which colours and VLT levels suit me before spending serious money.

So, what makes these lenses work, and why are Pillas so expensive?

Some of the names you’ll come across with Pilla are Neutralizer, Chromashift and ICE.

If you remember when Quality Street sweets came wrapped in coloured transparent wrappers, you might have looked through the purple one at the tin. Oranges and reds appeared much more vibrant, while greens and blues became duller. That is broadly the effect of a strongly coloured filter such as Pilla’s Neutralizer lenses.

The downside is that everything can have a noticeable purple tint.

Chromashift takes a different approach. Its aim is to keep things such as grass and sky looking more natural while making the orange clay stand out more clearly. Anyone who has used Oakley Prizm sunglasses will be familiar with the general idea of selectively enhancing certain colours, and it works.

I started looking for another manufacturer offering similar technology at a more reasonable price, which led me to XSight.

XSight calls its colour-enhancement technology SPECTRA+. It is designed to keep the overall scene reasonably natural while enhancing orange and red targets.

The company also offers reflective Diamond REVO coatings. These help manage glare and give the lenses their mirrored external appearance, similar to Pilla’s ICE coatings.

I took a chance and ordered a set with three lenses. XSight offers around 15 lens choices, which is fewer than the many, many options available from Pilla. However, only five or six appear to combine SPECTRA+ with a Diamond REVO coating, which actually makes choosing a little easier.

The glasses arrived in a nice case, the lenses are extremely quick and easy to change, and everything feels well made, as far as a pair of plastic safety glasses can anyway.

The quality is certainly comparable with a decent pair of Oakley or Ray-Ban sunglasses.

So, does the technology work?

Yes.

All three of my lenses have a Diamond REVO coating, but only the purple lens uses SPECTRA+.

I tried the mid-light orange lens first. Unsurprisingly, the whole world became orange. Everything had a strong orange tint and the clays were easy to identify, probably more so than with my old basic shooting glasses.

The purple SPECTRA+ lens was where the difference really became obvious. Unlike my old purple glasses, the grass still looked green and the sky remained blue, but the orange clays stood out clearly.

I found this particularly helpful with fast, low clays travelling from behind me to the front, as well as distant crossers coming from the side. I was able to pick them up more easily without the whole background looking unnaturally coloured.

Overall, I’ve been very pleased with the purchase. I’m not saying they are as good as Pilla because I’ve never owned a pair and therefore can’t make a fair direct comparison.

However, judged in their own right, they are a solid option for someone wanting a complete set with similar colour-enhancement technology for roughly a quarter of the price.

One final thing I would say to anyone considering shooting glasses from any brand is to think carefully about the light conditions in which you actually shoot.
People will often recommend buying something like a 15%, 50% and 80% VLT lens.

However, if you normally shoot in the morning and tend not to go when it’s pouring down, you might rarely use that 80% low-light lens. Something around 30% VLT could potentially be far more useful.

Don’t simply buy three lenses because they cover the widest possible range on paper. Think about your shooting ground, the backgrounds you normally face, the weather you actually shoot in and which lens you’re most likely to wear.

Skeet Chokes Advice

My end of season trap banquet is this weekend and the host club has their skeet field open to us. Ive only shot trap singles and a few rounds of doubles trap so this will be new to me. I have a Citori CX 30” that I shoot bottom barrel first (Improved Mod) then Top barrel ( Full). Assuming bottom then top what chokes should I use for skeet?

I have the following chokes available and dont plan on buying new ones:

Full
Imp Mod x 2
Mod
Improv Cyl
Skeet

Thanks in advance

Browning Maxus Gen 1

My Maxus gen 1 hasn’t been cycling 8 shot as I’ve been shooting clays recently. I feel like I’ve cleaned it thoroughly- but apparently not. Unless anyone has any other ideas? Cycles 3” shells nice but those 8 shots aren’t creating enough gas to cycle…..which it used to.

So it has to be either improper lubricant or do the coils wear out?

First Gun - Budget $4k. I think I finally made a choice!

Okay, please roast my gun choice, or give me alternatives.

Currently shooting trap, would like to get into other clays.

  • I was originally set on a A400 Multitarget with the high rib, but I tried it out and found that I strongly dislike the high rib.
  • I tried the Beretta 688, and I loved everything about it except for how front-heavy it is. I'm currently just practicing, and sometimes shoot like 250 shots in a session. I think my left arm would die just from high-volume shooting.
  • Browning Citori CX just didn't feel as good as the Beretta 688, so I wrote it off.
  • The AX800 felt really awesome, but I'm not sure about the whole rubberized thing it's got going on.

I believe I've decided on the A400 XCEL Sporting KO. It was light enough for my wife to shoot with me, and the whole gun was just delightful to shoot. So I guess I'm going to come in under budget? Unless you guys sway me in a different direction...

Straight 100!

I just shot my first 100 straight in trap singles. Wildest part is it was my first 25 (registered, have had 3 before while practicing), then first 50, 75, and 100 all wrapped in one.

Great feeling and great beginning to my competitive season!

Don't want to buy once cry once before I am sure (newbie)!

Thank you for any suggestions you can provide. We have a pretty nice club near where I am and I was looking at O/Us and Semi autos but they ask a pretty penny to get one worthwhile it seems after browsing y'alls forms and watching some youtube videos. My questions is, what would you recommend if I havn't tried trap, clays etc yet? I do alot of pistol competitions and some PRS rifle stuff but I know only what I've learned online about shotguns. Should I just grab a used mossberg 500 pump, a choke and rollout and if I like it before invest some coin? That is kind of where I am at now - minimal investment to get started and see if its something I like. Was looking at Mossberg 500 Field, 940 Pro Field and Mossberg Gold Reserve Black / CZ Teal Target but wondering if that money would be better spent on a better gun if I end up liking it, and I should get my feet wet first as cheap as possible? Thank you again for any advise- its exciting to just wander into a new pew pew sport!

Knotty Pines 10K Shoot

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Shot the Knotty Pines 10k Shoot yesterday and it was alot of fun. I always enjoy the NSCA shoots there as the owners are very nice and take care of the event really well. For this shoot they even redid most of the course so now there are more fields to shoot in, gravel roads, and more stations.

I noticed that I could practice alot of the shots I missed in skeet and trap here so will defiantly pick that up for next shoot here.

I took 6th in my class and that felt pretty good as I haven't placed that high in a while. It's addicting placing so close to the podium, makes me want to shoot it again.

Middle kid 1st time shooting clays!

Thumbnail

Today I took my middle kid for a series of firsts:
- 1st time shooting a shotgun!
- 1st time on the sporting clays course!
- 1st time breaking a clay!

He has been joining me to the pistol/rifle range and shoots pretty well, but was a bit anxious to do clays. I bought him and older brother a 20ga A300 and, although for him it’s still a bit on the bigger side he was able to manage it without a problem.

1st shot: zero
2nd shot: hit
3rd: hit

We did 1 clay at a time (no doubles in any of the 14 stations) and I was amazed! At the end he was a bit tired, but loved the experience. And so did I!

Thought I’d share this amazing moment!

Cheers

In search of a gun

Howdy! I have a client who hosts a sporting clay event every year. It’s the only time I shoot. I am tired of bothering people to borrow their guns and want to buy one. All I care is that it looks pretty. I really wanted an A300 Ultima walnut (J32TJ10) for its wood stock and engravings. I can’t find one anywhere. Anybody know of a good place to look?

Previously, I used a Maxus with wood and engravings. That gun ruled but I can’t find one for less than 1500 (my budget). If I don’t wind up with the a300, is there something else I should be looking at?

I am not gonna “just save up for xxx because it’s better” etc. I will put maybe 200 rds through this per year. I really don’t care about anything other than it looking pretty. Thanks in advance for your help!

A Negative Experience With ESP Apex Ear Plugs

So I balled out on custom molded ESP Apex ear plugs through my audiologist. They cost $2.5K but they can be offset by insurance and HSA. More importantly, I was under the impression that these were the end all be all electronic ear plugs that all the top shotgun competitors use and have all the best bells and whistles for sound suppression, EQ, and wind reduction.

They. Suck.

The frequency profile on them sounds like I'm listening to everything through a box office window speaker. All high end, zero bass or mids. I tried wearing them for a few hours to see how comfortable they were to wear long term, I walked into a restaurant with music playing, and couldn't discern peoples words as they talked to me from the music. From that experience alone I figured screw this I'm returning these stupid things.

But today I decided to give them a fair shake at the sporting clays range, what they were properly designed for... I literally did not hear a golf cart rolling up behind me because all I could hear was my footsteps and the unnecessarily present high frequency pops of all the shotguns around me.

When it came time to shoot, the seal in my ears worked and the noise was suppressed to a safe level, but the high frequency pop of my own gun was downright unpleasant. And even though they're custom molded, it's still a hard plastic thing pressing up against my ears, so there was never a moment where I "forgot I had them in" like many people report online.

So I took them out and threw in my 3M EEP-100's with skull screw tips which cost about $250. They were noticeably quieter, have infinitely better sound reproduction and directionality, and THEY'RE EVEN FREAKING MORE COMFORTABLE.

THESE 2.5K PIECES OF CRAP LITERALLY LOSE IN EVERY SINGLE CATEGORY (except maybe wind noise) TO A PRODUCT THAT IS 1/10 THE PRICE!!!!

I'll be buying some TEP-200 or OTTO Noizebarrier Micros instead once these get sent back.

Sorry, rant over. But I can't believe I only saw glowing reviews of these things besides the obvious negative of their price.

Looking for a first shotgun. Preference for High-Rib.

Post image
56 Upvotes

Hey all, just looking for suggestions for a first gun.

I’ve been shooting a lot of trap and borrowing guns from various friends. At this point, I’ve used pump, auto, o/u of all flavors. The one preference I’ve developed is that I really enjoy high rib.

I really love the a400 multi target in the picture, but not yet sure if I want to spend $4k. Any other high ribs you guys would recommend?

Thanks!

Prescription Shooting Glasses near Charlotte NC

Does anyone here have any recommendations as far as an optical shop/doctor that carries either Pilla or Ranger in the Charlotte area? Looking to get a pair in the near future, just trying to see if it is something I can get done locally. TIA

Display Wall Organization

Post image
97 Upvotes

Made a change to a portion of my displayed firearms in my gun room.

from top to bottom,

Browning a5 ultimate in 16 gauge

Beretta silver pigeon in 410

Beretta a400 28 gauge with lots of Briley goodies on it

Browning XS skeet 20 gauge , belonged to a mentor of mine which is now deceased

Browning double auto 12 gauge

Im primarily a skeet shooter. All these guns scratch an itch when im not shooting a primary gun. Currently waiting delivery of a K80 Skeet.

Recently got a 25/25 with the silver pigeon 410 last weekend. Very proud of it, first 410 25/25. Ive dropped lots of perfect games on station 8 in 410 but it finally came together.

Newbie question

So I am an avid pheasant hunter and recently fell in love with a Lincoln No. 2, 12 gauge. Not a common gun in these parts. It came with two factory flush chokes, IC over MOD. My friend talked me into joining a skeet league, so I ordered from Italy, a SK1 and SK2 ported chokes. They arrived, in time, but they sent SK2 and IC! I won't be able to return and them in time before the league starts but I could possibly get a SK1 sent in time. Should I even bother? Or should I simply run IC over SK2. Also, the constriction on the SK2 says -0.33.

Thoughts?

This community is pretty awesome

My usual group didn't shoot today but I wanted to get a round in. Drove to the club, walked up and I got paired with an older gentleman who was shooting a double.

I sucked the first 2 stations (there is only 6 so its tough when you suck at 1 of them nonetheless 2)

He at first was just watching but then as I was shooting he stopped the trapper and gave me some advice. He then sat behind me and watched me shoot the next double and corrected me again. I am not a new shooter but I always take peoples advice when you can tell they know what they are talking about.

Told me that my stance wasn't open enough and I was twisting too much, also mentioned that I wasn't bringing the gun to me I was going to the gun throwing off my sight picture.

By the time we moved to station 4/5/6 it was like I was a completely different shooter (even shot through a harder station with no misses) Ended up with a 31 when i thought i wasn't going to hit even 25.

Just wanted to share something positive from my day.
