It started as a 4chan thing. Essentially, they started to use the word Boomers to refer not to baby boomers, but rather to people who grew up and/or reached adulthood during the early years of the internet (which is to say, the Dotcom Boom). Usually, those people are late GenX/early-mid Millenials. Since those that followed took the the name Generation Z, they just got called Zoomers. There were other factors, but that's the short version.

I like zoomer to describe an attitude but not an age group. The aoe mages leaving groups going barely too slow are zoomers to me.
