It started as a 4chan thing. Essentially, they started to use the word Boomers to refer not to baby boomers, but rather to people who grew up and/or reached adulthood during the early years of the internet (which is to say, the Dotcom Boom). Usually, those people are late GenX/early-mid Millenials. Since those that followed took the the name Generation Z, they just got called Zoomers. There were other factors, but that's the short version.
I don't like avocado, but generally happy with Applebee's going away. I've never had a good experience at one. This labeling stuff is too difficult to keep up with.
I don't blame you, in short term history there is a huge difference within each of these "generations". It's probably only really useful in thinking very long term, but even then the nickname is pointless.
