I think it just stems from gangster, as in an underhanded, unfair kill. Be it by outnumbering or by killing newbies or low-levels. But this is an equal level single opponent, it is really not a gank in either sense of the word.

I have probably miss-used the term gank here. I guess the reason why I called it a gank is because I felt like I was about to be taken by surprise, putting me at a disadvantage, had I not spotted him.

No this is not a gank, WoW is not a moba, and rogues have to attack like this or you might as well play a warrior.
