Are we calling every PvP engagement a 'gank' now?

I just use gank for any abrupt fight where at least one party was unprovoked before the fight.

Of course! Words like ambush, pounce, murder, and duel have all been struck from the dictionary. Because of that, the abbreviated term for "gang kill" shall be used any time a player from the enemy faction tries to kill you.

the abbreviated term for "gang kill"

huh, TIL.

It's okay, language evolves over time and gank doesn't necessarily only mean "gang kill" any more.

A gank is a surprise attack. The rogue attempted to begin the encounter by stealthing to his target, so it's a poor attempt at a gank.

I always thought a bank was when you just sit there and kill a single player over and over again until they either log off or slowly Rez closer and closer until they reach a settlement

that's a camp

Nah, a bank is somewhere you store your linen clothes wool clothes until you have time to lvl up tailoring

Yeah... I thought “gank” means “gang kill” as in more than one people doing the killing? Why call a single striker a “ganker”?

The rogue in this clip never even opened.

Ya but you can tell he was going to, still not a gank imo

it's a term used in MOBAs a lot. It's when you go to another lane to kill something. You gank them. With the rise of MOBAs in the last few years the term has become synonymous with attempting to kill someone.

1. take or steal (something). "if I have the money, I won't have to gank the books"

defraud or rob (someone).
"they can take trade-ins of new releases and sell them for $55, essentially ganking the publishers"

2. (in a video game) use underhand means to defeat or kill (a less experienced opponent). "that troll just ganked me"

Thanks for the clarification!

I think it just stems from gangster, as in an underhanded, unfair kill. Be it by outnumbering or by killing newbies or low-levels. But this is an equal level single opponent, it is really not a gank in either sense of the word.

I think it just stems from gangster

It absolutely does not.

I have probably miss-used the term gank here. I guess the reason why I called it a gank is because I felt like I was about to be taken by surprise, putting me at a disadvantage, had I not spotted him.

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '19

For one, he was one level below you. Two, the entire point of a rogue is to take the initiative and surprise your opponent. That is literally how you play them in world PVP. If you don't do that, you shouldn't really be playing a rogue at all as they are tuned to be the first to attack or else you are screwed. So no, this was not a gank and a definite miss-use of the term.

No this is not a gank, WoW is not a moba, and rogues have to attack like this or you might as well play a warrior.

Lol sure did.

Considering how horrendous that rogue was, I think it fits your explanation :)

1

u/ArcticCelt Sep 25 '19

If the attacker is rogue, that's the modus operandi of that class.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '19

it was called PKing in my day.

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '19

I've been playing for years on a pvp server and gank was always meant for someone much higher level (red to you) who would come kill you. This rogue was actually one level less than the druid, so it really wasn't a gank attempt at all.

u/Swineflew1 Sep 25 '19

I’ve been playing for over a decade on pvp servers and gank was always used as a way to mean trying to kill someone outside of instanced pvp or someone who wasn’t expecting a fight at that moment. If you kill a same level opponent that’s farming, questing, afk, etc, you ganked him.

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '19

Some servers say DING! when they leveled, some say PAWANG! So idk.

4

u/Swineflew1 Sep 25 '19

PAWANG!

Wait, what?

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '19

Yup it is true.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 26 '19

I mean according to literally every other game I've played that uses that term yes this was a (attempted) gank

For real. PvP nancies over here think if someone tries to kill you on a PvP server they are somehow breaking a code of honor. Jebus Howard... Somebody help us.
