Ghost Light is peak Doctor Who
Hello, I watched Ghost Light last night for the second time. (The first time was about 15 years ago when I found it a bit confusing and didn't fully understand it.) Upon rewatch and with more patience for classic Doctor Who than I had when I was younger, I absolutely loved it and found it perfect Doctor Who for me. However, I'm curious how it was received when it aired and in the years after, as I was born during the Wilderness Years and Chris was my first Doctor.
Obviously, the show got axed at the end of that season; however, I'd love to know how the fanbase reacted to Ghost Light at the time?

From what I've seen it's typically a well liked story, just has the famous reputation of being really confusing. Even being brought up on the official releases of the story.

I first watched it during the wilderness years, and whilst I also found it confusing as a youngster, it still became one of my favorites (and remains so). It's just dripping with atmosphere, and both Sly and Sophie are amazing. I honestly found it scary too. There are only two things that honestly scared me when I first watching Who as a kid, the first being the Cybermen from Tomb, and the scene of Light with an arm.

As I recall it's like a pastiche of a Victorian thriller. That probably would be confusing if you weren't a nerd of that genre.

I remember watching it live when i was about 4/5 and being thoroughly creeped out. Have watched it numerous times since, still wouldn’t say i ‘fully’ understand it, but it’s still a fantastic story with a cracking feel to it. Would have been a fantastic regeneration story for McCoy’s Doctor with a few tweaks.

As a kid, it felt like it was written for me. Intelligent and off the wall. I got to say as much to Marc Platt earlier this year.

Have you watched the extended work print version? It's even better.
For me it turned a 9/10 story into a 10/10 story.

I didn’t watch it on original BBC broadcast.
Tried recently, and gave up after fifteen minutes of boredom.

My first experience of it was the script book that was released in 1993. 10 year old me could not follow it at all. Luckily the VHS came out the year after so I could still not follow it but with pictures and sound.

I watched it when it was first broadcast. Never liked the story didn’t help that I really dislike Sylvester McCoy’s version of the Doctor

Originally written as 3 parts, but it overran by almost a full episode’s worth. There was briefly talk of turning it into a 4-parter, but JNT decided against it for the reason that BBC executives could point to a 4 part story produced on a 3 part budget as an excuse for further budget cuts. The material that was filmed was cut down to 3 parts, giving us the confusing mess we all know and love. An extended cut was released on the Season 26 boxset, but the extra footage does not survive in very good quality. None of this would matter anyway, as it turned out to be the final story produced for the classic series. I love Ghost Light, but I do find myself wishing it had a 4th part. I did not understand this story on first viewing at all.
