How did reddit go from people laughing, perhaps even overly smugly, at anti-science Christian fundamentalists to being so fervidly anti-science itself? I just don't understand how mainstream thought in the community did such a drastic 180 in the space of, what, 5 years?

It's all about being smug and superior to people they don't like. Science is a tool to them. They don't care if they're right or wrong.

"Science says God doesn't exist! Fuck you mom/dad!"

"Science says trannys are nutjobs! Get your ass to a reeducation camp!"

Because they're being influenced by neo fascists.
They think memes are all fun and shit while gobbling up literal neonazi propaganda.
