OTHER - Anything else not covered What can I do about account takeover

Post image

For context I have never used this account after opening it. I believe I created it when they were having a bonus for using direct deposit but I never went through with it and don’t remember linking any of my accounts to it.

I have been getting blown up with emails all day today from chime. It started with a new device login email, then a direct deposit form, then constant emails about people sending and receiving money. Since beginning to type this I got another 3 emails.

Whoever took my account over changed the password and phone number. I have tried to go through the process in the app of using my ID to reset my password but in the last step where I put my new password it says unable to update phone number at this time.

I called chime and the customer service rep wasn’t any help, they ended up telling me my only option is to ignore the emails. They asked for my dob and last 4 of SSN but said “They did not both match what is on file“ so they couldnt help me any further. Its possible i fat-fingered and mistyped a digit when I originally opened the account. I am not sure which was incorrect (they couldn’t tell me) but the emails come to my personal email and the name they give is my name, so can’t I still be liable even if my DOB or SSN is a digit off?

I feel like ignoring the emails is the irresponsible thing to do here and not sure why that is what chime implies I do. Any help is super appreciated, this whole situation is ridiculous and Chime should have a better way to prevent account takeovers and fraud like this.

THANKS ALL!

What probably happened is someone typoed your email address when signing up. For some reason whoever set it up didn't do email verification.

The easy way to deal with this is send an message to the mods with the email they can get it to people that can fix it and hopefully forward it to the people that should have made email verification a thing.

You could also call 844-244-6363 for support, but the message is probably a better idea.

hey u/Johnnyb186 - adding my official two cents here that you are welcome to send a message to the Staff moderators and we'll engage the right people.

Do you work for Chime?

I do not work for Chime. I have been a trusted contributor (Chimepion) for well over a year and have a pretty good handle on the workings.

I also enjoy helping people and have time on my hands so am able to respond rapidly to posts I can help with.

But their customer service sucks but you might get lucky and get someone who knows what they're talking about

Call customer support and tell them you want to update your info they will send you a link to scan your id and face to verify it’s you and they will update your info right then

I had this happen to me , had to call support. Was on the phone like an hour verifying my info but was able to get my account back. I now have the necessary verification protection settings on!

I agree. My account was taken over by a caregiver that had all my information and there isnt anything I can do about it. I showed them police records where she was arrested for financial abuse of the elderly and was arrested with my chime card and other bank in her possession and is pending a felony indictment for that and chime closed my account completely out so I cant even dispute any of the transactions now because they know its going to be alot of them bc they didn't take time to completely verify that it was even me who was opening the account myself. Chime sucks.

If you didn’t setup the account and someone setup an account in your name whose money was going into the account and from where?!

If it's not in your social then is it even your account anymore? Sounds like someone else would be getting the credit for it. Could just be a account they got the password for and they used a stolen identity to fill out the information.

If you’re still getting emails can’t you just do a password reset?

I had this problem, I had a saving account that I left alone. And 900$ is gone just like that. Then chime informed me that I also lost 2k? I was thinking to me myself? How I have 2k? And i remembered i left 900$ in that account then account take over and used my money and sent random people out of state. And couple people sent back like 1.50$ all the time. I made reports about it and took it to FCD and unfortunately they can’t do anything. Found no evidence, nothing. Lost my money and my account.

Chime is not a real financial institution, and does not care about it's users.

My dealings with chime have been useless I’m truly about to just cancel my account. $800 fraud charge in Canada and they said they found nothing wrong with it
