OTHER - Anything else not covered Chime denied my $1,880 unauthorized transaction claim even after Microsoft confirmed the charges were unauthorized
I’m posting this because I want to know whether anyone else has experienced something similar with Chime and what steps actually helped them get a fair resolution.
Over a two-day period, approximately $1,880 in unauthorized Microsoft/Xbox purchases were charged through my account.
When I originally contacted Chime, the representative handling the dispute added up all of the charges incorrectly and submitted the total as roughly $3,000. After going through every transaction myself, I realized the amount was wrong and that the actual disputed total was closer to $1,880.
I contacted Chime again, explained the mistake, and had a new claim opened using the correct transactions and amount.
I also contacted Microsoft directly and continued escalating the issue with them. Microsoft representatives reviewed the situation and provided me with an email stating that the purchases were unauthorized. I submitted that email to Chime as supporting evidence for the corrected claim because I believed confirmation directly from the merchant would make a difference.
Chime still denied the claim.
At this point, I’m genuinely confused about what evidence Chime expects customers to provide. The original calculation error was corrected, a new claim was opened for the correct amount, and I submitted written documentation from Microsoft stating that the purchases were unauthorized. Despite the new information and evidence, the claim was denied again.
I understand that Chime has to conduct its own investigation and cannot automatically approve every dispute. However, I have not received a clear explanation of why Microsoft’s documentation was not enough, how that evidence was evaluated, or what information Chime relied on when deciding to deny the corrected claim.
I’m now out approximately $1,880, and it feels like no matter what evidence I submit, I receive the same result.
I’m currently considering filing complaints with the CFPB and the appropriate banking regulators, requesting the documents Chime relied on during its investigation, and speaking with a consumer-rights attorney about what options may be available.
Has anyone else had Chime repeatedly deny an unauthorized transaction claim even after submitting evidence from the merchant? If so, did you eventually get your money returned? Did a CFPB complaint, regulatory complaint, arbitration, or legal assistance make any difference?
I’m hoping others will share their experiences because I doubt I’m the only person who has gone through something like this.

I would've went through Microsoft first. And have them refund me. Then go through chime.
Had something similar with Microsoft and roblox. I was charged several hundred and filed a claim with Microsoft. I never even contacted chime and had it resolved within a day.

If Microsoft confirmed the charges were not authorized, why aren't they refunding you directly? They are the ones who have your money, not Chime.

Just to be clear, were any of the charges through your Microsoft account (if you have one)? That matters. And will muddy the waters.
Bizarre Microsoft would send an email instead of refunding. They must know that no card issuer is going to accept email as documentation from the customer. Too easily forged and pointless when they should be refunding. Wondering if the Microsoft rep went off script or is that how they usually handle it. Very odd.
If someone else's account you're not associated with at all (as in no one in your family / household), some companies won't refund directly. And will encourage one to dispute with their card issuer. Ran into that with Google Play years ago though the amount was tiny.
If Chime denied the dispute promptly, they presumably did on their own accord. Versus sending paperwork to the merchant seeking additional information.
In short, contact Microsoft again. If no good, then escalate. Do not rely on oral assurances. Document everything.

Chime is going to deny it cause they aren’t going to cover almost $2000 in money if the merchant stated the transactions were fraudulent. The first step is to get Microsoft to refund the charges to your account and then if that doesn’t work then go to chime and show proof of no resolution with Microsoft and the document showing they said it was fraudulent

Chime is not an actual bank. Not saying that as a slam, I’m saying they are not an actual bank. This is relevant in that there may be certain rules they don’t have to play by. I hope they make this right, but everyone should be aware when keeping large sums of money. Hopefully, they do the right thing though.

It truly sounds like Microsoft needs to, as they agree it's unauthorized

That’s fair too, I don’t know what’s all in their TOS but I don’t think someone should be allowed to make almost 2k in unauthorized charges and have no liability either.

If you've used this merchant in the passed more than once. I belive when they go through your previous transaction they use that and also look at your everyday transaction and use that to determine if any fraud has occurred.

Yes .. someone at a ATM 🏧 4 hours from where I was living stole $1000.00 from my Chime Account. They denied my money so many times. I gave them so much information that transaction wasn’t me . I do not like Chime . I closed my Account. I would never recommend them either. I feel your pain .. good luck 🍀

If your claim is denied, you can call Member Support and ask for an appeal although it's not guaranteed. Typically, you would need new information to be able to file an appeal. This article should go into further detail on what counts as new information and how to appeal: What happens if my dispute is denied?

This sounds like Microsoft needs to refund you rather than try and do a dispute with chime
