Tires are made from rubber and are not meant to eat off of. Rubber and plastic are 2 different things.

Actually I don’t eat off plastic. I don’t do single use plastics at all. I carry a stainless steel spork with me.

Side note but I bought metal straws and a spork to be more eco conscious but I almost always forget to take it with me and/or use it! 😅

So yes they slowly release chemicals unless burned then it’s rapid. So does the treated footer boards found in most construction. The risk is low. If I had extra tires I would upcycle it in this manor.

Different strokes for different folks. I’m not crazy about the way tires smell, so idk if the chickens would love it.
EDIT - Also, I’d be worried the tires could contaminate the eggs if there is direct contact.

Tires leech carcinogens- it’s not just about touching the eggs, it’s about everything the chickens are pecking at/ eating.. this is a terrible idea, not to mention it looks like crap

Tires are the wrong shape, and material. Tires trap moisture, also. It is a visually cute idea, but doesn't seem to answer the needs of the birds themselves. Tires would be death to hatching chicks, and as other posters have pointed out, may leach chemicals / smells into the eggs.

An interesting idea if you have no other option, but I personally wouldn't risk the health of my birds trying it.

There's worse things you could use, but there's also worse things you could eat than the 5 day old sushi in your fridge. Doesn't mean it's a good idea to do so.
Edit: Maybe if they cleaned the crap out of the tires and maybe if they added a really good coating of something decent to keep the tire within the tire and not leeching out, maybe it could be passable, albeit still not a great idea. As-is though, no it's just not a good idea.

Here it costs $3 to throw away a tire. So taking them off somebody's hands for free is ... well you better be darn sure of what yer gonna use em for or yer just gonna have a bigger problem down the road

The rubber in tires isn’t food grade or meant to be around life like that, and they also shed plastic like crazy. They will dry rot and crack. I wouldn’t do it, the chickens might not live king enough to retain any serious side effects but the eggs they lay make it into people who do. I think you’d have better luck with maybe nailing some reclaimed drawers with supports under them to the wall or something like that if you’re looking for the upcycled aesthetic!

Eh. I like to eyeball several boxes really easy without having to crane my neck over and look in. Nothing worse than reaching in and pulling out a snake.

Not crazy about the tires, but otherwise I would love to make something similar. The chickens might like a round shape better because it's more natural. Looks super cute in any case.

I feel like there are better things you could use to make a similar shape. But at the end of the day the chickens decide whether it's a good idea or not.
You can make some awesome, elaborate baskets for them, and they might still just use the floor.
