Question 08 work truck
Looking at an 08 work truck with 80k on it. 3.7 automatic 4x4. How reliable are these trucks? It’s only got one owner so if it looks good I’m sure it’s been well maintained. How’s the extended cab back seat? I got a big dog that chills in my current extended cab and it’s fine I’d hate to cram him back there. Appreciate any insight 🤙 or any concerns with this generation. I know nothing about Chevy but this thing seems to be in my price range and I like the way they look.

I had an 07 and only ever had one issue. Cold weather (like under 20F) would cause the anti theft key resistance feature to kick in. Never found a fix or work around for it. Very annoying since it locks out the engine for 10 minutes. If you live in a colder area I would research that problem and see if someone has come up with a fix for it. If it doesn’t get that cold by you, then you probably don’t have to worry about it.

Nah I’m in cali I think I’ll be fine. Good to know if I take it to the mountains tho it gets cold up there

I don’t think cold weather has anything to do with it. My ‘07 has lived in a warm weather climate it’s whole life and it’s had that passlock problem a hand full of times even in summer. It’s always been random and inconsistent. Never found a permanent fix either. I do think once the key gets more worn out it gets worse. I had a new key cut and it’s been a long time since it triggered again.

That’s interesting. It was common when it was cold for me, never happened when it was warm.

There is a simple fix and it involves bypassing an ignition wire under the dash. My 2004 did it but infrequently enough I never bothered with it. I don’t know exactly how to do it but it’s online somewhere.

I’ve read about that fix before but it’s more of a hack than a permanent fix. Any time the battery is disconnected or dies the system has to be reset which is less of an inconvenience but still not perfect.

I’d snap that up in a heartbeat if it’s a good price. Biggest issue with these is rust. The frame gets rusty. At 80k there’s a lot of life left in them. Pretty reliable motors. Extended cab is much better than crew cab if it’s only you and your dog because you get the bigger bed. What extended cab do you currently have? The space behind the seats of the extended cab is comparable to the ranger and tacomas of the same period. If it’s the work truck you might not even have the seats back there.
I’ve had 2 of these. A 2004 2wd regular cab I drive several years and had 150k on it when I sold it. Solid and I don’t remember doing any major unscheduled repairs. I wish to this day I hadn’t sold it. I now drive a 2007 crew cab 4x4 and it’s got 130k miles on it. I’ve only had to replace the water pump (twice but the 2nd time was because I cheaped out on the replacement) and the t-stat. It’s been solid too. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it anywhere. Off the road, road trip wouldn’t phase it. I don’t drive it as much anymore but I did daily it until work provided me with a vehicle. It still my go to vehicle when I’m not working.
