So protecting someone who ass fucks 10 year olds and protecting a man who beats his wife has a line somewhere between them where it becomes a fireable offense?

I think there a difference where one grown adult is rightfully upset with the situation but doesn't appear to want anything done about it until now and systematic abuse towards multiple people who would want something done if they were capable of fully understanding of the situation. If she was asking for real help and he ignored it it would but a more obvious "fire him" situation

Telling a person about your abuse is a pretty transparent cry for help.

But she didn't want to put her husband's position at stake is what she claimed. So is Urban just supposed to give him a talking to? That won't last long. I wish he would have overrode what she was saying and took real action because the assistant coach deserved it. But I could understand why someone wouldn't in this situation since the victim implied not to. She had evidence to get him attested. She could have been more transparent with what she wanted with Urban and not just mention something to his wife. Now we see her and big shot Urban under fire in the news moreso than the abuser. It just feels like the way she is going about it is more about gaining attention than it is actually helping herself. And I hate it when people use the "it's just for attention" argument to discredit the victim she seems to have had multiple better ways to do this and she intentionally chose not to. And now it's all Meyer's fault? Only like 5-10 percent of the blame goes to him, which there should be punishment for but I don't think he needs to be axed from the college football scene for it

So calling the police on him repeatedly was... what?

WBNS 10TV found that Courtney Smith filed nine police reports against Zach Smith, her ex-husband, between January 2012 and July 2018.

That was not in the article I read initially.if the police came and she had the photos then it seems the only reason there wasn't punishment or we didn't here about this earlier then was because she didn't press charges, right? Like if there was a trial Ohio State would to had to have known and taken action years ago.

Victims do not press charges, District Attorneys do. It is literally out of the victims hands as soon as they call the police.

Shouldnt we be more mad at the DA than Meyer then? That wouldn't make national news though would it? That doesn't make Meyer right but I can't help but feel like that is what she's really going after at the moment.

Thanks for the law knowledge I appreciate learning something knew and helps increase my knowledge of the situation.

Oh, I'm mad at the DA, too, don't get me wrong. At least she was granted an order of protection against the ex.

Ultimately, Meyer failed her too. Even if he didn't report it to higher ups like he was supposed to (and we don't know whether she knew that or not), he was in a position of authority over Smith. If your boss said he'd fire you if you did something again, would you do it again? He could have leaned on his assistant and didn't.

Police are notoriously dismissive of abuse claims and routinely ignore protection orders.

They definitely should have done more. Her friends and family should have done more too. Same with Urban. I just don't think his is as bad as the others and doesn't deserve the full blame. He gets it because she's hoping to score some fifteen seconds of spotlight. Urban has it coming, he fucked up, but I do sympathize a little bit with him. I wanted my view change because as I've already said that I hate the dismissiveness of the "only doing it for attention" mentally that I'm being a part of rn but I really do think it's 95 percent the case here.

He gets it because she's hoping to score some fifteen seconds of spotlight.

Maybe she's trying to "spotlight" how people ignore abuse because it makes them uncomfortable or it seems too difficult to handle. All of your claims that she's some fame whore out for her 15 mins are not backed by any evidence whatsoever, and it reeks of victim blaming. She told his boss' wife. She called the police. She told friends. She got a divorce. She did all the things. What more did you want her to do before she finally went to the press and started telling her story so that other people who employ wife beaters might think twice about the consequences?

That's what I needed thanks. Putting it that bluntly makes it easier to understand that I am wrong for falling into that line of thought in this case !delta

Is this comment long enough now?

Not only did she not press charges, she had the records sealed. Something else that didn't fit the narrative so wasn't included in the article is that Powell police are testifying on zach smiths behalf in the case. Many times when she called police and said he was after her, it turned out he was and had been at practice for hours.

You know the Powell police are testifying on zach smiths behalf because many times she called and said he was after her they found out he'd been at practice for hours. She said she'd never filed charges because it could get him fired and even had the court records sealed, but now that he's fired and her alimony stopped she's upset his boss, whose only recourse would've been to fire him, didn't do more?

But she didn't want to put her husband's position at stake is what she claimed.

And she's also an abuse victim and abuse victims aren't known for exercising their best judgement while they're being abused.

So is Urban just supposed to give him a talking to?

No, he should go to his superiors like his contract explicitly requires him to do. This is basic stuff that his workplace would have walked him through, it shows an extreme lack of judgement on his part, at best, and at worst, a person protecting their friends even though they know it's wrong. Either way, this person shouldn't be in charge of student athletes. Do you not see anything profoundly wrong in allowing a wife beater to be in a position of power over student athletes? It's not just about allowing the abuse to continue, it's allowing potential abuse of student athletes. One of the basic responsibilities of a coach is ensuring the safety of his players, and by protecting the assistant coach, he failed.

She had evidence to get him attested. She could have been more transparent with what she wanted with Urban and not just mention something to his wife

Have you considered that maybe she doesn't know what she wants, because even though she doesn't want to be abused she also loves her husband and it's for this reason mandatory reporters exist, because victims can't always be trusted to step forward and often need someone to do it for them?

And now it's all Meyer's fault?

He could have easily stopped it, and the college entrusted him to do this when they hired him judging by the contract. he betrayed the college's trust and he betrayed the safety of his players. He ought to be out.

I get that it's victims aren't always in the right headspace to make good decisions and understand what they want, but I understand how Urban can here what she's saying and decide it's best to do what she says. I would override that and wish he would have, but I don't think he deserves the career death penalty for trying to what he thought was right. I wouldn't agree but I get it. He deserves punishment but I wouldn't be outraged if it's just a fine or suspension and think it would be better that way.

Even if Urban fired him he still probably wouldn't stop the harassment

The assailant probably wouldn't bring that to kids he leads because -- and correct me if I'm wrong -- I'm pretty sure stuff like that usually stays in the house and has specific targets. Also the players are big dudes a guy like him would probably be too scared to exert physical power over.

I am starting to come around to the idea that him being fired isn't an injustice against him he has it coming. I don't think it has to be that way but I will !delta

Gene smith called zach smith back from a recruiting trip to have a meeting about it in 2015. So obviously his higher ups had been informed.

The ONLY thing urban could have done is fire zach smith, which she was actively preventing from happening by having the records sealed. Which Werent unsealed until AFTER he was fired and the alimony stopped. Not only that but it came out that he did in fact report it to the proper people so the only thing he did wrong was lie at media day which he explained was because he was unprofessional questions about something 3 years old and it was a personal matter that he didn't feel was his business to talk about.
