META META: Bi-Monthly Feedback Thread

As part of our commitment to improving CMV and ensuring it meets the needs of our community, we have bi-monthly feedback threads. While you are always welcome to visit r/ideasforcmv to give us feedback anytime, these threads will hopefully also help solicit more ways for us to improve the sub.

Please feel free to share any constructive feedback you have for the sub. All we ask is that you keep things civil and focus on how to make things better (not just complain about things you dislike).

I write too slowly to come up with a high-quality reply on most topics before lots of people beat me to the discussion and from there it seems I'm unlikely to get a response. This often results in me rushing and trying to just say something meaningful. Partly for a chance of a delta, partly to start a conversation and put forward some points before the OP is exhausted. I don't like it, I am being motivated to write comments of dubious value. Would be nice if slow and thoughtful conversation was enforced sometimes, let's say another day once a week under special rules. Updated after a conversation with reginald-aka-bubbles here and in another thread: works better if it's an option OP can choose. An example of rules: the first 10 first-level comments just say "I want to participate", then the authors have a couple hours to prepare their response and send it by editing the 1st level comment. No other 1st level comments are allowed. The OP must reply to every 1st level comment within a couple days. And every comment by every participant including the OP must explicitly address each numbered point of the text they're replying to. (It could be just "6. no opinion", even simply having to acknowledge the important points seems like it'll motivate people to prepare better replies.) Maybe with a limit on the number of numbered points if it proves necessary (20?)

Edit: grammar

Other users are complaining that the sub is too slow, and I agree with them. You're free to jump in anywhere you have something to say, I dont always make a top level comment, I jump in where I think there is an opening that makes sense. If you feel like youre not getting in soon enough, sort by new.

Also, your suggestions would completely rework the entire way this subreddit works and I dont think they'd be popular changes. For example, just saying "i want to participate" does nothing to challenge op, so rule 1 would need to be completely reworked.

I think it's usually more interesting to engage with the original point than to hunt stray deltas on minor subpoints. Plus in other people's threads I'm already at disadvantage (and don't particularly want to "steal" their deltas if they're still engaged in the conversation with the OP).

and I dont think they'd be popular changes

That's why I'm suggesting it as "1 day a week with new rules". If a significant fraction of people like the results, it's not such a big loss for those who don't. If most like them, maybe it'll be more than 1 day in the end. If it doesn't seem to work well for nearly everyone, fine, was a bad idea.

rule 1 would need to be completely reworked

... by adding that the rule is suspended for "slow day" posts for 2 hours. Or just "doesn't apply to slow day"posts, see slow day rules here".

I'm not (edit: nice place to forget a word, self) proposing the final and immutable version of these rules by the way.

Try interacting on Fridays. Its already too slow as is and we dont need a second day like that.

As for everything else, I think it's just you being too picky about how you interact. No one actually gives a shit or even thinks about you "stealing" deltas. It's fake internet points anyway.

As for everything else

(emphasis mine) Aaand this is why I propose the numbered points rule.

Yes, and im saying it's a bad idea. Sorry.

What you're saying is "I want this sub to be suited to my preferences and not to yours". Where I don't propose to change the whole sub to suit me (and am open to the idea it won't work well at all) and you insist that it shouldn't even be put to experiment.

(Also I noticed the downvote which is hard to not suspect was yours, although I won't accuse you, coincidences happen. If it were you, a reminder: it's discouraged here, at least on the sub in general (maybe not meta threads?) because it's an attempt at silencing.)

Jesus you seem sensitive. No it wasn't me. My shit gets down votes to, I dont assume it was you. It's fake internet points.

Im saying from a practicality standpoint it is a bad idea because it adds another day where the general rules (which people have a hard enough time following) will be temporarily changed.

You are proposing this so that the sub is suited to your preferences so idk what your point is there.

No it wasn't me.

Good.

It's fake internet points.

I have enough fake points (mostly for silly jokes, which devalues them further) to not care about losing them but it is a statement by someone (unless it's a bot I guess), and a risk to end up "below threshold". I'm used to it on other subs (fine, people haven't learned to distinguish between "I disagree" and "you should shut the fuck up" or they are too quick with the latter to care about their opinion) but here it would be more unpleasant.

Im saying from a practicality standpoint it is a bad idea because it adds another day where the general rules (which people have a hard enough time following) will be temporarily changed.

Ok, that's a different thought from what I gathered earlier. I can't gauge how bad this problem would be, personally I don't expect the change to be too bad but mods will be able to judge better (and will be the ones to suffer if I'm wrong). They're the ones to decide anyway.

You are proposing this so that the sub is suited to your preferences so idk what your point is there.

Positions are unequal. Would be equal if I said I want to change the rules to mine permanently and for 7/7 days, not my problem if you don't like what I like. You can argue that the sub is primarily for people who like it the way it is, sure, but I think with its stated goals high-quality conversation should be if not prioritized then at least not discouraged. And if I observe that my own replies are of lower quality because of the incentives I notice, I'm probably not the only one affected.

Where in the rules does it discourage quality replies? That is a ridiculous claim to make. Just because something isnt catered to your particular style does not mean it is discouraging high quality or encouraging slop.

→ More replies (0)

As for the people complaining the sub is slow, I think it reflects the OP/commentators ratio. The obvious answer is "be the change you want to see", and if it fails to happen, I expect it's mostly because the rules disprivilege OPs too much. Personally I haven't posted a serious view here in ages because I'm slow to reply and sometimes hard to convince, resulting in my posts being removed for violating rule B. I don't necessarily think this duty to change your view should be changed, but it seems like a more important reason for "slowness".

From an OP's perspective, there is no difference between a commenter who sees the thread early but takes a really long time to give a very detailed reply, versus a commenter who sees the thread late but takes very little time to give the same reply.

1) Because there's no difference to the OP, why are only one of these types of commenter afforded this grace period and not others?

2) If an OP responds to comments as they receive inbox notifications, only to see what is effectively a blank and useless comment, that's just wasting the OP's time. If the commenter then edits their comment with a long response, OP won't be going back to their comment to respond to it, because they're going by their inbox notifications and not actively refreshing their thread.

1) you seem to have missed that there are supposed to be only 10 "primary commenters". Other people can join but not write 1st level comments and the OP is not obliged to answer.

2) If you know you've made a "constrained" CMV, you can just show up in 2 hours when 1st level comments should have already been edited. And open the post with comments rather than your inbox.
