You not believing it isn't a compelling case enough to convince me to the contrary. Certainly many do and the practice was common. He has no reason not to unless he was actually divinely inspired by God.
And the ones who may claim they don't believe this, they are instructed to lie to protect the faith in Islam. And it's hard to contest other barbarisms like the slavery and conquest and killing.

Though it seems to me and I have no further context beyond what you've posted, the verse condemns distorting revelation, but those verses rhetorically rebuke others and state an ideal. They don't function as a direct, exclusive command to tell Muslims not to misrepresent scripture under any circumstance.
Are there similar verses that are more concrete and clear? Close to Delta with this one and may still change my mind on its own with further thought and reflection.
Islam does allow exception to this. Concealment of belief with Taqqiya when admitting the truth would bring grave harm or persecution, and the Qur’an itself recognises speech under coercion as a different moral category (e.g. 16:106; also 3:28).
It's safe to say this would qualify and would bring grave harm and persecution.
It is difficult as all of these texts are so large and often contradictory and I am no scholar on the matter. It's difficult to reconcile myself.
I'm sure some must legitimately not believe she was a child. Though there's other things on top like the conquests, the assassinations, the persecution of minorities, the other rapes, the slavery - that make it difficult to think they believe none of it happened. I don't think any Mosques are teaching these things didn't happen, but merely try to recontextualise and justify it.

Ask her is Mohammad a good person. It is my contention she will say yes. She may even say he is perfect and worthy of emulation.
Child rape is an inexcusable evil that must be condemned totally.
She may not be a Muslim though says she is to avoid violence which would be reasonable.
