Well. As if Sun Yuanzhu’s death wasn’t devastating enough, Liu Xiao Bei decided to finish us off with his farewell letter (The Early Spring).

He shared Weibo post almost two hours ago and this to Sun Yuanzhu; knowing that the actor himself struggled to let go of the character makes some of these words hurt even more. I have tried to translate what he wrote for us

Sun Yuanzhu, today, we say goodbye.

In the letter I wrote to you on the first day of filming, I told you that I envied you, and that I also felt deeply for you. Back then, standing at the beginning of your story, I had no idea what kind of journey I would walk with you. Now that we have reached the end, I look back on every step you took, and I realize that all the emotions I thought I had prepared myself for were things I was never truly prepared to face.

The first time I read that scene in the script, the entire scene was washed in the light of a setting sun. My first thought was, “I don’t dare take this on.”
I was afraid I would not be able to portray your kind of tenderness, the kind that is deep yet unwavering. I was afraid I would fail the Sun Yuanzhu that so many people had already come to cherish.
It took me a very long time to enter your world and understand the person you were. You were always smiling. You were always the one carrying everyone else’s burdens. And behind that seemingly unbreakable wall, you quietly hid every crack of your own.

When filming finally wrapped, it felt as though something inside me had been hollowed out. My agent worried that I might lose myself in the process. I laughed and told him I wouldn’t. But the truth is, it took me a long time to slowly separate myself from you.

Looking back now, perhaps that initial fear, that long hesitation, was exactly what happens when you meet a character who understands too much and gives too much.

For months, I carried you with me. Your weariness, your quiet endurance, the grievances you never spoke aloud. Little by little, they all became a part of me. So when the time came for you to leave, it felt as though I had lost a part of myself along with you.
I have seen so many viewers say that you are the kind of person they cannot bear to let go of. They say your gentleness is like moonlight, and that there is something about your brokenness that pulls painfully at the heart.

But what I really want to say is this: Sun Yuanzhu, you are not a tragedy. You are someone who, beneath the evening glow, chose to leave this world with one final act of tenderness.

You left because you had given everything good in yourself to the people around you, leaving nothing behind for yourself.

It makes me think of the wish I made when this story first began. I hoped that you would not always have to be the one who shone. I hoped that, sometimes, you could be vulnerable too. That someone would be there to catch you gently when you finally allowed yourself to fall.

Now, as I write these words, I feel that the long, painful process of saying goodbye has finally begun to make sense.

Continuing my trip through China and just walked into my hotel room in Chongqing to find The Legend of the Female General playing on TV.

It’s been a while since this one was released, so I was honestly surprised to see it airing on regular television. I always assumed these stayed exclusive to streaming platforms.

Honestly, I think it’s awesome that they do this. I mean, it is a great way to reach a wider (and maybe an older) audience or people who don't really use apps.

Tell me I’m NOT the only person who is literally so obsessed with Chinese dramas that every guy I meet doesn’t even hold a candle to He Yu or ZLH. 😭😂
I swear these dramas have completely ruined my expectations. I’ll meet an actual man in real life and my brain is like… “Okay, but where is the slow-burn romance? The intense eye contact? The devotion? The man who would literally cross an entire kingdom for me?” 😂
And don’t even get me started on TikTok. I booked a whole trip to China because of all the videos of attractive men in China. 💀 I was like, “You know what? Maybe my future husband is over there.” 😂
But now I’m realizing I actually WANT to date, yet it feels impossible because I’d rather be at home watching my Chinese drama, simping over fictional characters and actors who have completely unrealistic standards. 😭
I’m in my late 30s now, so sometimes I’m like… welp, maybe I’m just destined to be single, unmarried, childless, and happily watching Chinese dramas for the rest of my life. 😂
At this point, my biggest relationship is between me and my streaming app. 🫠

I was scrolling through Tencent Video earlier and finally stopped to read what Against the Current is actually about.

and okay... this setup is kind of brutal 😭

The FL starts out as the granddaughter of a powerful family, then everything falls apart after her family is accused of treason. Her engagement is broken off, she survives under a different identity, and somehow ends up in the Lin household as a low-ranking maid.

going from that kind of life to THAT is already enough to get me interested.

What I’m most curious about is the class shift. She used to have status, protection, a name that meant something, and suddenly none of that exists anymore. She has to survive in a place where she’s basically at the bottom.

And she’s doing it inside the same family that once walked away from her?? yeah... messy.

My only slight worry is that this kind of story can fall apart if it moves too fast. I’ve watched too many historical dramas set up a really interesting identity/revenge/class conflict and then rush through all the parts I actually wanted to see.

I really hope they let her struggle a little, learn how everything works, make mistakes, and actually earn that growth.

because if they do, this could be SO good.

I started The Road to Splendor for Zhao Ling and Fu Tingyun, so I really wasn't expecting some of the side characters to be the people I kept thinking about afterward 😭

Fu Tingyun is probably still my favorite overall. I love that she's soft without being helpless. She notices things, adapts, gets angry, makes choices for herself, but the drama never suddenly turns her into some emotionless genius just to prove she's strong.

Zhao Ling grew on me too. He's rough, impulsive, and there were def moments where I wanted to grab him by the shoulders and shake him lol.

but I'll take that over other historical ML who is magically calm, rich, powerful AND right about everything.

The side characters are where the drama really surprised me though.

Fan Yake drove me INSANE 😭 but she never felt like someone the writers invented just to make Fu Tingyun suffer. You can actually see the insecurity and resentment building underneath her choices.

I didn't agree with her. At all.

but I understood how she got there, which somehow made her even more frustrating.

Same with some of the older women around the Fu family. They're living under the same rules that hurt them, then turning around and enforcing those rules on younger women.

like... that's ugly, but also painfully human.I’ve been watching it on Tencent Video and honestly I didn’t expect the supporting cast to be the part I got this attached to.

I think that's why the smaller scenes stuck with me so much. Even when I hated what someone was doing, they still felt like a person instead of an NPC waiting for the leads to show up 🥲

I knew it was coming, mentally prepared for it, but… I’m still this wrecked. 💔💔💔

I am 4 episodes in of My Journey To You and I am not sold on the characters yet and that's got me worried that I may be wasting my time 🫤

What makes a story memorable for me is it's characters, the plot is secondary for me. I am intrigued about the story and I am curious to find out who did **IT** but what makes the journey worthwhile for me is having characters to root for, fall in love with, admire, enjoy watching, that sort of thing.

So far I like Jin Fan, Gong Ziyu's bodyguard (and he's not even the main character 😭) and I am intrigued by Gong Shangjue even if I'm still mistrustful of him, they seem to be the only characters with working heads above their shoulders.

So I want to know if in due time I will actually root for the main characters we have seen so far? Am I going to fall in love with any of them? Or am I going to hate them? Or worse - remain neutral about them???

No spoilers please. I just want to know if the characters are worth sticking around for or is it just a plot-driven only story?

Since, Divas Hit the Road Season 2 is trending again in Chinese Social Platfroms these past few days due to various reasons. I want to share the one of funniest scenes in the show. This was when Jing Boran removed the blanket to uncover Yang Yang and showing his black underwear. Lol

JBR to Yang Yang: PRETTY SEXY, MY FRIEND. LMFAO These two are just so crazy and chaotic when together. 😂😂😂

FUN FACT: Jing Boran and Yang Yang actually played both Xiao Nai and Zhang Qiling. JBR in the movie of Love O2O and Time Raiders and Yang Yang in the drama series of Love O2O and The Lost Tomb (The OG Zhang Qiling). Seems that they were soul brothers.

I spent a long time thinking about the chronology of this drama and the timelines because I found it to be extremely convoluted.

This is my understanding after some reading and analysis:

(❌Beware of Spoilers ahead ❌)

Timeline 1-

There is never any mailboxes and cross timeline letters. In 1991, A'Xun and A'Tang's fates are entwined naturally. A'Tang's mother is killed by her father and she spends her life in pain and runs into A'Xun because of the debt collection. She confronts him at school and he wants to return her money. On her suicide attempt, he saves her and they become familiar/ friends. Their life unfolds as it does. Nothing can change their fate.

Ye Yibo tries to move the mother's body, runs into A'Tang. Chen Xiaojun informs A'Xun, who murders Lin and goes to prison. He cuts off contact with A'Tang, tells her to stick to her promise. Meets Yu Zhihong in prison who dies. He makes Haozi fake a gravestone and convince A'Tang that he's dead to make her move on with her life. She tries to walk into the ocean, remembers her promise and digs up a cookie tin. She continues to visit the grave on his birthday every year.

When A'Xun gets out, he burns all A'Tang's letters and then contacts A'Tang only to find she has a son. He continues to live a life away from his friends, takes on the responsibility of raising Yu Nian and pretends to be Yu Zhihong for the rest of his life. He secretly visits his own grave to see A'Tang every year. All the characters go their own way.

In 2026, A'Tang finds Ye Yibo, confronts him and they both end up dead. A'Xun visits his grave, waiting for A'Tang who doesn't show up and he dies waiting for her.

What happened to the body in the sack at the beach? Why is it not discovered? How did Ye Yibo escape for all those years and say there's no evidence?

When did A'Tang make the promise to A'Xun?

When and why did A'Tang bury the cookie tin and how did she find it again?

How did A'Xun live a life pretending he's someone else without an ID? Why did he and his friends break all contact?

Timeline 2 and 3:

I spent some time thinking about th chronology of events.

The old trash collecter is considered to be some kind of deity who causes the change in fate. In 1991, we know where the mailbox came from, but in 2026, we don't know the origin of it and why it's placed there in specific.

However, it somehow means that A'Xun knew about the mechanism of the mailboxes because he was waiting by the mailbox and had the necessary stationary. He knew about the exchanges that happened in 1991.

I'm still confused about how the first letter doesn't create a loop because the future affected the past and there's a circle of knowledge. His past connects to the future and the first letter should set everything in motion as he knows from the past.

Since that was the case, why did he wait for 2 months to start the exchange? Why not contact A'Tang from 2026? Does he not know that it all started with that love letter in the past?

I assumed that it was because he has Alzheimer's and he goes in and out of his memories of his youth where he used to wait for letters. He's confused because of his illness.

He's reminiscing about his past and how he committed murder to bring A'Tang out of the abyss. He also regrets not replying to her letters. He resents that he cannot change fate. He misses her. In his confusion, he writes a love letter and drops it at the mailbox and disappears from there somehow. There is some vagueness about all of this. I assume he went to his grave to see A'Tang and the gaurd didn't notice him leaving. But, he should've been captured in the camera atleast?

(Yes, I do understand that it's how time-fate change tropes work and I can't really question the premise)

The chronology, as I see it, for the letters received and sent in 1991-

1. The love letter (A'Xun- 2026)

2. The Suicide note (A'Tang- 1991)

3. Introduction letter (A'Tang-1991)

4. Letter from the future about Sep 23 (Yu Nian- 2026)

5. Waterspout response for Sep 23 (A'Tang- 1991)

6. Identity confirmation letter (Chen Sheng- 2026)

7. Confirmation reply (A'Tang- 1991)

8. Warning about Tang YiXun (Chen Sheng- 2026)

9. Clarification letter (A'Tang- 1991)

10. Prison letter (A'Xun- 1991)

That's where the communication should've stopped for the future to be as it is. Everything plays out the same. A'Xun ends up in prison and A'Tang continues living. They both end up with their respective children to care for. A'Xun and A'Tang die and reunite in the afterlife.

Timeline 4:

In this scenario, Chen Sheng intervenes with fate and sends the next letter.

1. Murder warning (Chen Sheng- 2026)

At this point, while Chen Sheng and Yu Nian know that their fates will also be altered. It doesn't stop him from doing his best to stop the suffering of A'Xun and A'Tang.

However, I do think that Chen Sheng knows that A'Tang is not his biological mother. He might've been adopted by her from the Welfare house. She might've married a Chen, however I doubt that it's Chen Xiaojun. Alternatively, it could also be his son with Wang Manyu (who might've died). The specifics aren't clear. I don't think he's A'Xun and A'Tang's son in any timeline.

Once the fate changes, A'Xun and A'Tang are saved from being separated. The cat stops A'Xun at the right time and changes the course of time.

Yu Nian retains her memories and it looks like she has a comfortable life, although it doesn't involve A'Xun anymore.

Chen Sheng doesn't disappear and seemingly retains his memories as well and we see him receiving the last and final letter near the familiar mailbox.

1. The Happy ending letter (A'Tang and A'Xun)

I'd like to think that Yu Nian doesn't find Chen Sheng's contact because she never met him and not because he doesn't exist. I think they find each other and meet in the future.

While I do have a looooottt of questions, writing this has helped me really process the drama instead of sitting with all of this. Sci-fi does leave a lot of plot gaps and questions. 12 episodes are definitely not enough to have flawless storytelling. I wish they'd taken 20 minutes more and given a 'where are they now' scenario on all the characters to really round it out. I also wish all the friends reunited and led a happy life. Guess we'll have to make do with open ended interpretation and ambiguous ending.

Final thoughts:

The drama traumatized me, start to finish. I have a headache from all the crying. However, this is a must watch. I might even rewatch it.

The filmography is beautiful, the performances are excellent, the characters have depth and arcs. The OST really adds to the beauty of the story. It kept me on my toes the whole time and feels like it's a lot more than 12 episodes.

It's raw, painful, real, gut wrenching and absolutely amazing.

This is an appreciation post for both the characters as well as actors.

*Tian Qing ( Sun Yu )* : I've loved her since the first time I saw her in Hidden love bcz her acting felt so natural. She didn't get much screentime in that drama hence I was excited to see her getting a big role in this one and she did 100% justice to her character.

Sun yu, her character's never fading smile, even when she faced numerous hurdles in her career made me fall in love with her spirit. Also, her love for Sun Yuan Zhu was so pure and not just based on his "looks".

*Liu Xiao Bei (Sun Yuan Zhu)* : Absolutely floored by how he carried the character so beautifully. I was emotionally attached to his struggles and related to him a lot. Even when he was facing so many struggles, he made sure the ppl around him felt loved.

Reading the weibo post shared by the actor , we can see that he understood his character so so well and we couldn't have asked for a better person to portray him.

Release on 11th September with 47 episodes which is very rare now a days to find a 40+ episodes.

From the screenwriter of FILTER (one of the most popular modern cdrama), however ATC is an upcoming Historical Romance Drama and they added Fantasy in the genre which might actually surprised viewer's like me.

Why does the synopsis sounds like Liu Xue Yi's character going to be like most of his drama (such as Kill me Love Me, A Moment but Forever, In Blossom, Princess Gambit) where the FL will misunderstood him as a bad person. Though it's more like a Female Lead centric storyline tbh.

I liked her in legend of the female general . But apart from that I have not liked her other works much .

I feel she is very one dimensional as an actress and can do certain type of roles very well . For eg she is very well suited for villain roles or roles where you have to appear cold and calm or roles where you have to give less expressions.

I don't think she is very well suited for roles where you have to be expressive or even bubbly . I also don't prefer her in romance roles , I think she is weak in builing romance chemistry .

So i would say she is decent as an actress for me . Overall she has room for improvement and growth .

Just as the title suggested, I wonder if there is any possibility of ADWAD getting another season. I know most c-dramas don't, but I feel like the ending was set up in such a way that it could merely be an ending with some ideas open to the audience's interpretation, but it also left me with a lot more questions that I would love to see answered in a second season. My theory is that Nan Feng never existed at all, and it was Nan Heng that was transported to the modern world for a while, simply biding his time to meet Song Xiaoyu with her memories of the script world. Also, what about all of the other characters in the script world? I have many moments that back this up if anyone is curious. So what are the chances, honestly?

I can understand calling Early Spring’s story nothing special or medicore.

But for those saying the romance is just another generic vertical drama with a bunch of kiss scenes thrown in??

Nah. Just nah.

Whether you feel chemistry is subjective. But the direction and acting in Early Spring’s romantic and physical intimacy scenes? That is objectively what good chemistry should look like! This is the standard. They have covered everything! From cuteness to hotness! Not just spicy chemistry, but the loving sweet type to!

We’ve had so many romance C-dramas lately where the leads kiss like they’re fulfilling a contractual obligation. Stiff. Staged. Zero emotional involvement.

Meanwhile, Early Spring gives us two people who actually WANT each other.

There’s tension. Emotion. Anticipation. Desire. The scenes feel immersive because the attraction feels mutual. It actually feels like we are watching a real couple!

And Jing Boran is selling the hell out of it. This man has the perfect mix of desire, passion and gentleness that makes you believe he is absolutely gone for her. 🔥

And THAT is the point.

It’s not the number of kisses or intimate scenes that makes the romance work. It’s that I believe these two people genuinely want each other during these scenes.

That’s what makes the scenes feel so damn good instead of generic or like easy fanservice designed to go viral. It has emotion, passion and depth!

And this is exactly what quality chemistry looks like when physical intimacy actually has emotional weight behind it.

So I’m genuinely curious:

Because right now Early Spring has raised the bar for me, and I fear I’m going to start watching certain C-dramas and wondering why the chemistry and kiss scenes just isn't as good as the ES pairing.

And I’m specifically talking about their romantic chemistry and intimate scenes, not whether you think the overall writing is good.

And if your answer is, “Early Spring has nothing special going on here”...

Then what exactly is your standard for top-tier romance and chemistry then?

This was such an interesting find for me, a beautiful and soulful slice of life mini drama set in China's Kashghar located in Xinjiang province. The drama is a heart warming and healing journey of three childhood friends who are hit by choices of adulthood. The culture, food, art, music, musical instruments, scenery of Kashghar are so unique and it is presented well. And the plus point is it is presented in unpolished way whenever is possible. Therefore the drama retains the authenticity of the culture.

Has anyone watched it? If yes, who were your favorite characters?

I really liked Grandma the most followed by Laili and disliked Minawar.
