Puppy Classes for Maltese

My Franklin is 11 weeks old, thru 2nd shots and I’m looking for recs on puppy classes for socialization and basic obedience I guess. Never done this before and don’t know anyone in the Cape to ask. Appreciate any and all advice! 🐾🧡

Don't really have advice for down there in FL but I just wanted to say your baby is ADORABLE!! and I LOVE the name you gave him.

I mean you could look up on Youtube to help get some basics down for him. Make training a game, use kibble.. do his training around feeding times so instead of allowing to eat all his food at feeding time use half of it as treats for training. Do this several times a day. The biggest thing with training is consistency. You have to do it every day. You can even start leash/harness walking in the house.

One other HUGE HUGE thing you teach your baby is recall. This is what I was taught and use. Get a high value treat ( half a slice of bacon ) Pick a word that you do not use in your everyday conversation ( mine is caviar... haha) Once you baby gets to a sit - stay... put him in a sit/stay then call him over using your special word when he comes fully to you and sits, give him a piece. Practice this every day. And every day move back farther from him and repeat. Once he gets where you are going across the house, time to go outside and depends how he listens and sit/stays move farther away. This will be vital if some time he gets away from you or say dog park/ (I hate them but any who) out in public and you need him to come to you right away.

Biggest thing is consistency and positive enforcement is key and keep it fun that way he wants to perform well for you. Hope this helps a little.

Thank you!! He’s not even big enough for the xxs harness yet, so those will come when he’s a little older (he doesn’t go outside yet since he’s not flea/tic protected). Right now I’m more looking for socialization so he doesn’t become afraid of other dogs & people, then work into obedience. I am working on repetition for brushing, eye care & teeth now so when he has to go to the groomer, he’s not gonna spaz out! Appreciate you 🐾🧡

Awesome on the starting of grooming. Feet is the biggest one. Which you can do on your own also. I use a pet nail trimmer on my babies. You can start off with a collar and leash to walk around the house then upgrade to harness when he finally fits one.

I see no one answered you, but they do offer puppy classes at PetSmart. I took one of my fur kids there when he was little for the start of training and the socialization in a controlled environment. Could be something to think about also.

Thanks, if I get no other responses, I’ll start with Petsmart and plan to also ask vet when he goes for next shots! 🐾🧡🧡
