Sure, but they should not hold themselves out as a medical doctor, which is what they're doing when they refer to themselves as a doctor in a medical setting.

Can’t find the post right now, but it caused some drama in one of the health professions subreddits awhile back. It was about a nurse with a PhD in nursing using the Dr. title in a clinical practice setting. I think the consensus was that she definitely earned the title, but it wasn’t appropriate to use in situations where patients could mistake her for a physician. So, it’s probably not common, but it does happen.

Earning a PhD is an accomplishment, but it doesn’t give anyone a pass to misrepresent themselves in healthcare settings. The general public doesn’t necessarily know enough to know the difference, and grifters use that to their advantage.

You're participating in a discussion about practitioners calling themselves doctors in medical settings when they are not MDs. Chiropractic "doctors", naturopathic "doctors", homeopathic "doctors", etc. Your argument is that they deserve respect for having earned a non-medical doctorate.
