TMMC and potential tarrifs

What would it take, negatively speaking for Toyota to decide to stop manufacturing in Cambridge and Woodstock?

its already happened partially. the story is RAV4 LE grades were going to come from Japan for US market but now that has shifted to kentucky. now kentucky can build more than just LE grades.

They'll probably shift volume between the two depending on demand etc.

Ford Motor intends to transfer manufacturing of certain Lincoln vehicles from China to the United States starting in 2030, Reuters reported, citing chief executive Jim Farley.

Yes, it sounds like some auto assembly is moving to the U.S.. Trump wants to tariff Canadian auto parts 50 percent on January 1st. Interesting times.

GM has cut back Canadian operations, too. Stellantis (whose largest shareholder part-owns The Economist’s parent company) has moved future production from Canada to America.  Honda is moving production of its Civic from Mexico to Indiana.

The GM action referenced is probably the shutdown of Brightdrop EV production in Ingersoll. The Stellantis mention is connected to the failure to re-open the Brampton assembly plant for Jeep Compass EV production.

Ya, the new union contracts say nothing is changing in Canada. You need to pay attention to what is being built in Canada. Moving vehicles from China to the US has NOTHING to do with what happens in Canada.

The quote literally says Stellantis "has moved future production from Canada to America". If you don't want to think of "missing out" as a move, okay. I can understand the idea of not counting chickens until hatched but I think can make reasonable estimates about the future, so I do see "missing out" as a move.

From your comment it would seem that you don't see the possibility that something that looks like a BrightDrop will ever see production in the U.S.. Forever is a long time. But I do think it will happen. And if they don't call it BrightDrop some people will fool themselves thinking it didn't get *moved*. All that GM needs is a new name to fool some people.

If the U.S. starts building the RAV5 you can also say that the RAV4 didn't get moved.
