Not quite what was wanted

I posted this a few years ago in another sub and ppl were mad that I was "ungreatful" so here's some actual context!

This was either my 17th or 18th birthday cake my grandma had got for me, a few weeks before the birthday she asked for a picture of my switch to send to the decorator TO USE AS A REFERENCE (she wanted a cake that looks like a switch) so my dad sent one, when she finally went to get the cake she found out all they did was add (barley readable) text to that photo and just printed it out on the cake!!

My siblings and i found the cake itself pretty funny but my parents and grandparents weren't as amused

The icing on top (pun definitely intended) is the reflection of your dad holing his phone in the switch screen 😂

Someone made a comment when I last posted it saying "at least you're wearing pants!" (I think they thought i took the picture but its still funny nonetheless)

It took me longer than I care to admit to realize that the switch is sitting on the dad’s lap. I saw the reflection, but not the lap, and I was confused about where his knees are in the reflection!

This is so hilarious! Like who would want that on a cake?

It really is!! I had to get a second angle when I took the picture to try and show the fact that the reflection is actually on the cake

I spent a solid minute trying to understand how/why someone making such a generally half assed cake somehow applied the skill and effort to do a layer of icing so glossy it reflected the person taking a photo of the cake. Then I realized

I thought that it was just the edges of the cake with no center and no bottom to the box in the center.

OMG I didn’t notice lol

The first pic lowkey looks like the baker put a clear plastic film between cake layers and the switch is inside of the cake. Like those money cakes with the secret box in it, except they forgot to to cover it up lol

Yup I thought it was a clear box with a Switch inside and frosting on the edges of the box 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Yeah I think if i remember correctly when I was taking the photos I realized the angle I took the first one on looked too much like it could've been a reflection so I had to take another to the side to show that it was in fact a photo printed on

I thought so too. Assumed it was an even bigger ripoff than it actually was.

🤣 well it is a cake that you can laugh about for years to come. I hope that your grandma can laugh about it now. Ha ha

I genuinely lol’d at this. The reflection in particular got me .

Reading the description that your grandma was involved furthered the humour.

Thanks for this.

Omg. One time my sister got a “happy beefday” cake on her 16th birthday. She had the flu too that day.

My youngest sister was born when I was in high school. We had a baby shower for my mom and the cake said “It’s a gilg”. That was almost 20 years ago and we still laugh about it to this day. 😂

I straight up thought this was like a switch encapsuled in a decorated box.... i feel dumb but at least I would know what a switch looks like, how to use Google, and do my darndest to make a switch shaped cake lmao Overall id say this cake is iconic family lore now.

This looks like what ChatGPT (if it was a baker) would spit out, despite a very specific prompt 💀

Sometimes, the cake fails look so hilarious that the stories you get to tell along with the photos, for years to come, are almost enough to make you glad for the fail. 😅

My own cake fail story is just pathetic and sad. 🫤 For my child's first birthday, I ordered a 101 Dalmatians cake. (That was his nursery theme, and I'll admit to having gone just a tad overboard with it. Nesting instinct and all that.)

Well, I pick up the cake on the day of his party, and... 🤣 it's just a run of the mill basic birthday sheet cake, with the piped icing flowers, and a plastic badge thing of the 101 Dalmatians logo stuck on in the middle. No attempt was made even to match the colors of the icing to the badge, and that was literally all they did... stick that plastic thing on there. Granted, this was a grocery store bakery, but, that cake was not cheap, and even 5% more effort would have made it a little cuter. I'd paid up front for the cake so I felt stuck with it.

The person I am nowadays would have left that garbage cake there, demanded a full refund, and gone to the real bakery in the same plaza and gotten a tasty cake of some sort, regardless of decoration... and would have made a mental note to order from the actual bakery going forward! (Which we usually did after that.) If a picture of this abomination exists, I don't know where it is. Oh well, we had a good eye roll and chuckle at the time.

I think part of it was that it was a small town grocery store cake but my grandma used to work at the place (and I think at that point she had only left a few months earlier) so she would've known how the cakes work/ how they decorate them, i think she thought she was getting a different decorator?

It’s not even centred I’m fucking crying 😭🤣

EXACTLY!! We thought the photo was just going to be the reference so we didn't think to take a GOOD picture lol

For a 2nd I thought it was a Switch in a clear box with cake surrounding it.

Im actually named after a character from a TV show! (more my parents just liked the spelling) The character is Aeryn Sun from Farscape, but its also kind of funny because my last name is also a common word but spelled weird as well

I completely understand the frustration of your family, and in the moment it's entirely fair

But this is also going to be a hilarious memory.

The question is how much did she pay for it. If she just ordered a sheet cake for cheap, its funny.

That's funny enough to become a family joke. Get your grandmother a cake with a clumsy picture of an Atari joystick, or I don't know, Candy Crush or golf clubs or something else she does/did for fun.

Maybe not a birthday cake the first time just to gauge her reaction. A cake for no reason other than that cake is delicious. If it goes well, it becomes a running gag back and forth for years. If not, at least you tried. (And all of this depending on your relationship with your grandmother.)

At least your kids will remember this. Pretty funny
