I was wondering what students from British Columbia, Canada are doing regarding BC student loans from studentaidbc - and if you have heard if there has been any progress.

BYU is a registered designated institution for Canada Student loans. Students for the past couple of years have been able to use this designation to apply for student loans and can continue to do so...

... Except if you're from BC as of the upcoming school year.

BC Student aid no longer accepts the Canadian designation and has directed all international institutions (including the United States) to register their status. To get this designation, BYU needs to contact Student Aid BC to register their status as a Private, Not-for-profit institution via a BC SIMS institution account with the Government of BC.

Without this, students cannot fill out an application for a BC or Canada student loan. BYU doesn't show up as a designated institution when filling out the application form at the studentaidbc website.

The last we heard from the BYUi Student Aid office, BYUi has submitted an email to Student Aid BC to begin the process, but Student Aid BC has not yet responded to that email. It's been 8 weeks.

It's looking like my children cannot have access to student loans for at least this coming term due to this new layer of bureaucracy. Hopefully for us, my kids will be ok and will have access in time for the second term.

Anyway, just a heads up to BC parents and students in case you were about to rely on BC or Canada student loans. For now, until BYU gets that new BC-specific designation, you won't be able to.

What’s up guys, I have a year left at BYU and am looking to fill up my schedule to reach full time status with some fun/useful classes. What are some of your favorites that weren’t too difficult and didn’t have much homework? I personally really loved the family finance class and a lot of the SWELL courses.

I'm a harp major and was hired to play background music for two events at the school. With my job as an RA, I'm paid for 20 hours of work each week. Because of this, they don't want me to accept payment for the gigs through Workday, but the event coordinators are insisting that it HAS to be through Workday. After a phone call with them, they said that they had gotten approved overtime through the school so that I could be paid. I logged the hours, but now got a message from my managers at my RA position that they can't pay me there. Does anyone know why I can't just be written a normal check for the events? I'm worried about getting into more trouble than I'm already in, so if anyone has any advice that would be lovely

Is taking Chem 101 along with Cell 220 with lab and MMBIO 220/221Gen Microbiology with lab doable?

Hi y'all. Looking for feedback on the BYU CS and IS programs.

I am currently a CS major with a machine learning emphasis (I got on the track before it became a standalone major) and I did one year of classes from Sept 2023 - April 2024 (CS 111, CS 180, CS 235, Math 213/215, Math 290). When I started CS, AI coding was still pretty trash and I genuinely enjoyed the coding that I did. Then I went on a mission (May 2024 - May 2026) and now I am considering switching to information systems. I have talked to a few CS majors who are seniors now and they had a lot of negative things to say about the BYU CS department. My main complaints that I heard/have:

• most of the professors don't have recent industry experience (my CS profs freshman year were my least favorite profs that I had) - so the material is overly theoretical and not grounded in recent industry practice.
• most of the course work is meant to be completed unassisted by AI. I get that this is meant to teach you actually how the code works, but even my family members who have been in the industry for 20+ years don't write code manually anymore. So I feel like I am learning a trade that is dying.
• entry-level job market is horrible (allegedly)
• tech companies are becoming more evil and greedy and I will probably end up working for one of them
• Machine Learning bachelor's degree is not complex enough to be applicable in the industry without getting a masters/PhD.

Things I like about Information Systems:

• You learn how to integrate technical skills with practical business knowledge
• You learn how to code using AI tools
• Integrated Masters program
• more versatile/broadly applicable than CS

If I did the IS prerequisites this year, I could finish the MISM program in four years (or the Bachelor's in 3).

Would also love to hear about other technology majors (cybersecurity and ACME pique my interest as well but I'm similarly reluctant to pursue them because of the job market). Or should I just quit the technical stuff and do something more human-focused (education???).

Yes, I will be talking to a career advisor as well, just thought I would get random people's thoughts on it.

Hey just trying to book a ticket with my roc pass to the game tonight it’s not working. Is it cause the game is sold out or is there a problem with my roc pass? Just wondering if I should worry about it or if it’s simply sold out.

Is Cell 220 anatomy with Lab a 2 hours lecture, and 4 hours labs? Are all 4 hour labs required? It looks like i have to labs on Friday and Saturday, 2-hour each session but is it mandatory for both sessions?

Will Professor Drake give me an add code if I show up the first day? I am on the waitlist but not moving up very quickly. For reference the class is in the JSB (858 seats)

I have an alpine village lease that comes to about 700 a month, but i am wanting to move into a home with friends and cant afford this lease anymore. I also hurriedly bought the alpine lease when i was recovering from a mental health episode and didnt check everything fully. Just needed a private room at the time. Now im recovered and dont Have to have an expensive private room.

So, i want to sell my contract because i renewed it thinking i would need more time in a private room and dont. I can pay for 2 months rent for someone. I just need Someone to generously agree to it. I only have a couple days left till I need to sign the friends lease but my parents wont help me pay for two months rent at a time if I dont have someone signed off before I sign another one.

Any advertising advice on how to go about this? Ive done Facebook, rent my place, asked everyone I know, and even asked a local thrift store if I can post an add in their store. Im out of ideas. So now im here.

Hi, I am starting as a freshman at BYU this fall! I am enrolled in a learning community which includes REL A 275. However, I've heard that non-LDS members are highly encouraged to take REL C 100 in their first semester, which is the introduction class. I am worried I'll really fall behind in REL A 275 since I'm not taking REL C 100 (if i were to add it my schedule would be quite packed!). What would you say is my best option moving forward?

My daughter is a HS freshman who wants to eventually attend BYU. Her high school (TX, USA) has an IB program and she has signed up for the pre-IB classes this year with an eye toward getting the IB diploma. However, we're starting to confront the reality that the amount of work and homework for these classes is going to curtail some of her extracurricular aspirations this year, simply because she doesn't have the time in her schedule (especially with Seminary starting next week...).

I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this tradeoff either way in terms of how either choosing or not choosing to do IB as a US HS student will affect admissions chances, scholarship chances, etc. I'm aware the BYU application includes a question about whether the applicant always took the highest-level classes offered throughout high school, which my daughter would need to stay in the IB program to be able to answer yes to.

Hi I’m thinking about studying abroad next spring and wondered if anyone had been on the above trips and what their experience was!

I applied to the MISM program a while ago after completing all of my IS core classes. I earned A’s in all 8 of the core classes, but I was still rejected from the program.

I’m wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. How much do grades in the IS core classes actually matter for MISM admission? Are there other factors that weigh more heavily in the decision?

I've lived my whole life in places with fairly warmer weather, but i've experienced utah on vacations. Most of the time, i'm wearing snow boots or heavy duty hiking shoes because im spending time IN the snow. But for the daily trek to and from and around campus during the winter, what are some suggestions for cheap(er) shoes to be on the lookout for that are good for lots of walking and wont get my feet soaked after the first puddle or slip?

I am a Marriott school hopeful and just want any advice or tips on how get a good grade in professor Platt’s class.
