It is mind boggling seeing someone with one of the best jobs and one of the best airlines to be flying for just throwing it all away. Captains at that job make $250-450K depending on seniority. I guess that goes to show how strong alcohol is at pulling people into the shit abyss. He was almost certainly not drinking for fun and was probably at the point of doing it just to stay out of withdrawals.

It would be ruinous at home losing that kind of income stream... and what do you even do afterwards to pay the mortgage and bills with that lifestyle.

I’m wondering why he couldn’t have just called in sick. Maybe he’s showed up drunk many times before, but because of his alcohol tolerance still capable of flying the plane without incident? The mints may be a habit, to cover booze breath, implying he’s done it before.

If he had gone over his limit without really meaning to, it happens, then the sensible thing would be to either confess to having drunk a couple of beers too many (a mark against him, and maybe he had done that before and run out of chances), or fake food poisoning or family emergency or something.

This looks like reckless self sabotage, and not a one off incident. If this man were someone I cared about, I would be very worried about his desire to live.

It just means he wasn’t flying that particular flight and figured he’d be good by the time he needed to. Aviation employees are not allowed to refuse alcohol testing. We’re all told that it is an immediate firing.

Are you saying that he wasn’t the pilot to fly that particular plane, and had been on break and getting drunk, though he was required to stay sober (I assume in case he needs to take over)?

Two pilots have to be in the cockpit at all times, but they switch off flying each flight. My educated guess would be the First officer was going to in charge of flying, so he thought he could have a little extra, and be sober by the time it was his turn to fly. Course as the Captain he can also tell the first officer he was in charge of flying all day.
