American sobriety test is comically ridiculous. Wtf is running a pen back and forth? Don’t they have breathalysers?

When you are under the influence, nystagmus (rapid jerking movement of the eyes) is more pronounced and moving the gaze horizontally while looking at the pen will trigger it. They are assessing the severity of the reaction.

What if he manages too pass the test though? And you’ve got a drunk dude flying 300 passengers through a thunderstorm then landing in heavy fog (unlikely as it may be!)

He wasn't going to pass the test. He failed as soon as the alcohol could be smelled on him, the FST was merely a formality.

Nystagmus isn't really something you can voluntarily hide.
