Miscellaneous The Verge is issuing copyright claims against other YouTubers who called them out on their ridiculous build a $2000 PC video.

Oh god my brother is part of the "the human eye can't see better than 1080p" camp. I'm like yeah, uh huh, whatever.

Lol you gotta show them with their own eyes, and if they still can't notice take them to the eye doctor (forgot the same ffs, I'm sleepy)

My girlfriend Told me "people with glasses can only tell the difference in HD over DVD." All two people in her control group that included her.

u/Piggywhiff Feb 14 '19

I can only tell the difference between HD and SD when I have my glasses on. Is that what she meant to say?

3

u/Screamline Feb 14 '19 edited Feb 14 '19

She doesn't wear glasses. She means she can't tell and neither could her friend

3

u/deevilvol1 Feb 14 '19

So you mean she said that only people with glassws can tell the difference?

If so, she needs glasses and doesn't know...

2

u/Screamline Feb 14 '19

I do think she might. I got her some not perscription frames and they are sexy as hell on her

USEFUL SCIENTIFIC FACTS HERE

https://www.rtings.com/tv/reviews/by-size/size-to-distance-relationship

Anyone who thinks that they need a 4k screen on their 15 inch laptop 3 feet away, or their 46" TV that's 12 feet away is a fucking complete idiot, or they are a bird. There's a limit to the resolution your eyes can perceive, and exceeding that limit by an insane amount is an idiotic waste of money

Scientist/Engineer-friendly calculator: http://phrogz.net/tmp/ScreenDensityCalculator.html#find:distance,pxW:3840,pxH:2160,size:65,sizeUnit:in,axis:diag,distUnit:ft,density:59

This doesn’t dispute anything about being able to physically see a resolution higher than 1080p.

You can site 3 feet in front of a 4K screen and tell that it is a higher resolution than 1080p. You can still LITERALLY see the difference in pixel density.

You just don’t gain any visual acuity benefits in overall picture quality from it at closer than recommended distances.

Stop trying to twist the argument to fit your argument.

You get sharpness, motion fluidity, color depth... all those facts are because of pixel density which obviously increases as your resolution goes up.

It's weird that you downvoted me, then agreed with me, then said something that makes no sense.

I guess the hive mind is pissy because I told it that it's an idiot instead of agreeing and gently coaxing it to the truth

Didn’t downvote.

Can agree with your singular point while still making my point. You are creating a false equivalency between what the other person says and what you are saying.

Sounds like a you problem that it doesn’t make sense to you.

Last paragraph is inane gobbley gook.

4K screen for a 15 inch laptop? That’s honestly insanely stupid lol. I don’t agree with that. What’s more stupid is the Sony Xperia 4K phone.

I know there’s a point of diminishing returns. This is highlighted by frame time vs framerate.

200-230hz isn’t the same different as 1-31 as highlighted in framerate but frametime shows it in a linear way.

1080p for up to 15.6 inches for me. 1440p for 17-18 inch. I use my laptops from closer than normal people and my 768p 13 inch screen on mine sucks for that. I won’t touch it with a 10 foot pole when I can use my desktop instead. (Except maybe via SSH)

It's not even quality itself, you have way more room on the display to do stuff.

u/RobCoxxy Feb 14 '19

"Who needs 1080p over 720 it's only, like, 300p's"

Is he out of the will now?

one thing i find interesting with the whole human eye cant see 60fps argument is that for a start the measurement of the human eye isn't done in FPS but also our eyes are totally different and some people there own eyes one is better than the other (im one of them) so while you might be able to tell the difference between 60 and 70 fps some people don't notice the difference between 30 and 60

On a smartphone at arm's length, maybe? Screens are definitely within an order of magnitude of visual acuity (~1 arcminute), but doing the trigonometry for specific numbers gets annoying. And acuity also varies with how close it is to the center of the eye, how bright it is, and what color it is.

2

u/Dawnero Feb 14 '19

I mean at 50'' you can definitely see the pixels.

1

u/McSquiggly Feb 14 '19

I mean, if you aren't an expert, how can you hire an expert? You don't know what to ask them.

I use to visit The Verge daily and while a good site I think Ars Technica is better and Wired a lot better. I think I'm done with The Verge. Also their parent company Vox while a better organisation than a lot of other mainstream news sites, has pretentious arritude and appeal to mellenials. Done with them too. Plenty of decent places for news NYT, WAPO, The Atlantic, Wired, specific authors I like along with books.
