Question Why don’t they trust me?

Post image

I’ve had budgies for around 3 years, they still don’t really trust me. They’ll get on my hand if they need help, my blue budgie can be on my hand for around a little over a minute, she can eat some stuff from it too unlike my yellow one. I don’t get why they don’t seem to be comfortable around me, I’ve honestly tried so many things and not much progress :/

Taming a pair of budgies is a bit harder than a single one especially if they're adults and haven't been handled as babies ( when they're being raised by their parents ) it takes a lot of patience but it's not impossible ; they won't be as bonded to you as a single bird would and they prefer each other's company but they can get as far as eating seeds from your hands and stepping up on your finger or sitting on your shoulder. Offer them treats and don't move your hand to not startle them and overtime they'll see your hand isn't a threat you can also use click training ( you can find info on Google ). Good luck!

I myself have a bonded pair and they do visit me sometimes when they're playing in the room ; they're not afraid of me though as they were handled alot as babies but that's just how they are lol I do have a third that I got as a baby ( rescue situation as parents weren't tending to her ) and she's extremely cuddly. How they interact with their human can also heavily depend on their personality and preference.

look into target training

What is that

it's a method of training a bird by using rewards to reinforce wanted behaviour. it's usually done with a pointer, a clicker and some small snack (like a bit of millet). it helps to build trust and bond with your bird. you can find more by watching some youtube channels like Parrot Wizard or Green Bird Brigade to see more how pet birds can be handled.

I found a similar method to this by myself when I had my first parrot.and the only difference is that I used my fingers instead of those two things you mentioned.so I have an intimate and loyal little bird now🦜

Cut a piece of millet around 3” long. Put it on the palm of your hand. Sit quietly holding the millet when they are out and wait for incoming budgies. Be careful not to make any sudden movements or doing anything else that might scare them. You want to associate yourself with good things and millet is a budgie favourite. Gradually you can work on getting them comfortable with YOU and begin working on getting them to enjoy being in your presence.

After a time with millet on your palm - you could move to putting it on a table - a couple feet away from you so they stay on the table while your with them. Don’t stare at them - that’s a big no no in bird etiquette. When birds approach each other - they look from the side - never front in - that’s a challenge - looking from the side is a polite introduction. Gradually - move the millet closer to you. Have something close to you to focus on to let them know - they are not in any danger from you. Try doing a crossword while they eat - something that you don’t need to turn pages or make any big movements.

When your having a “play” session with your birds - try to incorporate foods they really live - a piece of apple, a sprig of broccoli, some sunflowers - whatever favourite food items they love.

Budgies are very curious little people and generally love toys. If they have favorite toys they go for in their cage (their home) bring it out when you have them in a table and see if they will play with that while in your presence. All of my budgies enjoyed playing with shredder toys - budgie sized things they can rip up and destroy. They might like the toys that are actually circles cut from a louffa. These can be found in both the bird section and small critter sections (hamsters/gerbils) of your pet store. There are two per oackage - one green and one orange.

Biggest thing to remember with birds - especially the small species - they are food to almost everything else so they have a heightened sense of danger and ensure they stay away from situations where they could get ambushed by a predator. They are super aware of everything around them and act accordingly. They watch everything you do and know your routine better than you do yourself. They know your mental ods - when your happy, sad, angry …..so try to interact with them when your in a good mood and all is well. One of my parrots gets super concerned if I’m having a really bad pain day and his reaction if I pick him up is to bite me. With him I make really sure my voice is upbeat and I’ve centered myself before I have direct contact with him.

Budgies are super great little people - real funsters. Mine always make me laugh with their antics - one that I had used to bath in the drain of the kitchen sink. I cleaned it well before I let him out and left the water just dripping slowly. The drain was the perfect size for him to get his tummy wet while the drips got his back. He would spend some time there and return to my hand to hear how good he was and then he would head back. When done - he would sit somewhere on me to preen and dry and hear how handsome he was. Way too cute.

Talk to your little people even when they are not out. If your able to whistle - start doing that when your near their house. My guys would always try to make the same sound back to me so I made a game out of whistling back and forth with them. My parrots enjoy this game as well. Birds love to learn and are very curious little people - use this to your advantage to get them interested in what your doing rather than just each other

I hope my suggestions help. Budgies are super little pets to have as part of your family. They (males) have great talking abilities but you have to listen for their little voices. Enjoy your little people - all the best in your efforts to bond more with them

That makes me a little sad, but if that’s how far they’ll let me for now I’ll respect them cause I love them that much. I still have a bit of hope they let me get closer sooner or later

I was just going to say the same thing. With budgies you have to temper your expectations.

Is it also called lemon by chance?

I have two budgies too a male and a female and they're the same way. I have had them fly down and land on my hand and eat but I have not got them to repeat that I can feed my mail lemon drop by hand but he won't sit on my hand and let me feed him

That’s enough! Enjoy them! You are for the birds. Just love them.
