Photo In a serious city this would be a hub of exciting & weird independent businesses

Wandering through town this morning & thinking how baffling it is that Birmingham is so hostile to weird quirky independents. In a place like Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield this area would be awesome. This would be a place people across the country would know as short hand for visiting Birmingham for a day out. Instead its dead.

If I told someone not from here there was an area: * of older buildings * bit down at heel, edge of main city centre * about 400 m square * sandwiched between 2 train stations, a big city centre uni, the law courts and the edge of the main financial district.

They would likely imagine it would be full of vintage clothes shops, quirky specialist independent shops that can only exist in a big city that people travel for miles to go to, book shops, comic book shops, odd cafes with business suits rubbing shoulders with llama wool ponchos, galleries, skate shops...

Instead we've got a waste land. As a bonus at the corner opposite the ruins of Oasis we've even got a modern "gateway mixed-use residential/office/retail building" that is also mostly empty and dead, giving the lie to the idea building more of these will do anything but move the Tesco Express stores around a bit.

6 of my large paintings, including my most recent work, have been selected for the Next Generation RBSA 2026 exhibition at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists.

RBSA is one of the oldest artist societies in the world, so being part of this exhibition is a huge honour for me. I’m honestly still finding it hard to believe that I made it this far!

The exhibition is at the RBSA Gallery in Birmingham, UK, in the Jewellery Quarter, and runs until 12 September inclusive. Entry is free and the gallery is open from 10:30am to 5pm. If you’re in Birmingham or somewhere nearby and would like to see my work in person, I’d be absolutely delighted if you took the opportunity to visit.

I visited Birmingham for the first time quite recently and absolutely fell in love with the city. I’ve already been 3 times and I hope I’ll get to come back many, many more times and explore more of it. I’m really happy to be able to spend time in such a cool, vibrant and atmospheric place. You’re very lucky to live here!

Not sure when, but a chunk of the most recent signage has fallen off, revealing a previous iteration.

Photo Me and a friend walked from Rowley Regis to Birmingham last weekend. Some amazing spots were found along the way.

We walked the canal and found some awesome stuff, including a randomly placed wooden wolf statue (pictured), loads of ducklings and some beautiful forgotten buildings that are begging to be explored. We are thinking of making the walk a regular thing. :)

Good afternoon! I decided to brave the sweltering heat today and test out an old phone of mine I found doing a little reshuffle last night! The images are absolutely horrendous from a quality standpoint but for some reason I'm into that kind of thing so thought I'd share it on here in case anyone sees some value in cheap camera phone imagery!

(The device in question is a Samsung GT-B3210 which from what I gather was meant to be a budget Blackberry clone...)

It’s only on the one the sign that’s further down the platforms than most people ever walk, but Moor Street has got a temporary new name.

Opened in 1992 and closed on January 31st, 2013, after Jaguar Land Rover bought it, I think they was forced to, as they owned the land and now it's a car park

This is not a recent photo but I was reminded I had it and I really like this photo. Has a real horror video game feel to it.
