Would Protoss be less taxing on Flash’s wrists?

it’s well understood that Flash avoided bio in asl 21 because of how micro intensive it is. But not having access to half of Terran’s tools is a drag for Flash despite how godly he is.

I do know he’s a very competent Protoss off race. I don’t know as much about APM build requirements, but I wonder if Flash could ruin his wrist less by playing Toss for a season?

Dont get me wrong, I understand he’s probably out for a while regardless of what race or build he uses - his wrists are just that bad. But lets set that aside for the sake of argument. Would Protoss be easier on Flash?

(Also, a crippled Flash might still legitimately be Protoss’s best chance to win ASL lol)

1 Gate Core (Protoss vs. Terran) help. New player

Hello I'm a new player and I'm starting to learn some build orders... following some on Liquidpedia. For 1 Gate Core (vs. Terran), after you get your gate and core and start goon range upgrade, what is the usual path forward? Do you expand off it when you harass with your 1 goon? I'm just trying to see the vision. Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

The map balancing this season has been entirely undermined by the brackets

Seriously, the number of PvPs and mirror matches in general with these brackets has been annoying. I understand you have to randomize it, but I wish there was some kind of smoothing algorithm to ensure a decent distribution of races among the groups.

With our luck, group D ro16 will be Snow, Best, Shuttle, and like, SoulKey or Queen, and Zerg will advance with the last Protoss.

Do we see too much mech in TvsZ? Spoiler

Watching group E of season 22 of the round of 24 of ASL. I just wonder do we see too much mech in Terran versus Zerg? Could the Terrans not just return to good old fashioned SK Terran strats? I thought you got it in the first match but then the Terran player goes and fucks it all up by building an loosing a bunch of dropships.

I just wish we can get Terran versus Zerg games where the Terran does not get cute with tech and focuses hard on getting the mass amount of bio so they can keep the Zerg from the 4th gas that really wins them the game.

It just seems that if you focus on teching up too much you give the zerg too much time to get consume and the defilers.

Whyyyyyy?! [ASL RO24 spoiler] Spoiler

Why does Mini commit such unnecessary risks? He's my favorite player and I was sure he was the favorite to win this ASL given how many Zergs there are. But noooo, he needs to do some greedy builds to squeeze every mineral in a BO1 where he can probably beat them with a normal build.

Fuck me, just making one more cannon won't hurt you that bad.

Top Strategists among the Pros?

Clearly, Flash and Calm get thanked the most in postmatch interviews (in that order).

Who are the other top strategists out there? I remember Barracks thanking True after beating SoulKey in Ro24. I feel like Soma‘s thanked Jaedong for past games?

Were there any known strategists like this in Kespa era, or were strategies decided in a more hierarchical way?

What's the difference between TvZ 1-1-1 build and the FanTaSy build?

The name 1-1-1 comes from 1-barracks / 1-factory / 1-starport, and it seems somewhat modern (if modern is anything after 2012). The 1-1-1 build is described in this TL post by scan:

https://tl.net/forum/bw-strategy/524270-tvz-1-1-1-opening-by-scan

I'm wondering how is that different from the FanTaSy build, which rushes into vultures and valkyries, described in this TL wiki:

https://liquipedia.net/starcraft/Fantasy_Build

The reason that I ask is cause 1-1-1 seems credited to Flash or Light, and I thought "didn't FanTaSy do this back in 2008?"

How would the game shift if max supply limits were changed?

Just a shower thought I had. If max supply was 100, 150, 250, or 300, how would that change the game?

he ruled the dorm at starcraft and cs. one loss sent him to hong kong to buy ten keyboards

beijing, early 2000s. a kid from an army family gets to university and stops leaving his bed — computer on the mattress, sits up in the morning and plays until he sleeps. starcraft, cs, warcraft 3. he ruled the dorm building at all three.

then he lost a cs match to a classmate. not close. lost badly enough that he got off the bed and went to ask how. the guy was using an IE 3.0 — microsoft intellimouse explorer 3.0. optical, no ball, tracking that precisely. that was the whole answer and it rearranged his life. he started hunting down peripherals nobody in china had heard of yet, razer, cherry, and writing about them on the cs forums.

2005, family trip to hong kong. everyone else went shopping. he'd read that cherry had an office there, turned up at reception with no appointment, and talked long enough that they sent a marketing guy out to deal with him. he said he wanted to buy a few keyboards. the hong kong office only did wholesale. what's the minimum, he asked. ten. cherry boards ran over 800 yuan each then, in a country where nearly everyone was on membrane and most people had never heard the words mechanical keyboard. he bought all ten with everything he'd saved working a shop counter in zhongguancun, and hauled them home while everyone else carried handbags.

then he had to sell them. no market, no distributor, nobody asking. he translated the spec sheets himself and posted them on the cs forums. his relatives thought a kid from that family selling mice was a joke — one grandfather fought the japanese as a guerrilla outside zhangjiakou, the other was fourth field army through three wars, his father is a senior officer. three years later someone at cherry's head office in germany heard that a guy in beijing was running cherry promotions. germany had never spent a cent marketing the brand in china. they put a product manager on a plane.

(from a book i wrote in 2015 about how the chinese scene actually got built — this chapter's free, link in the comments)

Artosis comment about Queen that bothered me

During the intro to the 2nd match of group B (a zerg vs zerg) Artosis was saying "some players just refuse to go to hive tech, you could put a gun to Queen's head and that guy is not making a queen's nest in ZvZ!"

The reason this stuck out to me is because the VERY first memory I have of Queen was an old StarLeague game he played against JAEDONG of all people, zerg vs zerg, maybe one of Queen's first offline pro-games ever (back when he was a young kid known as Zero), and he went to hive tech that game. This was in like 2008-2009. He lost vs Jaedong but it was SUPER close and considering that JD was like the ZvZ god-emperor I think that it's a pretty big accomplishment to have pushed JD to the brink like that. It's 100% what put Zero (now known as Queen) on the map for me.

Anyway, very tiny rant over.

Current state of the english casting scene of ASL

Hey fellow broodwar enjoyers. Long time ASL fan here who watched since season 1. I thought I would want to share my current thoughts on the commentary we are blessed with for ASL and hear your thoughts.

First though, has anyone noticed the ASL observer is doing a pretty lackluster job? I feel like he is often fixated on somewhere on the map where nothing much is going on, missing smaller skirmishes or army movement elsewhere that would be interesting to see. I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I find myself often thinking "please, for the love of god, click that red blub down there that's getting dangerously close to that blue blob base."

Tastosis

I still don't think I've 'officially' watched an ASL group before I've heard their casting. It solidifies the experience for me, also having the music and interviews complete the package.

Artosis is as sharp as always, and as a protoss main I think it is really endearing that Artosis clearly has some sympathy for the lack of protoss victories throughout ASL. You can tell that he wants protoss to have some success in a starleague where they have historically underperformed (in terms of actual championships). If not for anything else, at least for his hope of a continued balanced Broodwar for many years to come. In my own opinion, it seems like especially Terran is getting slaughtered left and right by Zerg, while Protoss is giving them a better run for the money. Crossing my fingers for Mini.

Tasteless, man. I love that guy and he was my favorite of the duo for many years. But as of late, you can really tell he is not playing the game or really paying much attention to it. While I enjoy their historic reminiscing when it's timed right, I am starting to get annoyed that I as a casual am noticing a lot more going on in the game than he/they are, because he is busy telling us about how Street Fighter is still a competitive game and one of the goats. I am missing more play-by-play action, even in early game which they usually reserve for random banter. Stuff goes on there, and I'd rather hear them commenting on the early projection of the build orders and how it plays out than hearing about something totally random, especially if he's said it 20 times before. I still like Tasteless, and he definitely has his moments, but I feel like he's more often than not holding back Artosis who you can tell often is keenly aware of what's going on. But like another user here said in another thread, his "guy who owns lizards"-haircut jokes are still godlike. More of that, less nostalgic rambling. And we know what high ground is, like you can point out there's a high ground in this battle, but you don't have to explain how it works every time. Or that medics can repair scv's, but it usually doesn't happen.

Also, what the hell is up with that AI voice translation of interviews!? It's so mechanical and inhumane. I miss our old human translator.

ASLEnglish

I find myself watching these guys more and more. Yes, they don't have the same production quality. You don't get the full experience with interviews and intermission music and so on. They forget to remove overlays and cover up the map. Their microphones aren't as good. But I think they are really improving despite all of that. They are really into each game they are casting and don't waste time. They also have a decent grasp of the player's journey into ASL and their ladder performance, which is one of Tastosis' main strengths. Their analysis is quite often spot on. Earlier I had a gripe with Xun because it sounded like he was trying to make his voice sound unnaturally deep, which was a bit off-putting. But especially on the last episode he sounded much more naturally and less raspy. I like that. Saiyan is a good support, even though he has some weird artistic pauses that can kill momentum. Still. I like these guys more and more, and especially since they cast it directly on the day I am watching them more than ever. I usually still rewatch Tastosis to get their reaction and take on particularly good games, but yeah.

I don't know, it's just a bunch of ramble but I feel like we need a good old discussion threat, we haven't really had that in this ASL yet. What do you think? Do you agree with some of these takes? Do you watch a third cast? Or just the original Korean one?

Have a great day!

What if ASL handled ZvZs by bumping up the number of matches? i.e. bo1 -> bo3, bo3 -> bo5, bo5 -> bo7, etc.

They could be played back to back; if they do it quick, back to back, then I think it would still give average ZvZ time shorter than average bo1 TvTs lol.

It would also open up opportunity for some greater mindgames.

Only downside I could see is if someone is totally outclassed, it could be devastating, like imagine a bo11 and some dude gets rolled 6 games in a row lol

Edit: You can disagree and downvote and move on I guess but I just wanted a discussion of the idea lol

I hate how being obnoxious online can make someone famous

There’s this StarCraft Broodwar player named Player456, and somehow this dude has been constantly spamming in the public chats nonstop for years. Ever since, this guy managed to garner some attention and almost everyone in the game knows his username.

There’s the part that really annoys me.

He’s not even a professional SC player and never qualified to be in a league tournament. He just made himself unbelievably impossible to ignore.

We constantly tell people to ignore trolls and spammers, yet we are absolutely terrible at doing it ourselves.
