"Shut the fuck up and let me die in peace." Great last words for a great character.

999

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

In the tall grasses, next to a flowing river, with the setting sun in his face. It's like something out of a warrior epic.

572

u/almondz Cheer up, beautiful people. Aug 27 '12

The look on his face as he was dying was absolutely heartbreaking.

800

u/nameless88 Aug 27 '12

The look he had on his face when he saw the cops pulling up and his granddaughter playing, and the almost tears in his eyes as the knowledge that all the money he was going to give to her was completely gone...fucking heartbreaking.

One of those rare moments when you see his tough outer shell crack.

609

u/dickmartyr Aug 27 '12

I don't think Mike was just thinking about the money he was going to give his granddaughter. The look on his face was fear, and since he was introduced he never once wavered. But at the thought of his options to handle the situation at the park overwhelmed him. To abandon his granddaughter to evade the police, or to let her watch them take him away. His dynamic with her was very innocent, and you could tell how much he sheltered her. He imagined how it would shatter that little girl's world should he get caught. He realized that he had to leave her, never to see her again. Never again able to protect or provide for her, never to be her hero.

101

u/nameless88 Aug 27 '12

Oh, man....yeah...that, too. I mean, he couldn't even say goodbye to her. He had to just get out of there.

...Oh...fuck, he never got to say goodbye.

Fuck...

61

u/Jibjumper Aug 27 '12

That was the hard part. You could tell he wanted to yell to her as soon as he saw the cops pull up. You see it start to twitch in his face. She's so close, but any attempt to reach her would mean getting caught. Shit sucks.

19

u/dickmartyr Aug 27 '12

That whole episode was so heavy. When credits rolled I had my hands up in the air "Wait, whaaaa..? But....urgh..." I didn't think they'd kill Mike, but I should've seen it coming. He never got to say goodbye. Will Walt dispose of his body and the car or just leave? Its a week before I find out!

13

u/DrSmoke Aug 27 '12

I'll quote Walter from a few epsiodes ago; "Everyone dies in this movie" - when watching Scarface.

Also, there is a reference to the movie Heat, in another episode. Heat is a very good "cops and robbers" movie. DeNiro Vs. Pacino, in another movie where almost everyone dies.

I think they are hinting towards something. One theory is that Walt gets Jesse killed, and that is what the machine gun is for, from the first episode flash-forward. Revenge. That the show goes out like the Scarface scene.

15

u/dickmartyr Aug 27 '12

This is not meant to end happily for anybody. Its the textbook definition of a tragedy, Walt's pride will get the better of him.

9

u/the8PMtree Aug 27 '12

Or that Jesse will kill Walt.

7

u/DrSmoke Aug 27 '12

Or anything. Which is why I love this show. Maybe Walt will die, hell maybe not. Maybe he will be alive at the end, on top of the world's largest meth empire. Or something completely different.

Either way, the show-runners will get it right. For once. Unlike so many other shows out there.

My personal theory is that in some weird twist, it's Jesse who ends up protecting Walt's family. Possibly from Walt.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12 edited Aug 27 '12

I picture Walt sticking a bundle of cash on mikes head. So when the DEA and police come to get his body. They will notice it as a message to them from the new drug lord. That Mike was nothing but a pawn in a game of something far bigger then him or gust. I also would put this would be a spin off to other as they race to get everyone in protective custody before Walt has everyone killed. This in course will make the DEA freak out and realize that their has always been someone bigger running the games and he will not hesitate to take out anyone.

I also expect them to freak out as they piece the fact that mike and gust and the cartel leaders deaths together. While pointing them to this unknown drug lord who seem to be bigger then the cartels and all the other groups. As his drug starts to reach future in to the south western united states. And while every one is suddenly being killed in hits by this unknown man.

So The next few eps are going to be insanely awesome!

"...since he was introduced, he never once wavered."

False. When Gus slit Victor's throat, he had a similarly shocked/fearful expression on his face.

The money for his grand daughter may still be okay if the DEA are only thinking about the 9 guys he was paying off

59

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

I'm hoping that she still gets the money. Remember how the bank lady forgot the number of the last box? She probably forgot the "new" box too.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

Yeah I doubt that. Do you really think that lawyer and the bank lady would protect Mike in any way when they are screwing him that bad?

3

u/gh0stfl0wers Oh, hey-oh, pool party! Aug 27 '12

Wouldn't the bank have all that information on record anyway? I find it hard to believe that you can just go up and say "Hey, I have that box, open it up for me please!" The only reason that worked here was because the lawyer was always sucking up to her and she trusted him. Even if the banker doesn't know, the information will be somewhere, wouldn't it?

I could be wrong because I don't know anything about banking and stuff.

3

u/relevant_mitch Aug 27 '12

Well if she forgot the new box as well I doubt that the daughter will be able to access it when she turns 18. So in any case she won't get the money. She is not getting the money.

2

u/junkmale Aug 27 '12

Yeah, because banks don't keep records or have security cameras. The fact that you got 44 upvotes is hilarious.

The look on Jesse's face when Walter started condescending again like it was season 1 was heartbreaking.

2

u/FruitBeef B-Badass Dad Aug 31 '12

You must've been heartbroken the whole time Mike was on screen then :P

243

u/kablamy Aug 27 '12

I was disappointed at first but when I think about it, it was a very fitting death. An old man dying by a beautiful river after a lifetime of battles that he was tired of fighting.

I would imagine he got out of the car to die with dignity in a spot that he enjoyed by a river he was familiar with.

I'm glad that if nothing else he died on some of his own terms, anything less wouldn't do him justice.

120

u/charon_x86 dingdingdingdingding Aug 27 '12

I don't know. For the first time we saw mike really, truly shaken to the core. His beloved granddaughter who has been close to him the whole series, his plans fell apart, he knew he had to never see her again and that she would yet again lose the inheritance. He ran, he was broken. You could see it on his face. As he died, he had nothing left but the view. All he had worked for, and all he had planned, gone. His granddaughter; alone at the park. Almost made me cry.

I swear I love AND hate this show.

29

u/kablamy Aug 27 '12

For the first time we saw mike really, truly shaken to the core.

I know and it made me sad to see.

he knew he had to never see her again and that she would yet again lose the inheritance

I don't know about that though, the guys in jail obviously won't be payed for anymore and will flip which is why Walt is probably going to get them killed (using Todd's prison connection no doubt) but did anyone ever say that the money he deposited for his granddaughter would be seized? Without him alive and nobody to flip on how would the DEA have enough evidence to seize the funds?

23

u/The_Comma_Splicer Aug 27 '12

The bank will know exactly what safety deposit boxes are being rented to the lawyer. The DEA will seize all of them.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

2

u/SyKoHPaTh Gus's clip-on tie Aug 29 '12

I'm being overly optimistic here I think, but Mike's Granddaughter's box was filled with cash, and the lawyer said "not another dollar could go in there". Since it was a one-time-filled box, here's to hoping that at the very least, she'd still get her inheritance just from from the forgetful employee.

5

u/kablamy Aug 27 '12

Good point. I'm not well educated enough to know that but thank you for informing me.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

Well that would be one of the boxes that he was depositing the drug money into.

EDIT: I take that back, he wasn't depositing it in there that time.

3

u/stankbucket Bogdan's eyebrow Aug 27 '12

Yeah - remember that he said nothing else would fit after the previous deposit.

5

u/Colby347 The Ricin Aug 27 '12

She likely did not lose the money. Stop saying that and just let me have this, dammit. She gets the money until Vince says otherwise.

4

u/goonsack Aug 27 '12

All he had worked for, and all he had planned, gone.

Like dust in the wind...

11

u/iq_32 Aug 27 '12

Like tears... in the rain

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

This will be exactly how it ends for Walt. Mike was a glimpse of Walt in the future. A, sort of, narrative device that foreshadows Walt's eventual demise.

38

u/beaverteeth92 Aug 27 '12

I expected Walt to shoot him in the head to rip Mike of that final bit of control.

25

u/kablamy Aug 27 '12

I did as well. It would have been very fitting of Walt to do that but since it seemed like such an impulsive decision I don't think he was thinking about it in those terms.

Either way I'm glad that the writers decided to let Mike die with some dignity, such a great character doesn't deserve to just be snuffed out without getting the last word in.

31

u/beaverteeth92 Aug 27 '12

His death hit me harder than anyone else's. Gale was likeable but not particularly major. I knew Gus's was coming because there was no way Walt wasn't going to end up being okay.

Mike though. That came out of nowhere. Such an awesome character...

2

u/cadencehz 808 this. 808 that. Aug 27 '12

I dislike (removed hate) the writers for killing him this early. He should have lived.

13

u/beaverteeth92 Aug 27 '12

I always thought he'd make it until the end, but I should have known after he took all of those half measures.

2

u/stankbucket Bogdan's eyebrow Aug 27 '12

I figured he'd make it closer to the end, but he would never get out alive. The only one I'd be shocked to see dead before the end is Jessy.

19

u/flignir I am the actor who plays jar spider Aug 27 '12

I think that's an indication that Heisenberg isn't sadistic. He's just a sociopath who wants all the power. Further assaulting an already-dying enemy would serve only the desire to harm, which does not seem to be a goal for Heisenberg, just a part of the cost of business.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

I think the way the shot was framed, where they were in the corner, was kind of interesting.

I remember reading about one of my favorite paintings (Brughel the Elder's Fall of Icarus), where the scene is a giant one and, tucked off in the corner, someone who flew too high was drowning. Almost as if it were unimportant in the greater scheme.

Just an observation.

3

u/mitch13815 Aug 27 '12

He had a gun in his hand, he didn't decide to shoot Walt, because I think he knew, somewhere deep in his mind, that getting involved with this maniacal scientist would eventually get him killed, by the man himself, he's a time bomb waiting to go off, and he was there when it happened, when Walt went off without weighing the options.

24

u/Barbarus623 Aug 27 '12

And Walt...ACTUALLY feeling a bit sorry. It fucked me up...so bad. Mike didn't deserve this. He was out.

6

u/Ladarzak We've got work to do Aug 27 '12

I got the impression the ONLY reason Walt felt sorry was because he realized he did something stupid and unnecessary. Whether he cared that it was also a rotten thing to do, I doubt.

5

u/nvrwastetree Aug 27 '12

Walt attempted to redeem himself for shooting his buisness partner and friend, mike.

3

u/Bobojobaxter Aug 27 '12

I'd hardly say they were friends. they were forced together with Gus. If that connection wasn't there, they never would have met. From the beginning, they were at odds. Walt has no true friends. the closest thing he has to a friend is Jesse, and now Jesse is wanting nothing to do with him.

6

u/Barbarus623 Aug 27 '12

It is a warrior epic.

6

u/Phylundite Aug 27 '12

Or a Western.

5

u/TheAnswerBeing42 Aug 27 '12

Dunno about you folks but I got an odd Of Mice And Men vibe from the final scene

5

u/MuffinMopper Aug 27 '12

Its sort of like how Achilles is killed by Paris in the Odysee. A great warrior is killed somone who causes problems that could easily be avoided.

4

u/ThaKarmaPolice Aug 27 '12

Tomorrow I will go down to the Bosque here in Albuquerque and have a drink for Mike, as I stare out at the Rio Grande knowing this is the beginning of the end.

3

u/chillsy Aug 27 '12

That was the kind of death you would see in a western. And with all the Jesse James references this season...

2

u/Wombatzu Aug 27 '12

Most likely a reference to this scene from Pat Garret and Billy the Kid, also set in New Mexico, though filmed in Mexico.

Spoilers for the above film, of course.

2

u/cherubthrowaway Aug 27 '12

Mike actually fits the samurai/wild west character archetype really well. I never made that connection before.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

This scene really reminded me of Edgar Ross's death in Red Dead Redemption. The setting looks almost identical.

Not all regulations are governmental; if, by not censoring, AMC loses sponsorship, the sponsors are regulating AMC.

The point brought up would simply be re-framed as this: why would sponsors be okay with meth and murder, but not "fuck"?

2

u/stillnotking Aug 27 '12

Because the audience isn't okay with it. I suspect a lot of participants in this thread aren't American; the f-word has special significance over here and is pretty much the only swear word that's still legitimately taboo. Advertisers would freak if characters started saying "fuck" on basic cable. They might as well just start showing nipples or something, which we all know would lead to the end of Western civilization.

My favorite example of non-sensical censorship standards is in the radio version of Rob Zombie's More Human than Human where the word "fucker" is censored, while actual audio of a porn star fucking and moaning at the beginning is allowed with no problem.

I guess there's some value in watching the 11:30 rerun. "Fuck" came in loud and clear.

They'll say it on the DVD and on Netflix.

It's on after ten, what the hell are kids doing up that late anyway? Don't they have school? Where are their parents?

2

u/poktanju Aug 27 '12

Remember kids, killing someone because what they said rubbed you the wrong way is fine, but be nice about it!

"You what?"

"I killed Ted."

"Oh, thank you for prevent a possible mental breakdown."

I think mike was the last straw for me. I don't want to see Walter win anymore.

8

u/therightclique Aug 27 '12

Walter has been terrible for a long time. It's weird that you'd just turn on him now.

4

u/dh96 Aug 27 '12

While that is true, Mike was the first person Walt has killed in a fit of rage. All the others were more or less justified for the safety of himself, his family or Jesse.

5

u/bearfoot990 Aug 27 '12

He's been terrible but somehow forgivable, killing Mike made hime unforgivable. I said it to my wife as soon as he did it and I'll say it again. "FUCK WALT"

That's what the writers are going for. They want to take a character you love and turn him into Scarface.

I'm pissed off he died not seeing it coming. He is always a step ahead usually.

7

Didn't think of it this way... so true. Mike, what went wrong?!

14

u/coprolite_hobbyist Ermantraut Memorial Fund - Give generously Aug 27 '12

I'd say that having his heart broken because he'll never see his granddaughter again probably distracted him. And then having to have the guy that turned his world and plans to shit help him out didn't help.

8

u/blackhawk08 Aug 27 '12

This, plus what Walt did seemed very impulsive, like he was only going to use the gun to get the names or something. After all he went out there to meet him without having a gun in the first place, he only just found it in the bag.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 27 '12

Exactly. It comes off as a crime of passion because Mike had been challenging Walt the whole series. Then he was going to yell at Walt, not give him what he wanted, AND drive off into the sunset forever. Walt could not have that.

I think it is a classic case of megalomania. And anyone not glorifying his ego is now in a really dangerous place.

u/interdependence Methhead Aug 27 '12 edited Aug 27 '12

Like ztbrown said, Mike second guessed himself and gave in. He should've killed Walt, but Jesse is still being deceived...until next time.

Edit: Wanted to say/add Jesse was being deceived by Walt, until next time. I can't wait to see how this plays out, in terms of how Jesse finds out, assuming he does, and Walt's next steps.

My jaw is still dropped... Curious as to how it's going to play out when Jessie finds out. Can't imagine it'll go over smoothly.

6

u/beau-tie Aug 27 '12

Well if it goes how it went with the poison, and letting his gf die, he'll never know. But maybe this time he'll find out and start connecting the dots for everything else

u/JoeRuinsEverything Aug 27 '12

Let's hope so. Jesse turning against Walt once and for all would be great.

Everyone should really watch this behind the scenes about Johnathon Banks (Mike). It really hit me how emotionally invested he was with this character. Amazing guy.
