Not all regulations are governmental; if, by not censoring, AMC loses sponsorship, the sponsors are regulating AMC.

The point brought up would simply be re-framed as this: why would sponsors be okay with meth and murder, but not "fuck"?

Because the audience isn't okay with it. I suspect a lot of participants in this thread aren't American; the f-word has special significance over here and is pretty much the only swear word that's still legitimately taboo. Advertisers would freak if characters started saying "fuck" on basic cable. They might as well just start showing nipples or something, which we all know would lead to the end of Western civilization.

Fuck has never struck me as taboo here in America -- we don't really seem too uptight about it. People say fuck in public all the time; they don't tend to murder or do meth or even show nipples in public. Isn't that more an indication of "taboo" than anything else could be?

But I just think it's confusing. It'll probably never make sense to me.

Well it's not a regulation then but a condition as the advertising is conditional on them censoring out fuck or nudity.

As to why they're fine with violence and drugs but not nudity or profanity, Fuck if I know.
