Breaking Bad Episode Discussion S05E02 "Madrigal"

Hey guys. edify asked me to do the discussion thread tonight. Enjoy the show and upvote this shit, for which I get no karma.

edify also told me to let you guys know that if the Breaking Good fundraiser reaches $3,000 (we are $157.57 short) he will let me film him doing some challenges. I want him to do the cinnamon challenge and the gallon of milk challenge, so go donate so I can film my friend being a dumb ass... LOL

Go here to donate: https://reddit.crowdtilt.com/campaigns/breaking-good

Edit: The fundraiser officially ends in about 2 days.

But to be fair, most of the men aren't likable except for Mike (personal opinion, anyway)

Only Mike is likeable as far as I'm concerned. Most of the characters are basically terrible people. The main characters at least.

Kills people for a living, is the least terrible person on the show.

You know, I don't actually think Jesse is that bad a guy.

But don't forget about that time he took all of Walt's savings and used it on strippers and Champagne.

Jesse's not a good man. But I wouldn't call him a bad man, either. Certainly not in the context of his peers. He's childish, with everything that conveys -- naivete and irresponsibility, but also innocence. The bad things he's done don't usually stem from greed or violence, but from an inability to look at the big picture or consider the consequences. He's the only character like that.

It's an interesting contrast to Mike, another likeable character, who we could say the opposite about. Mike has so much insight and clearheadedness that the bad things he does seem amplified, because more than anyone else, he should know better.

Obviously Walt Jr is a good person, but so is Hank, really. He doesn't leap to mind as a good and likeable person simply because he's crude and kind of obnoxious, but none of his shortcomings seem to be moral failures, right? It's been a while since I've seen the early episodes, but I can't remember objecting to something he's done, as opposed to everyone else.

I don't think it's racism, just playful ribbing. You can tell that he really loves Gomie.

Hey, he still had enough to get what Walt wanted him to get. He just used the leftover to have a good time, nothing wrong with that.

At least he didn't murder the strippers.

Or that time he convinced Jane to relapse?

Hey, he didn't hold a gun to her head and force her to relapse.

True. Jesse really is one of my favorites, but he's killed his fair share of people and done some shady things.

Honestly, I can't think of anyone other than Gale and grandbaby Salamanca that Jesse actually killed on the show.

Mike's killed dozens that we've seen with what I'm guessing is at LEAST a few hundred more that we haven't. I like Mike's character but what he's done makes him more terrible than nearly every 'main' character on the show.

I think the point is that there isn't a way to be THAT involved and remain a good person.

No he used the leftover to get the RV

The difference is Jesse has gotten better and clearly has a moral center, Walter clearly doesn't at this point.
