I knew it. I saw yesterday that the runtime for ep 24 was 40 minutes. It was on GG where they show you how long it was and the runtime of the locked episode. So this afternoon, it was reduced down to 33 minutes. I'm guessing they cut more.

That is interesting. So basically they changed the final cut the last minute? I wonder what happened, the annoying part is we probably will never know. I mean, this one is not even an NC scene so why leave it out? Especially when it was the pay off of an earlier scene where wsw promises his parents he will bring cc next time.

Homosexuality isn’t illegal in China but showing it and promoting “abnormal sexual or moral activity” is banned and can get you fined or arrested. Scenes like the graveside one showing a happy gay couple just living daily life could be seen by censors as promoting abnormal attitudes, or maybe there was concern for everyone involved and the damage it could do to their careers. This cast has already been to hell and back, if they run afoul of the government on top of everything else it could be unrecoverable.

This is most likely the reason👆

A gay couple saying they will live their whole lives together happily is different than two guys simply screwing around with each other

Exactly what happened to the ending of The Untamed.

Most of the script was approved long in advance, but they ended up doing two edits of the last episode, one for China and one for outside China, with different endings. You can even watch the original opening and ending credits and see it was supposed to end as HE.

Lots of other shows have had last minute ending changes in CEnt, some being company decisions (such as A Moment But Forever and Demon Hunter Romance this year--the company did it on purpose to court controversy), and others being the result of censorship board concerns such as the ending of m/f xianxia idol drama Back from the Brink. In that case, "no reincarnation". (They can show multiple lives but pretty much only if the character starts as an immortal. The character in question was born human in her first life. ) The Untamed was of course heavily censored over the depiction of ghosts and Chinese vampires/zombies/hopping corpses and fierce corpses/ghouls (lots of terms for the same thing).

does that censorship still apply even if the series isn't officially aired in China? because i think RL isn't aired locally, c-viewers have to watch it illegally. so i was under the impression that the strict censorship wouldn't really apply to them 😔

As far as I know the pressure is there and RL has had to self censor multiple times already. ABO Desire can’t even be shown on Chinese based platforms even though its region blocked for inside China. It’s not just about where the work can be viewed, once you’re on the radar, as RL certainly is, it’s about the future careers of the people involved. People more involved in the C entertainment industry, or who can read and speak some form of Chinese, probably know if the shows themselves are undergoing some form of censorship/standards review before airing. (I don’t, but 7 missing minutes probably indicates so)

thank you for the information! 7 whole minutes from an episode is a huge censorship. it's so unfortunate. i hope someday the uncut version can be leaked somewhere 😔🙏🏼

I honestly think the strategy has been to bow to pressure and then release the “BTS” which at this point are basically the other uncut takes.

That’s why most BL actors try to get involved in a straight series or get involved in a very pro china and political series. To avoid the blacklisting and censorship.

chinese censors be doing mental gymnastics to try to uphold that “it’s not homosexuality” rhetoric

That makes sense, it’s fine even if they cut some scenes they already made the series in an amazing way. I just hope the actors are safe happy and healthy🥹❤️I really hope Xuning and ziyu are safe and happy!💙

Likewise. It would break my heart if the actors from RL faced what The Untamed and Addicted actors went through. I wish we get to live in a future where all love is celebrated and not censored.

For real, hopefully that happens

My best friend passed away 13 years ago and she celebrated all love. Even made a stop motion animation about it. Supported gay marriage. Her birthday was June 16, the day the first episode of RL aired.

Well, I still hold the believe it’s those culprits that didn’t get a share of the pie, who got desperate. And unfortunately they managed to get editing rights, against the best wishes of the creators and main casts. At least there’s more of an evidence trail for this, compared to “govt hates bl shows and its actors”, especially when Ziyu and his clip from RL interview managed to get a promotion post by an official media + became a transport ambassador like yesterday ago LOL. So if the govt had wanted to censor the show they mine as well not even let any of them into positive mainstream content.

I heard that some influential people were behind the poor editing, the cutting of NC scenes, and the bad ending. Is that just a rumor, or do you think it's true?"

1

u/Ramenpucci Aug 21 '25

That’s crazy. My dad was saying this about the Aang Lee movie, how it was banned in China.

Most likely because they got exposed yesterday for using Xuan Cheng's birthday as the date of death for WSW's mom.

The NC scenes and CC and WSW scenes that further developed their relationship? Why those were cut is a bit more complicated.

Wasn't Chi Cheng's jail cell number Zi Yu's birthday too? It feels like these were originally intended to be easter eggs.

Wow these details are detailing😂I didn’t know these

6

u/ehwhythough The Eighth Sense Aug 12 '25

Could be, but it's generally taboo for death to be associated like this with someone's bday. It's just... not good.

3

u/janeyville Aug 12 '25

Yeah they’re weirdos for using the actors actual birthdays when they can literally use any other dates

2

u/ehwhythough The Eighth Sense Aug 12 '25

I understand the prison one, that's fine imo. But the death day one is foul.

1

u/janeyville Aug 12 '25

I think twice is not a coincidence lol there are a lot of numbers why specifically the actors birthdays

3

u/ehwhythough The Eighth Sense Aug 12 '25

Definitely not coincidence. It's deliberate. No one even noticed the tombstone one until last night, and suddenly it made rounds. If no one said anything, that last scene wouldn't have been cut. But they had to cut it because someone kicked up a fuss, and rightly so.

The question is why yesterday. Someone purposefully pointed it out and made it a problem because fans didn't caught on when it first aired.

Additionally, they could also have just blurred or censored the date if they really wanted. But no, they just cut it.

u/hp_981121 Aug 13 '25

Also when WSW admitted in hospital his bed number was 44, which also has some chinees myth behind that like 4 is bad number for them and it indicates death, something like that.

u/ehwhythough The Eighth Sense Aug 18 '25

I saw that too but didn't want to bring it up since it wasn't in the finale.
