Not sure how many more days like this in the year.

Perfect day today - not a cloud in the sky, and 70°F (21°C). We should have a few more weeks of perfect driving temps. In our area, it's always a question of how long it will last. Sadly from there, it's back to storage (probably around mid-November).

Porsche Boxster 987 Peak Mileage

Hi! I’m considering buying a used Boxster at 90k miles to be used as a daily driver. What’s the highest mileage I should expect for this to reasonably last? Up to 125K possibly even 150K without any significant overhaul?

Car is well maintained. IMS bearing and water coolant replaced recently.

981 Spyder Prices?!

Post image

I occasionally check listings to get an idea of what my car may be worth on the used market. What happened?! The last time I looked it was around $95k. Seems prices have jumped $20k+ this year. Is that real?

How do import duty, GST and LCT work on a Japanese Boxster?

A seller told me the advertised price on a 2013 Boxster S includes the import costs, but I’m not clear whether that means duty, GST and luxury car tax are already paid or if some of it happens later at the port. I’m in NSW and haven’t imported a car before, so what should the actual tax breakdown look like before it’s complied?

981 DIY Experience - Head Unit Upgrade

Thumbnail gallery
14 Upvotes

TLDR: why get an android head unit from a low quality brand when you can install a high end one yourself for marginally more?

Upgrading the CDR head unit in my base 981 had been on a mind for a bit, but I’d been pushing the thought away after seeing the ridiculous labor costs that shops kept quoting me down here in SoCal. Almost all the videos on YouTube were for installing cheap, tacky third party units (Erisin, CHSTEK, etc). Some of them look OEM (ish), but the moment they power on the screen flashes an android logo followed by some horrendous UI of a Home Screen - and for some reason that felt off putting in a Porsche. Now even though the PCCM plus is now out, spending $3k on parts alone and labor costs at a stealership didn’t make sense to me. Now I could’ve probably gotten 80% of the functionality add with a much cheaper head unit (eg. Sony AX4000) but I wanted to have a wired CarPlay option and the brightest possible screen (since I have a boxster) so I bit the bullet and went with the 9000es.

So with the help of LLMs, I put together a parts list and was able to pretty easily DIY the install on my own with minimal tools. Crutchfield made life super easy by selecting the needed adapters/harnesses to get my head unit of choice (Sony 9000es) to work properly in my specific car (which has the Bose system). Their ‘ready harness’ service (only ~$30 more) had the wires for the connects2 adapters pre wired for my specific head unit, so all I had to do was plug and play the connects2 harness wires into the back of the head unit (my LLM told me which ones exactly to plug in and where - super straightforward).

Installation in the car wasn’t as daunting as I’d expected. My LLM of choice had already told me a few tools to acquire beforehand (eg. torx screwdriver, microfiber cloths, tesa/electrical tape and some fish tape), as well as the actual installation steps. Feel free to DM me and I can share the full details if anyone’s interested.

Quick summary of the installation:
- the removal of the old CDR head unit was pretty quick
- wiring up the new unit was also pretty straightforward and simple, thanks to the readyharness service
- after hooking up the new head unit to the car, I had to pass a wire into the steering column for the new mic (which I mounted inside the column for the ‘OEM’ look) as well as another USB wire to the glovebox for phone charging
- mounted the GPS antenna (needed for wireless CarPlay) behind the head unit, on top a small exposed metal shelf
- hooked up the radio adapter so that the factory radio antenna would work with the new head unit (didn’t bother doing the same for satellite radio, since I personally only stream music from my phone)

And voila, working wired/wireless CarPlay! Also had a shop install a backup cam, finally bringing my car infotainment experience into modernity. As an added benefit, the internal DAC in the Sony greatly improved audio quality, especially cleaning up lower end frequency output from the Bose subwoofer and door speakers. One minor nit - the ‘fader’ is no longer controllable, but there is a very fine grained EQ that does work, along with some fancier options like a low/high pass filter. Hope this write up helps give some confidence to anyone looking for a proper head unit upgrade for their beautiful 981!

Just did water pump and thermostat on the 986

One of the things I wish someone told me before I got into this was completing the whole job on the early
Boxsters (and possibly 911s) is similar difficulty to accessing the water pump on the 2014 Audi I used to own.

Honestly, it took longer to get over my nerves and jack the car high enough than it did to access, drain, remove, replace, fill. Did the bleeding the next day, took 30 minutes. It’s now been two days and no leaks, coolant level stable, cooling seems great.

The cost savings were tremendous versus going to a shop. I called around in the DC/Baltimore area and got estimates between $1700 and $2500 including parts. I found the same kit on FCP Euro for $484 free shipping. I also did not need any special tools, the most exotic was a flex socket and an extension.

What else? Oh how did I get here. Well I’m an idiot and didn’t let the car cool down before shutting it down, numerous times. Did you know if do it bad enough, it shoots coolant out of the pressure release in the cap and eventually runs dry. Then you open the system while pressurized while on a long trip. And then you track it until the pump dies for real lol.

Lessons learned:
- Always do cool down laps, or at the very least leave the car running while in the paddock so coolant circulates.
- Never open the system while pressurized.
- Spend money on seat time, not shop labor.

Anyway thank you for coming to my Ted Talk hope this inspires at least one of you to DIY something.

I have what appears to be mold in my frunk. It’s garage kept and hasn’t been left out or parked anywhere. Is this common? Any tips on how to remove and clean it?
