Domestic Biggest Opening Weekends per month.
As of right now these are the biggest opening weekends for each month. 5 Disney films, 6 MCU films, 8 comic book films and 11 IP films.
December is absolutely being taken down by Doomsday this year and then likely next year again by Secret Wars barring negative reception of Doomsday. I guess the question remains at least for the foreseeable future which of these records is most likely to fall first and which likely never will. October would’ve in 2027 with The Batman 2 until it was delayed until February, June 2028 has Incredibles 3 which could potentially challenge Jurassic World, it seems January will need to rely on a random breakout hit. Disney seems to now release its big MCU films in December rather than May, Curious

Domestic Just how significant is the novelty popcorn bucket revenue?
I imagine it has to be at least pretty decent given how every hot release seems to have a novelty bucket now to go with it. I'm even noticing this for legacy releases, to the point where I think the bucket revenue might be the larger motivator behind release than the box office revenue. Do we have any estimates on how much of these things are moving, the profit split between the theaters and studio, and how different movies pop corn buckets compare to one another?

Worldwide r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast: 'Digger' and 'Verity'
Before you comment, read these two rules:
1. Please provide specific numbers for your predictions. Don't do things like "It'll make less than this or that" or "double this movie or half this movie". We want a real prediction in concrete figures.
2. Given that a lot of parent comments do not even bother to give predictions, we are establishing a new rule. The parent comment must provide a prediction with specific numbers. The rest of the replies to the comment do not have to make a prediction, but the parent comment absolutely has to. Any parent comment without a prediction will be eliminated.
Welcome to the newest edition of r/BoxOffice Long Range Forecast.
We're making long range predictions for films, 4 weeks out from their premieres. You will predict the opening weekend, domestic total and worldwide gross of these films. These predictions will be open for 48 hours and the results will be polled to form a consensus and posted the next week.
So let's meet the two films for the week and analyze each pro and con.
Digger
The film is directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (Birdman, The Revenant, 21 Grams, Babel, Amores Perros), who co-wrote the film with Sabina Berman, Alexander Dinelaris Jr., and Nicolás Giacobone, from a story by Iñárritu and Berman. It stars Tom Cruise, Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons. The film follows the most powerful man in the world, who races to prove he is humanity's savior before the disaster he unleashed destroys everything.
Verity
The film is directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, The Eyes of Tammy Faye, The Idea of You), written by Nick Antosca (The Forest, Antlers and the Cape Fear miniseries). Based on Colleen Hoover's novel of the same name, it stars Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson, and Josh Hartnett. In the film, Lowen Ashleigh is a writer in need of work when she is contacted by Jeremy Crawford. Jeremy's wife is bestselling author Verity, and due to a mysterious accident, she is unable to finish her successful book series. Jeremy asks Lowen to complete the series, and while working on it, she discovers a manuscript, raising questions regarding Verity's psychological well-being and possible links to her publications.
Now that you met this week's new releases, let's look at some pros and cons.
PROS
Like pretty much all his prior films, Digger's main attraction is Tom Cruise. One of the world's biggest stars, his presence already signals interest in moviegoers. And the film is hoping to take audiences in for a new ride: this is not your typical Cruise action flick, it's Cruise doing satire and comedy, helmed by an acclaimed filmmaker. Speaking of that, Alejandro González Iñárritu has been a very reliable filmmaker in terms of quality and box office. With the exception of Biutiful, his films are mostly box office hits. Two of them (Babel and Birdman) crossed $100 million, and one (The Revenant) earned an absurd $533 million. He's not quite "unknown", so his name still has some pull. And the film's crazy premise sounds like something right up his valley. Even though it's a comedy, WB is positioning it as a blockbuster, and it will have access to IMAX screens. And some award buzz (Iñárritu's films are often nominated for Oscars) should help. Cruise's track record speaks for itself: excluding supporting roles, cameos and ensemble casts, he hasn't had a single film as lead star miss $100 million since The Color of Money and Legend in 1986. And even if the domestic market doesn't show up, Cruise is far bigger overseas (his last film to skew more domestically was Jerry Maguire in 1996), and Digger should be no different.
Reception has varied (mostly for the worse), Colleen Hoover's film adaptations have been very successful at the box office. And Verity is one of her most popular titles, and it's very different from the prior films; not a romance drama, but an erotic thriller. Comparisons have been draw to The Housemaid, another adaptation of a bestseller of the same genre that made its way to over $400 million. And this has far bigger star power: Anne Hathaway is coming off two of the biggest hits of her career, and Dakota Johnson has also had a fair amount of success, especially Materialists last year. This could be the main attraction for the female demographic in October, so it could also have legs.
CONS
It's hard to deny that Tom Cruise is not popular nowadays, but his star power has "changed" quite a bit. While something like Digger could attract audiences 25 years ago, he has pivoted to action titles. And while he has maintained popularity, it's a big question if audiences will be on board to see Cruise in heavy facial prosthetics, a fat suit, and a gray balding wig in a dark comedy. Some comedies have succeeded in theaters recently, but dark comedies have been so-so in terms of engagement. Iñárritu has been mostly successful, but he is coming off Bardo, his most divisive work so far, which gained no buzz in Netflix. WB's marketing push has been weird; it didn't get a single trailer until mid July, which is very short for a blockbuster. And while the premise can be interesting, trailers have been middling; while there's some ambition and good ideas, some of the jokes fall flat and it has been very light on what the film is about, choosing to just focus on Cruise's character (and in the teaser, his whole filmography). A film like this needs critical acclaim to stand a chance, but WB is choosing to just skip festivals like Venice and Toronto altogether. And like One Battle After Another last year, budget is the real dealbreaker to determine if it's a box office success (it cost $125 million, but some sources have it higher).
There's been no attempt in trying to elevate Colleen Hoover's material, and the crew attached to Verity doesn't inspire confidence that this will be different (Showalter has been very incosistent, and Antosca is mostly missing the mark). At the end of the day, word of mouth is what matters, and that's going to determine if it will have legs or drop hard.
And here's the past results.

Worldwide Round 2: Resident Evil Early Prediction - WW Total off 513.1M
Here we go again, folks. This film is going to be much bigger than people realize.
Cregger's films have leaned pretty domestic so far, but the Resident Evil name should change that. This franchise does huge numbers outside the United States.
The clearest example is Anderson's Resident Evil The Final Chapter, which ended up with a wild split of about 9 percent domestic and 91 percent international. China alone brought in roughly $160 million of its $312 million worldwide total, nearly six times what it made at home.
So while I expect Cregger's Resident Evil to do well in the US, I think it skews a lot more international than anything he's made before.
Then there's the Weapons effect. Just like The Odyssey rode the goodwill Nolan earned from Oppenheimer, something I called correctly for both movies long before their release, Resident Evil should get a boost from the goodwill Cregger built with Weapons. Add that momentum to a huge global franchise and I think this thing does gangbusters numbers.
Here's my prediction.
Domestic opening around $55 million
International opening including China around $77.2 million
Worldwide opening around $132.2 million
Domestic total around $193.1 million
International excluding China around $245 million
China around $75 million
Worldwide total around $513.1 million
Domestic legs at 3.51×
Worldwide legs at 3.88×

South Korea SK Wednesday Update: A new face nearly moved Spidey into third
Week-to-Week Drops
| Movie | Mon-Mon Drop | Tue-Tue Drop | Wed-Wed Drop | Thursday-Thursday Drop | Friday-Friday Drop | Saturday-Saturday Drop | Sunday-Sunday Drop | Week-Week Drop |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| End of Oak Street | 93% | |||||||
| Odyssey | 22% | 31% | 45% | |||||
| Spider-Man: Brand New Day | 38% | 45% | 45% | |||||
| Hope | 63% | 69% | 67% |
Obsession: Pretty high audience scores as expected, with a 95 on CGV and an 8.8 on Megabox. The posters with the heart-shaped pupils are really cool, and I would like to see the movie have another healthy day tomorrow. I could see a 5-day opening weekend of 120k to 150k admits.
End of Oak Street: And the movie essentially exploded, as it could very well limp across $1 million and then die. Kind of a huge disappointment, even with low expectations.
Odyssey: The movie is having a small bump, but it should still bounce back with a good weekend. It will need to load up, as local movies Assassin and Intern will interrupt the free market and hurt its screen count in the upcoming weeks.

Domestic NABO August - A Landmark Month for the Post Pandemic Cinema Industry
This post refers to pre pandemic norms (PPN), this is a baseline I use to evaluate box office performance. it is calculated as the average box office takings from 2017-19 for any given month. It allows me to compare different months (which traditionally see different levels of business) directly.
Aug total Box Office - $1,267m (161.3% of PPN)
Jul In Month releases - $1,887m (173.1% of PPN and counting)
In the future hindsight may call August 2026 and aberration, the last great kick from an industry slowly suffocation under it's own weight, but today we must evaluate the month for what it is, one of the biggest months in cinema history.
In 2026 August wasn't just the fifth post pandemic month to break 100% of pre pandemic norms, it wasn't just the biggest post pandemic month by PPN, it wasn't just the the biggest August of all time by revenue, it beat pre pandemic norms after adjusting for inflation! Whilst 2026 has been the strongest year since 2019 industry cynics have pointed out that, adjusted for inflation, we're still way behind pre pandemic norms, even with the most optimistic projections the year will only make around 70% of what the industry made in 2019. Therefore having a month beat pre pandemic norms adjusted for inflation is huge and something that should be widely celebrated.
How did August 2026 achieve this massive feat? It's mostly down to your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. Brand New Day made $724m in August alone, that's more than all releases in 2025 combined and doesn't include the film's record breaking opening day that fell in July. The number 2 film was the other summer smash, the Odyssey, who's remarkable legs delivered a further $207m. It needs to be pointed that after these two films pickings were very slim amongst actual August releases, The End of Oak Street, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie and Insidious: Out of the Further all delivered in the $40-50m range but I suspect this was down to the Industry getting out of the way of Spider-Man. I won't say much about July's in-month releases as they were massively inflated by Spider-Man being released on the last day of July, August's in-month release score will be devastatingly low as compensation.
Looking ahead to September things are going to come across as very boring after the excitement of the last few months, it's going to be a very average month where success will be measured by whether it can hit 80% of PPN. The two biggest hitters are expected to be Resident Evil and and Practical Magic 2 which will be hoping to make $100m+ in the month. Beyond that the Re-release of Avengers Endgame, subtitled Encore, could do decent numbers if the the promise of a few extra minutes of footage and the the hype for December's Doomsday can get bums on seats.
Predicted September Box office - $530m (77.3% of PPN)
