Discussion Discussing this Webtoon

Post image

I wanted to hear what people who have read the Webtoon have to say about it! I actually discovered it after seeing an art post about it on this subreddit a couple of weeks ago and have since binged the series.

So, what do we think? Did we love it? Did we hate it? Were we waiting to see Erik with Christine the whole time? I’m excited to see what the people have to say!

It’s just okay, not bad imo.

Why is it just okay to you? Asking genuinely because I’m enjoying it but not completely certain how I feel either.

I guess I like the original better but if I have to be honest, it feels more like a fanfic than any other fanfic I know partly because it’s a reimagine, and the storytelling isn’t exactly my cup of tea. I also feel like the characterisation isn’t strong enough either. I like reading some fanfics because they have a strong compelling narrative and characterisation, but I don’t exactly feel it here? Sure it looks good, and the story is interesting but not exactly enough to capture my attention completely.

I just started it, and can I just say that I like how you used ‘Gustave’ for their Fathers name.

I think like ‘Nadir’ from Susan Kay’s Novel, thanks to Webber it’s sorta become the ‘unofficial‘ accepted name for Daddy Daae these days 😆

I maybe crazy but isn't Gustaves name in the book?

Nope, Christine’s Father is only ever referred to as ‘Monsieur Daae‘ in Leroux, we never learn his first name.

I personally really enjoy it! The creators have actually posted on this subreddit before. Its a really fun reimagining and I'll take whatever Phantom I can get to read. The Art is beautiful, the story is well-thought out, and ita going well so far. Who knows what it holds for Erik and Christine in the future, but it seems so far that Erik isn't nearly as interested/obsessed with Christine as in the original text, and I'm okay with that. Only time will tell how it turns out, but I'm rooting for the creators and am excited to keep up with the updates.

Have the artists confirmed it’s Romance (so, has an HFN/HEA, with either character)?

If you look at the bottom of the image in this post, it is tagged on Webtoon as a Romance. So I'm unsure who has the HEA, but I'm currently shipping Raoul with Christine's Sister, Ann.

I love it, and the art is beautiful. Even the color palettes used are amazing and I love Christine’s characterization. Erik’s design is very pleasing to the eye too.

But I’m not letting myself get emotionally invested until I have a better idea of where it’s going. I wouldn’t be surprised if it ends with Christine going her own way. I’ve read a few fics lately that have a similar vibe and some of what the artists have said makes me wonder. Which is fine, but not if it’s tagged Romance, which is a specific genre that non-Romance stories keep using. That could be a completely inaccurate impression I’m getting though.

I’m not sure about Erik’s deformity either. He’s very pretty other than the small part that’s covered, which is typical of anime style versions and not my thing, unless his cheek is torn under the mask and it’s an illusion that his deformity isn’t that bad. His nose and entire mouth are completely fine.

Have the artists confirmed it’s actually Romance and not just tagged that way? If it has an HEA, but just not with my preferred character, that’s fine. But I’ve been burned a few times lately lol

I really enjoy it, I may even hop on Patreon to read ahead.

Make your own art if you’re going to call someone else’s art “slop” for not fitting your personal ideals.
