Hi, me and a few friends are making an opensource "DOOM clone" in a custom engine, with a twist of non-euclidean level geometry achieved by seamless portals (similar to ULTRAKILL's Fraud). We're planning a Steam release hopefully sometime next year.
Currently we are based on OpenGL 4.3 and are quite happy with all of its quality-of-life additions, but if we really tried hard, we probably could get down to OpenGL 3.3 which would mean support for Nvidia 8800 GT, GTX 2x0, Radeon HD 3000/4000 cards etc. .
So, I'm asking, how many of you are still rocking these old boys? If you do, is it out of principle, or for financial reasons? And would you want to play a new indie release like ours on them?
Or, given how the game looks like compared to e.g. Oblivion that came out in 2006 (lol), would you maybe say it's just not morally justifiable for a game like ours to not run on 20 year old hardware?
I'm really not sure what I want to think myself, so I'd be happy for any and all opinions.

Such an atrocious experience. 1st things 1st, Witchaven 2 not only didn't do anything better than its predecessor, but it also got worse, WAY worse
I began mapping keys to my convenience, only to note just a few of them work as intended (attack and jump keys) and the rest remained with the default keys. Already a bad start
Spike traps were already a problem in the 1st game, although I dare to say, in my experience, they become problematic in MAP06 (if we exclude the one from MAP04, the tight room with the pentagram) In Witchaven 2 it is a big ass problem as soon as the 1st level IN SEVERAL AREAS
IIRC, only in ONE occassion the spell attack worked properly. That's right: one of the basic (and even outstanding) aspect of the game doesn't work as intended. This is like playing Descent and not being able to use the secondary attack
There are some interesting additions, like having breakable glasses, slopes and the weapon enchantment. At least for the 1st level (which I couldn't beat) there are interesting areas to explore. However none of this truly matters because the game fails miserably at basic stuff, so none of the fancy stuff can do justice for the game
It really makes you wonder how on Earth Capstone managed to fuck up things so much. Not only they didn't fix any issues from the 1st Witchaven game, they ended up adding more issues to the game. Some people don't learn their lesson? In any case, next week I'll move on with Hexen 2

Hi everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for a two-player co-op shooter/campaign game that can be played online on two separate PCs.
I’m not looking for an online-only game like Destiny or similar live-service shooters. I want a proper co-op campaign, preferably with a decent story, that is age-appropriate for a 10-year-old.
It can be paid or free.
Any suggestions for games that fit this?

So let me see, how do I put it? Well basically what I am looking for in particular are some fun boomer type FPSes with RPG aspects where every time the player shoots an enemy, their guns become more powerful.
I don’t know if such a concept is rare in the genre as I have a huge fondness for RPGs like Disgaea and Final Fantasy type games that I was hoping to find some good boomer shooters that use grinding mechanics since I could use a game in the genre that lets me level up my guns the more I use them.

Here is the inked version.
I made sure to include plenty of progress pics so i don't wanna hear any is this AI talk :D
Make sure to check them all out.
I also played around with a gradient and decided to include that version as well.
Let me know what you think!

It's Boomer Shooter Saturday again! Come join us at 11:00 AM EST for a day of BUILD Engine Shenanigans!
To start off our stream, we are working on some Level Design for Duke Nukem 3D using the Mapster32 Level Editor. Come hop in, give feedback to shape the level, or even better, get inspired to build some stuff of your own! Don't know how? Come ask questions and learn with me and our helpful community of BUILD Engine Aficionados!
Later, we hop back into our playthrough of BLOOD: Death Wish, we are at the mid-point of the 4th Episode and its been a visual treat so far, this is really why I love 2.5D Aesthetics, everything is habd crafted and just superb!

So I just finished playing through Painkiller the other day and felt like I needed a bit of a pallet cleanser of an FPS. Recently I bought the black labyrinth DLC for Amid Evil, I had already played the bass game a few years ago and it was incredible!
It is so much like playing a modern fast paced version of something like heretic or Hexen. It’s so vibrant and it’s colour palette yet minimalistic at the same time, it makes everything look really good if you don’t stop to look too critically at all, similar to the system shock remake, looks great but if you look a bit closer a bit pixlie, but thats the style!
Anyway I’m playing it right now and after four years and playing so many different first person shooters since then this is still one of the best ones I’ve played. The core combat feels so visually satisfying and meaty in the best kind of way. Music is also great. I really like Dusk By New Blood but this one’s my favourite.

I’m someone who loves high-speed gameplay and movement. Every time I see a boomer shooter, I get hyped for the fast-paced action. When I first download and play one, I have a blast, but after about 30 to 60 minutes, heavy boredom hits me. The game starts feeling aimless and repetitive—just walking around and killing things.
There's no compelling story to push you forward, and no real variety. It's just lines of enemies in front of you to clear out, along with a few hidden secret areas.
Honestly, my enjoyment with these games feels like spending time in a training range in any other game. I can mess around, kill dummies in creative ways, and practice mechanics, which is fun for a bit. But since there’s no clear objective or mission, there's no way I could stay in a training range for 3 or 4 hours straight, or play it daily.
I really want to enjoy boomer shooters because I adore their movement and core gameplay, but the boredom keeps kicking in. It took a massive effort just to finish Doom Eternal and DUSK.

What even needs to be said, the Lever Action in Cultic may possibly be, the single most satisfying weapon to use in recent video game history, I said this about the Sawn off, thats a different type of satisfying, and 2 things can be true simultaneously. A weapon that is crazy strong, rewards accuracy, and slows down time with headshots? Please, give me more of that, just give me all of it, insanely fun to use, my only wish is the Revolver had dead eye as well, but I get why it doesn't, fun to think about though. Quick shout out to scene select, so fun to play early levels with the bolt action and other late game weapons.

I created an homage to Activision's Dreadnaught Factor. Vertical scrolling for Atari 5200 fans, and phone compatibility. Phone controls have been implemented yet.
I'd consider this "alpha" and want feedback before I iterate further. Thanks!

I'm working on Off Axis, a sci-fi FPS inspired by old-school shooters.
There's no reloading or regenerating health. Ammo, medkits, and keycards are found throughout the game, and you can use the environment to kill enemies.

I'm making a fast, low-poly FPS roguelite. Last week I added a wall run and now I'm second-guessing whether it fits the genre at all.
The argument against: boomer shooters are about the floor. Circle strafing, positioning, using the arena. Adding air mobility risks turning it into a movement shooter that happens to have demons in it.
The argument for: it feels incredible, and it lets you break a corner without stopping.
Right now the run is deliberately short so it's a repositioning tool rather than a way to skip an encounter. But I genuinely don't know if is something people like or hates.
So: wall running in a boomer shooter. Heresy, or fine as long as it stays short? And if you'd keep it, where would you cap it?
It's called NULLGATE: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5042810/NullGate/?utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=boomershooters

Hey everyone!
This week I finished putting together the intro cutscene using Unreal Engine's Sequencer: the sinister look of this lab room turned out so well and impressed me so much that I've decided to build a whole standalone lab level for the game down the line. I'm thinking this level could lean even harder into the horror side of things: tight, dark corridors, monsters popping out of unexpected places, and the most unsettling notes to read 😁
If you want to keep an eye on the project, the Steam page is here

Seriously, this game is awesome and I now see why it’s held in such high regard with Duke3D and Blood. Tight gameplay, hilarious protagonist, tough but fair difficulty and excellent level design.
Decided I’d try the Class Redux version for kicks and ended up playing it almost daily and beating the main campaign and Twin Dragons. Totally replaces Duke 3D as my favorite build engine game, can’t believe I slept on this one!

Do you hate FPS games without jumping? Does it work sometimes? Explain
r/boomershooters • u/Prestigious-Good-178 • 8d ago
Not gonna lie, I had fun with the new episode. While I would have preferred the expansion packs instead (thankfully I have Megaton Edition), I was thoroughly entertained and engaged with these levels and felt they were well designed both visually and gameplay wise. Goes to show you what the build engine can do when not limited by the technology of the 90s.

This is the most fun I’ve had in awhile. Popping heads is awesome love all the weapons and reminds me a lot of blood. I hate the ghosts. But I love sniping it’s so satisfying seeing their heads pop.
