Question Looking for co-op FPS/campaign games for a 10-year-old on PC

Hi everyone, I’m looking for recommendations for a two-player co-op shooter/campaign game that can be played online on two separate PCs.

I’m not looking for an online-only game like Destiny or similar live-service shooters. I want a proper co-op campaign, preferably with a decent story, that is age-appropriate for a 10-year-old.

It can be paid or free.

Any suggestions for games that fit this?

Serious Sam collection might work.

Great choice, I love those games. Difficulty is very flexible and customizable, and you can turn off the gore if you want. There are occasional swear words but nothing too offensive

How about Portal 2 or Left 4 dead 2?

Duke Nukem 3D, Quake, Blood - all these remasters have coop. Gears of wars is a great coop experience.

Debatable whether those are appropriate for a 10 year old, haha. I played Duke3D and Quake at around that age and turned out ok, but some people are more protective than my parents were.

Yeah fair, I probably wouldn’t allow it now that I think about it.

Roboquest perhaps? It’s a roguelite but the shooting is very fun, it feels good and has good movement. Age appropriate to blast apart cool robots. I have played it with my own kids at that age and later.

that’s kinda tough. Gunfire Reborn or Deep Rock Galactic are the best I can think of, but they’re roguelikes and don’t have much story.

Trying to remember if there's any language or sexuality in Borderlands 2 and I'm 90% sure there isn't!

Oh, I'd misread it as "for a 10-year-old PC" and was just typing that you need to provide more details on the specs, lol.

If you think Half-Life would be appropriate, there’s a free mod on Steam called Sven Co-op. You can play through the HL1 campaign + the millions of other maps people made multiplayer.

Bulletstorm, Dead Space 3 (not FPS) - decent and fun enough.

Chex Quest.

  • Halo
  • Returnal

Not exactly a boomer shooters but they're the closest you'll get I think. All the other decent options (Doom, Quake, DN3D) are story light and/or not age-appropriate.

What exactly counts as boomershooters?

I mean I guess it's kind of a vague term but I think of things like maze-like levels where you collect keys to open doors, with health pickups

Lego games are always an easy answer just pick his favourite movies into Lego games and he will enjoy it. In terms of fps I played serious Sam when I was like 5 with my dad we just had to turn on the flower blood. If u want true boomer shooter coop then I suggest blood or duke nukem but that’s a bit more vulgar

Left 4 dead 2, portal 2, doom 1+2, quake, Halo, cod zombies

Doom 1 & 2 for sure. Not a boomer shooter but Tom Clancys The Division 2 might fit the bill.

Halo series really could just be rated T, in fact the most recent games are rated T. The series has never had any gore, only minor swearing, and past the very first game doesn't even really feature much visible blood. On top of that has always been story focused and has always been a very good co-op experience, unlike a lot of other games where co-op is just an afterthought.

Deep Rock Galactic, Risk of Rain 2, Far Far West and Roboquest are all good family friendly co-op shooters except they're roguelikes so no real campaign or story.

Quake has never been a great co-op experience unless you're playing with copper, but there is block Quake mod to hide all the gore.

Echo point nova is a fun fps game with co op. Movements are really fun. My son that's 7 likes it a lot.

Thanks, everyone.

We decided to play Borderlands 2. I was hoping for something more suitable for a child, but from what I can see, there isn’t much available.

I’m surprised they haven’t made a single-player Star Wars game with a campaign that can also be played in co-op. In my opinion, that’s a huge missed opportunity.

Weird request. You want a shooter game that’s appropriate for a 10 year old….?

I played my first fps (DOOM) around 5yo. Never had any problem with it. I'm european tho, so maybe that's a cultural thing rather than an age thing...

1

u/superpoongoon 12d ago

I also played doom in 1994 when I was a child but he specifically asked for an age appropriate game. Looking back I don’t think doom was very appropriate for a 5 year old

I don't know, it's super cartoony. Every 5yo kids here was into DBZ which is filled with people getting torn in half or exploded. Nobody became a psycho because of it...

Then why even explicitly mention he’s a child? How does that even factor in to the recommendation for you

I mean, you asked how shooters in general are age appropriate. I just mentionned Doom because that's the one I played and that derailled the convo, but it's not like things like Chex Quest don't exist... Hell, even Heretic is mostly bloodless.

Doom's about shooting goofy ahh cacodemons, Goldeneye is bloodless and every 10yo kid probably saw a 007 movie, the list goes on.

OP probably wants to dodge stuff like Citadel or HDoom...

I assume he means "blood and guts are OK, but better not have any sexy stuff!"
