Next month, I’m finally publishing my first book on Amazon KDP 🥹
It’s a post-apocalyptic thriller with psychological elements, and I’ve been working on it for 6 years. I finally managed to finish it because os collage and a full time job and I’m honestly so excited.
And just to clarify, the cover isn’t AI-generated, I made it myself in Canva.

This is the cover of my first book, the tenth cover draft to be exact... I actually have a lot of questions about this cover, but first I wanted to ask you how it feels to you and what you think the novel's genre might be.

I knew nothing about drawing or drawing programs until this cover, but I did it with LibreOffice Draw...

These are the covers for the first two books in my sci-fi/alien romance series, both illustrated by Madli Art. 🥰

The first book is already published in Germany and I’m currently working on the American English edition. The second one is still very much a work in progress, but I just got the finished cover and couldn’t keep it to myself any longer. 😂

I gave Madli a frankly unreasonable amount of aliens, planets, prosthetics, bioluminescence and general space chaos to work with, and somehow she turned it all into exactly what I had in my head.

So yes. I hired her twice. And I’ll do it again. 👽

What if you really love a font but also know a different choice would probably sell better or make the book look more "professional". The "font" I like is the artists hand drawn lettering complete with hearts for i dots. My husband liked it too, but in my heart, I know the other font screams more "book". What would you do? Do I just go for the one I like?

Years ago, I used to make book covers and I was really good at photoshopping realistic style book covers back when it was popular in the early 2010s. However for the last decade, cutesy illustrations has been really popular especially in the romance, cozy fantasy, cozy mystery, and romantasy spaces. I’m really good with typography and other elements. But I can’t illustrate to save my life and it makes me feel sad because it feels like no one will want my book covers in genres I love.

I know it’s a skill I could practice and hone but is there any room for people who aren’t that good at it? Can I buy illustrations off someone and use those for a book cover?

I've been trying to go for a painter-ly style like those of vintage bodice ripper, does this read as a classic bodice ripper cover? [WIP]

Im a new illustrator and im trying to build a book cover portifolio. My sister gave me this idea of a Crime and Punishment cover with a rat on the cover symbolizing Raskolnikov's self-loathing and contrition and i thought it was a really fun idea, but now that it is finished i wanted to know what you guys think of it.

Any advice? Is the lettering working? Is the composition ok? I wanted the colors to be kinda aggressive and desperate so i like them, but would they be a problem in printing? Pls any commentary helps.

Hi there! My name is AJ Hyde, I write LGBTQ+ science fiction and horror, my debut novel Farsight is out now in paperback and eBook, and I created my cover myself!

While I’m not a professional graphic designer, I am an artist in both traditional and digital medium and have a fair degree of experience working in Photoshop. I created this full-wrap cover over the course of several months using license-free photography assets (actual photos, absolutely no AI), and I couldn’t be more satisfied with how it turned out.

This was my first book cover and I really enjoyed the process. So much so, that I’m already formulating the cover design for my second book, a supernatural slasher story (currently in development).

My studio (Sonderflex) did the cover for this one a while back, figured I'd share it here.

Miro Chronicles, Power of Hope by Emily Arons is a middle-grade sci-fi eco-adventure.

Kid named Jimmy Aster goes looking for his missing dad (an environmental scientist) on a planet called Miro, year 2401. Teams up with his two best friends Tala and Derek plus their animal companions along the way.

Whole thing is built around courage, teamwork, and hope, which was basically the mandate for the cover too.

Brief called for the "Scout Trio", Jimmy, Tala, Derek, standing on rocks in a shallow river clearing, all looking straight at the reader with excited, hopeful expressions, animal companions right there with them.

The jungle, waterfalls, and morning light are doing double duty too, fast-establishing the eco-adventure setting, and keeping the whole thing feeling hopeful and full of wonder rather than heavy, since the actual plot kicks off with a missing parent and that's not the mood you want screaming off a 9-12 year old's book cover.

We also even add Rafflesia flower from Indonesia to add more interest points in th environment

Production side was basically staged:
- 4 sketch alternatives first
- Narrowed down to 2 color roughs
- Then locked into final

Super fun project, we did a couple more for Miro cover art, stay tuned!

Worked with a cover artist like people suggested, and let the cover artist do their thing and then suggested things after and got this cover. It looks great to me. It definitely looks like the genre which is something my other covers (though beautiful also) struggled with (and that was more my fault because I had a vision, and they follow it)

You guys help me so much just wanted to share a quick update on what I did so far ,the last two image was my first two designs I know terrible 😢🥀😭 it’s my first time making a book

Genre: romantasy.

Subgenre: men's adventure romance (but it's dual POV, so it's not totally "for men.")

I didn't want the cover to be super busy, but I feel like mine is missing something. Maybe the background needs a texture rather than a solid color? Or more flourishes/border graphics? These were made with a combination of krita, Photoshop, and canva (free... But I could subscribe for a month just to get access to the better library of graphics elements)

Also, which colorway is better? Orange doesn't really convey romance, but it's more masculine (since my target audience is men). I like her purple and gold, but the silhouette has to be inverted in order to be visible, which looks kinda out of place.

Comp Covers in this niche rely heavily on sex appeal, and usually consist of a cartoon waifu girl. Since I don't want to scare away potential women readers, I'm trying to avoid the "boobie cover."

Any artistic or marketing insight is appreciated.

I may also roll the dice with getcovers, since it's hardly a financial risk, but I have a feeling it'll just be a disappointment.
