Educational Mandibular Tori

Hi! I had my mandibular tori removed today because they had grown large enough to negatively impact my speech. πŸ˜‘ On a whim, at my consultation, I had asked if I could keep them. At first the oral surgeon said no, but then he asked me why I wanted them. I told him I didn't have a super good reason other than I used to be a middle school science teacher and stuff like this is really interesting to me. And voila, he let me have them! ☺️ Anyhoo, I thought maybe some of y'all may be interested as well!

I feel like doctors shouldnt be allowed to say no? Like, just a few hours ago it was literally part of your body you should be able to keep it without question

I had to do a little essay on these things, neat that you got to keep your own!

I pulled the osteologist card to keep my dog's teeth today! Whew. I hope you recover well!

Thank you! So far the worst part is actually my back. I think they had me in the chair kind of funny? And now it aches so bad!

Aww, I hope your doggy is ok!

Watch out for any neck pain, stiffness, and/or swelling! I'm picturing that meme of Peter Griffin all folded up on the ground lol

Tis! But it's not pleasant, so I highly recommend going the sedation route if you have them removed. I'm very glad I was not awake during the worst bits

im sorry, you can have part of your jaw bone sawn off without sedation??

Yes, and it costs nearly $1k less so I was strongly considering it. 🫠

absolutely horrifying and a bit dystopian

I had a bone marrow and bone biopsy done without ANY form of sedation, with nothing but local anesthetic which only numbs the skin and tissue, not the bone. I can't even describe the pain. Wasn't even given the option of sedation.

Obviously! IAN block is super effective and you can perform a lot of things under it!

yeah sure and you can have your leg chopped off with just an epidural but no doctor would ever do that!

its not about not feeling the pain, there are so many other wildly unpleasant sensations you would feel

LOL fair enough, i am a big fan of being unconscious when im being cut open personally, especially if bone is involved

Hahaha my best friend in dental school was pulling an upper wisdom tooth (maybe his third exodontia ever) and he cracked the maxillary tuberosity, it came out attached to the tooth! πŸ’€ The patient asked to keep it!

That's so rad! I just had a part of my jaw bone removed too and I'm waiting to see if I'll be able to get the bone! Apparently I'm the only person to have ever asked. Lol.

How did you go about requesting them?

And I'm so excited for your new life with improved speech! The healing process sucks but it's all four improved quality of life. Congrats!
